Death of giant panda loaned by China to Japanese zoo sparks new diplomatic row

    • Beijing sends in forensic team to examine body

The death of a panda is at the centre of a new diplomatic row between Japan and China after it was claimed the animal died as a result of foul play.
Xing Xing, also known as Kou Kou, was on loan from China to Oji Zoo in Kobe, western Japan, when he died on the operating table during a procedure to extract semen for an attempt at artificial insemination.
Chinese government officials, already embroiled in a tense disagreement with the Japanese after a fishing boat and crew were held in disputed waters, have now sent a forensic team to examine the 14-year-old's body.
They demanded his body be put under lock and key until the experts arrive.

$this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/09/16/article-1312489-0B1E1800000005DC-383_468x458.jpg') Xing Xing, also known as Kou Kou, was on loan from China to Oji Zoo in Kobe, western Japan, when he died on the operating table during a procedure to extract semenfor an attempt at artificial insemination

China's State Forestry Administration leases the animals to zoos around the world for £650,000 a year and is now demanding £320,000 in compensation.
It is believed the panda, which had been at the zoo since 2002, was given too much anaesthetic during the routine procedure.
Xing Xing suffered a heart attack and died to the dismay of keepers, who had recently negotiated a five-year extension to the ten year loan deal.
Previous attempts to mate the adult male with partner Tan Tan ended in failure, after she gave birth to one still-born cub in 2007 and a live one which died days later the following year.
The death has sparked conspiracy theories in China with internet users linking it with Japan's detention of a Chinese fishing crew.
Their arrests centred over Japan's disputed possession of the Senkaku islands 120 miles east of Taiwan.
The crew were held for a number of days while their captain remains in Japanese hands. It was claimed they were fishing illegally.

I personally don't think the death of a panda has anything to do with the fishing incidence as killing the panda benefits Japan absolutely nothing. £650,000 is about 1 million US dollars for leasing a Panda per year, that is so expensive. It's definitely not worth it. Panda is overated. Hopefully Canada is smart enough to not waste a million dollars a year to lease the animal.

From what I heard, the panda is truly a stupid species; it is very picky and does not cooperate with human efforts to keep them alive. It is lazy, and yet extremely costly in terms of money and resources to keep them alive. Perhaps the money and resources would be better spent elsewhere.

aw. aW. AW. WAH!!! That's so sad that a panda died...and they really are just too cute. Who doesn't love those black and white spotted markings. Zebras and cartoon criminals just don't cut it. I don't think it's the conspiracy theory that China makes it out to be. I happen to firmly believe that they are overly paranoid and antagonistic about anything that is somehow remotely related to Japan and death or money. That's my uniformed opinion anyway.

Panda eyes on people though are not cute.

I wonder how they survive in the wild if they are so high maintenance.

I believe this is a botch operation that no one wants to happen.

I can't imagine Japan being petty enough to take out their grievances with China on a panda - it'd be stupid to do so and will have NGOs all out after it (although they are probably used to it with their whaling). I suspect it's just negligence and sheer carelessness. I'd expect everyone involved in the operation to have been panda-lovers anyway.

I think people tend to exaggerate the cultural animosity between China and Japan. Yes, we all know about World War II, but very few people who were actually there are still alive now. Just how much active animosity is there really between younger generations of Chinese and Japanese whose experience of World War II is limited to books, films, and maybe anecdotes from their elders?

IIRC, they do have low survival rate, that's why they're in deep sh*t and need help.

Particularly the Chinese, there's still a significant amount of young people (especially those in specific areas of China who'd suffered more under the Japanese during WWII) who actually dislike Japanese enough to boycott their products, but if you asked me, most of them don't do much apart from *****ing about Japanese, which can be quite annoying because the *****ing usually doesn't come from just the hatred of WWII, but they like to quote WWII to justify their hatred.

it's their attributes that caused them to be so protected.

If they breed like rodents, do you think anyone would really give a damn about them? might even start to exterminate them, and categorized them as pests.

Isn't part of the reason because humans are destroying their habitats or food resources?

Even in Malaysia our elders still tell us horror stories about the war and how cruel and inhuman the Japanese soldiers were.. but they realise that those people are long gone. Even then there were Japanese civilians drafted in to do other kinds of work and they were nice and polite - it was just the soldiers who were the brutal animals. It's all in the past, though.

I find it difficult to have any hatred for a country which gave me Ultraman, Dragonball, Evangelion, Sushi, Katsu Curry Don, California Temaki, Cha Soba, Koei, Noriko Sakai, Henry Sanada, Transformers, Tori Udon, Yaki Tori, Tempura, Sukiyaki, Konyyaku Jelly, etc etc.. Konnichiwa, hai!

Part of, yes. The other part is how picky they are.

actually, pandas usually pay off that million dollars quite quickly. if anyone has ever gone to the National Zoo in Washington DC, he or she will know. The amount of visitors a zoo gets and the amount of souvenirs they sell increase dramatically if you have a panda.

i'm not a weird panda expert, but i watched a documentary on them before.

it's very difficult for them to breed, and when they do, they only have 1 or 2 cubs. and many times, the mommy panda will abandon the cub as well.

so, in captivity, they try to artificially inseminate the pandas, and take the cubs away to be raised to boost the numbers.

they have artificial insemination centers for pandas in many places i believe.
