Jin Yong characters rank listings

You may have seen these before, they are from the book "金庸人物排行榜" / "Jin Yong Characters Rank Listings" by 覃贤茂 (Tan Xianmao).

I got them from this website http://vip.book.sina.com.cn/book/index_39721.html, and translated the names and added which book they are from. The website contains some info about each character and why they got the rank they did. It also gives characters a rating out of 5 stars for Looks (females only), Martial Arts, IQ, EQ, Attack(?), and listing specific categories.

The way these listings work I think is each character can only appear in one listing. So if they qualify for multiple listings, they'll appear in the one that's most representative of their character.


Abbrviations I used for the less common books:

SotYM = Sword of the Yue Maiden / 越女剑
WHitWW = White Horse in the West Wind / 白马啸西风

Before seeing this, I thought Princess Fragrance, WYY and XLN would be the top 3 in JY universe. Looking at the list...
2. Xishi - one of the four classic beauties would expectedly be up there, even if she's just a side character in JY's shortest story.
1. Chen Yuanyuan - I'm not sure how good she is to take number 1 spot, does anyone support her placement? and why?
5. Golden Flower Granny - I'd believe it if it said Daiqisi instead

What did Blue Phoenix do to end up on this listing? I watched the 2001 TV series and she seemed pretty rational throughout. Can anyone that read the book shed some light?

7 out of the 10 are from North Hengshan... there mustn't be many nuns in JY so I'm not sure why they had this category.

Can't believe Wei Xiaobao is not No.1 or No.2 here... In fact he is not in any list at all!! Maybe the author forgot about one of the most memorable characters from JY...

No HR? She is the youngest heroine, at the age of 15 she was said to be more beautiful than all the concubines in the imperial harems of Jin and Song put together.

'shizhen' is not really 'unfaithful', more like 'unchaste' or 'sexually amoral' to me. In any case, RXZ shouldn't be put in this list. She never bedded any man other than DZC.

This list is so wrong! Where's my girl Miejue Shitai?! Why Qu Feiyan is put in here?!

The way the author did this is one character can only appear in one list… So Huang Rong was No.1 in the 可爱 Lovely/Cute list, which is fitting, but it means she’d miss out here. And Meijue, being a nun, was put in the Nuns lists which I have no idea why it existed…

Just want to add that Huang Rong did get 5/5 stars for looks, but the whole stats thing could just be something the website added, and not from the book, I'm not sure.

10. 阮星竹 Ruan Xingzhu (DGSD)
'shizhen' is not really 'unfaithful', more like 'unchaste' or 'sexually amoral' to me. In any case, RXZ shouldn't be put in this list. She never bedded any man other than DZC.

At first I thought of 失贞 as “unchaste”, but looking at the women in the list it wasn’t so much chastity but more of them being unfaithful to their husbands. sexually amoral could also be used.

十大英雄 Top 10 Heroes
3. 令狐冲 Linghu Chong (SPW) No way LHC is more heroic than ZWJ. He shouldn't even be considered a hero.

totally agree. HSDS and SPW settings are sort of similar. ZWJ was pro-active in resolving resentment within jianghu, bringing together the sects and saved many people. On the other hand LHC only helped putting out fires here and there and never acted on the root of the problem, despite having similarly dominant martial arts and advice from Fangzheng and Chongxu.
Though it seems that in general more people like LHC than ZWJ…? Maybe LHC did a better job at sticking to one girl than ZWJ, he was so great at it that he failed to see the brilliance that is RYY. Anyways, Linghu Chong needs lessons in change management.

十大僧道 Top 10 Monks / Taoists
1. 玄慈 Xuanci (DGSD) This old chap violated 1 of the 5 precepts of Buddhism. And it's surprising that Yideng is not in this list.[/

yeah, surprising that Yideng/DZX isn’t on any list, neither is Hong 7 Gong… maybe they are mentioned elsewhere in the book.

I don't really agree on the idea of ranking someone's heroic achievements. But I will say that LHC can be pretty heroic. The selfless kind. He pretty much sacrificed himself to save Yilin. Gave up his life to save the girl who needed blood, and jumped in to save Xiang Wentiang, an old man in chains being outnumbered by alot of people. He didn't protect a nation. But his actions are none the less heroic.

2. 林平之 Lin Pingzhi (SPW) - No way! Actually this dude was quite lucky. He was able to revenge his parents' deaths and marry a cute girl.

I thought LPZ should've taken the #1 spot on this list. His entire family was murdered in one night and then later found out his respected master was the real culprit behind his parents' death. He then had to castrate himself to avenge his parents' death, got blinded in the process, killed his own wife, and then eventually lost his life. I think he's much more unlucky than MRF!

BTW - I totally don't agree with this list. Where's Di Yun from Linked Cities? That dude is extremely unlucky and always got himself caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. He should've been on the list.

4. 李自成 Li Zicheng (SSwRB) - how does anyone consider him to be unlucky? He caused his own demise. He lost the kingdom due to his own stupidity and lust. If he had given Chen Yuanyuan back to Wu Sangui, he might not have lost the throne so easily. No pity for this dude.

I will try and post the chinese website where this list, together with an essay by Tan explaining his placing of each character (an essay per character, so its a lot of reading to do if you want).

Its an interesting read (Chinese only) although I don't agree with half of his rationales (e.g. I don't see how Kang Min can be ranked below Dao and Bao in terms of unfaithfulness!)

I would have ranked Sweeper Monk as the top monk since he seemed to actually have reached enlightenment. The next would be either Wang Chongyang or Zhang Sanfeng, although going by the way the guy ranks things, Wang Chongyang should come before ZSF just based upon the fact that Wang Chongyang chronologically before Zhang Sanfeng as well as the fact WCY helped spread the Inner Alchemy that Zhang Sanfeng practiced.

Inspired, I am going to create my own Top 10 lists, and of course, cause some disagreements. Here is the first one.

Top 10 Long Distance Strikes:

1. Xiao Feng initiating a blast at Ding Chunqiu from 100+ feet away (Most Badass Feat)

2. Li Qiushui knocking down Xuzhu from up to 50 feet away.

3. Sweeper Monk pushing JMZ away from 30-40 feet out with a blow of his sleeve.

4. Xiao Feng striking down Evil #4 Yun Zhonghe as Yun ran with lightning speed and 200+ warriors were unable to catch him.

5. Murong Bo demonstrating the ability to kill Duan Zhengchun and his sidekick from 20+ feet away (let us ignore JY's "misrepresentation" in spatial description)

6. Xiao Feng sending a sharp pain through Murong Bo's arm, from 20-30 feet away.

7. Jiumozhi slowly & simultaneously sending out 6 streams of energies to 6 different people, and freezing all 6 streams in mid air!

8. Yang Guo and Huang Yaoshi toying with 3 Mongolian warriors back and forth like footballs.

9. Zhang Wuji and Xuanming Elders' exchanges producing so much wind that no one dared to go within 20-30 feet.

10. GREAT YIN YANG PALM Yue Hou demonstrating the ability to injure Linghu Chong from 10+ feet away.
