Default Greatest military generals and strategists in Jin Yong

Many wuxia characters find themselves caught in wars between states and often can't escape taking part in them, leading armies into battle or contributing strategies and tactics. Considering the fictional characters of JY, who would make the greatest military generals and military strategists?

The characters who are good at directing a relatively large number of people such as XF, Ren Woxing,... or who are very intelligent such as HR, HYS, Wuyazi, Huang Shang... are the ones who have the potential to become a good strategist.

But according to Zhuge Liang in 'The Way of the General': (source: Kongming.net)

    Skills of Generals

    The five skills are:
    1. Skill in knowing the disposition and power of enemies,
    2. Skill in knowing the ways to advance and withdraw,
    3. Skill in knowing how empty or how full countries are,
    4. Skill in knowing nature’s timing and human affairs,
    5. And skill in knowing the features of terrain.
    Arrogance in Generals
Generals should not be arrogant, for if they are arrogant they will become discourteous, and if they are discourteous people will become alienated from them. When people are alienated, they become rebellious.

General should not be stingy, for if they are stingy they will not reward the trustworthy, and if they do not reward the trustworthy, the soldiers will not be dedicated., the armed forces are ineffective, and if the armed forces are ineffective, the nation is empty. When the nation is empty, its opponents are full.

Confucius said, “People may have the finest talents, but if they are arrogant and stingy, their others qualities are not worthy of consideration.”
So basically no JY's fictional character has the potential to become a great strategist b/c according to what the novels show us, most of them preferred to work alone, and the few ones who were good at coordinating such as XF and Ren were either pretty arrogant or lacking in brainpower/knowledge. When even Huang Shang, who was one of the most intelligent guys in the novels, had his arse handed to him by the rebellious Ming cultists in battle, no JY's fictional character should hold a candle to a decent advisor of the 3 Kingdoms era. Ren Woxing should be the best out of the lot though, at least he almost took down all the major orthodox schools.

There is a wuxia character that held a military commission, Fuyuan Great General Wei Xiao Bao, who commanded more than 40,000 soldiers and wage a successful campaign. Even in his early career, Commander-in-Chief Wei Xiao Bao of the Plain Yellow Banner was known to treat his subordinates well, has no qualms to accept useful advices from his subordinates, and have good intelligence networks. Not to mention he was also a very good tactician. He's also noted for his ability to spot talents (although through some twisted means) and use them accordingly to their ability, and didn't let his initial impressions on them played a factor.

Jin Yong's wuxia novels feature a wide range of characters with different strengths and abilities, including martial arts, intelligence, and strategic thinking. Based on their character traits and actions in the novels, here are some characters who could be considered great military generals and strategists:

Guo Jing - While Guo Jing may not have the same level of martial arts skills as some of the other characters in Jin Yong's novels, he is known for his intelligence and ability to analyze situations. He has also shown strong leadership qualities, such as when he led the army to resist the invasion of the Jin Empire in "The Legend of the Condor Heroes". He would make an excellent military strategist.

Huang Rong - As the daughter of a renowned strategist and the wife of Guo Jing, Huang Rong has inherited the skills of her father and is highly intelligent. She is a master of strategy and has demonstrated her ability to lead armies, such as when she commanded the defense of Xiangyang against the Mongol invaders in "The Legend of the Condor Heroes". She is also an expert in psychology and can read people's intentions, making her a formidable military strategist.

Yang Guo - Although Yang Guo's martial arts skills are exceptional, he is also a skilled strategist. He is able to analyze complex situations and come up with creative solutions, such as when he devised a plan to rescue Xiaolongnü from the tomb in "The Return of the Condor Heroes". He is also a master of guerrilla warfare, which would make him a valuable asset on the battlefield.

Xiao Feng - As the leader of the Dali Kingdom, Xiao Feng is a capable military commander. He has a keen strategic mind and is able to analyze his opponents' weaknesses. He is also a skilled diplomat, able to negotiate treaties and alliances with other kingdoms.

Duan Yu - While Duan Yu may not have the same level of strategic thinking as some of the other characters, he is known for his bravery and military skills. He is a skilled swordsman and has led armies into battle, such as when he fought against the invading Khitan army in "The Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils".

Overall, there are many characters in Jin Yong's novels who have the potential to be great military generals and strategists, each with their own unique strengths and abilities.
By the way, today I came across this article www.agmglobalvision.com/the_best_military_hardware_of_the_us_army and it seems that something similar is described here, if we talk about military generals. What do you think? If it is not difficult, see the article.

I wouldn't say no JY's character has the potential become a great military general. Guo Jing was instrumental in helping Genghis Khan win some victories. Also he and his wife held off the Mongolians for a long time.

Another capable leader that is overlooked is Zhang Wuji. He won the hearts and minds of the people of the Ming Cult and united them under one leadership after decades of turmoil. His Cult led the revolt against the Mongols. After the expulsion of the Mongols, he could've easily gone from general to emperor if he was inclined to.
