Saw that article. I hate twitter, but a year of 'reform through labor' for THAT is the stupidest f'ing thing ever.

I can't believe they're still doing this sh*t in China. How long has it been since Mao died?

This is way too silly. Sent to labor camp for one year over 5 words in Twitter? She's not even tweeting anti-government messages.

The problem to me is not about impeding free speech. It's the OTT reaction. Her punishment far outweigh her 'crime'.

Didn't PRC themselves encourage anti-Japanese sentiments lately? They allowed anti-Japanese rally to be held earlier on (albeit in a controlled environment). They got their people's sentiment all high and now they are punishing their people for it.

The woman must have gotten the shock of her life. She might even be thinking she's being patriotic. But, suddenly got arrested and sent to one year labor for it.

PRC should be more consistent with their ruling. Not change tune according to whim. Reminds me of the Tang Wei incident.

Hm... I wonder what would happen if I encouraged violence against, say, the President or a forign embassy would turn out. Anyone can claim to be satirical or joking after getting caught.

As for the 1 year labor camp, yea, that's harsh, and not exactly consistent. But then again rule of law and being consistent is not exactly China's strong point.

Now, if someone actually followed that and went smashing Japanese pallavion, I imagine the head line would be something like:

"PRC encourages local angry youth to smash Japanese pallavion as political message."

PRC doesn't need to encourage anything. All they need to do is give free pass to anti-Japanese organizers and it will blow up by itself, especially after things like the boat captain incident or the history book whitewash incident. A lot of times the local authorities/media have to step in to keep the nationalist sentiment in check.

Although I'm not surprised that western media would get this little "fact" wrong.

As kidd noted, this woman probably thought she was being patriotic.

It's still breaking the law. If I grafitied patriotic messages, patriotic though it may be, it's still breaking the law.

Which law, specifically, did she break?

Encouraging people to perform destructive and violent actions is just stupid, so the women made the mistake of being stupid. But to send her to a camp for that is also stupid. Two wrongs in this case. One slightly more wrong.

Which makes this all the more scary. Our compatriots in the PRC best be careful what they post here, or anywhere really.

The line is so blurred. Sometimes the government there seems to allow or even encourage such negative feelings, but other times it does things like this... :\
