It seems to me that it is a tragic accident, it could have happened while this woman is at home. Should the hospital and the hospital staff be held liable?

the hospital should not be held liable. the mom accidentally smoothered the child because she fell asleep while breastfeeding; the hospital should not have to monitor her 24/7 to determine when she's awake/asleep to safely breastfeed her child. i feel sorry for her loss but lawsuits are getting out of hand and are beyond ridiculous. she should not place blame on the system for her own negligence.

I think there is negligent on the staff part. The woman felt safe enough to fall asleep because of the midwife's reassurance and there should be someone there to monitor her.

It think hospital should pay for her chronic adjustment disorder and post-traumatic stress therapy or offer their counselling/psychiatry service for free to the woman instead of giving her a lump sum of $600,000.

I'm curious. The report said

Ms Blomfield is claiming $600,000 in damages, costs and interest

No and such lawsuit should not be allowed to begin with. I feel sorry for her loss but where is personal responsibility?? People like her is one of the main reason health insurance in the US is so expensive compare to the rest of the world. I guess it's always someone else at fault.
