    Synopsis:
Orphaned as a child, TongXue lives under the care of her maternal uncle. While she was working at a cafe, she caught the attention and attraction of Mo ShaoQian, CEO of YuanZhong Corporation. Little does she know that her father once betrayed YuanZhong Corporation by selling classified business details to a rival and indirectly caused Mo ShaoQian's father death.

TongXue's father's betrayal plunged YuanZhong Corporation into a serious crisis and ShaoQian was forced to enter a political marriage with Mu YongFei, heiress to Mu Corporation, in order save his father's company. On their wedding night, ShaoQian became repulsed by YongFei's possessive, condescending attitude, and could not stand to live under the same roof with her. ShaoQian continuously sought to divorce Yongfei for the next ten years, but she resolutely refused despite both leading separate lives and being in a nominal marriage.

After ShaoQian discovers TongXue's identity, he seeks to avenge his father's death. ShaoQian uses criminal evidence (embezzlement) against TongXue's uncle to blackmail her to live with him as his mistress. As ShaoQian gets to know TongXue, he begins to harbor very conflicted feelings for her. On the surface, he treats TongXue coldly and toys with her emotions. Secretively, ShaoQian cannot help himself but falls hopelessly in with love her and wants to protect her... But will TongXue be able to let go of her childhood sweetheart and reciprocates his feelings?

    Cast:

Hawick Lau as Mo ShaoQian (~33 years old)
A matured, rigidly disciplined man driven to ruthlessness. Ten years ago, he sacrificed his happiness to marry a woman he didn't love to save his father's company from bankruptcy. ShaoQian sees his political marriage to YongFei as his biggest personal humiliation, and tries his best to keep his distance from his "wife". When he discovers the daughter of the man who betrayed his father, he ruthlessly seeks revenge and tries to make her life a living hell. But when he realizes he has fallen in love with the daughter of the man who's responsible for his father's death, he becomes frighten and tries his best to suppress his feelings. He gets further tormented by the fact that the woman he loves only bears hatred for him.
TongXue often describes him using the Chinese proverb 衣冠禽兽/yi guan qin shou literally meaning "beast in clothes" cuz ShaoQian ALWAYS always dresses spotlessly but she finds his "beast-like" actions to be a stark contrast to how proper he looks. Now both fans/author fondly call him by that name.

"Death is not the best way to make a person suffer, because death is just a form of escape. Making the person trapped in hopelessness is a penalty worse than death."

Ying'er as TongXue (~21 years old)
A innocent and kind girl who inadvertently get embroiled in the revenge plans of Mo ShaoQian. She unwillingly becomes his secret mistress to save her uncle from going to prison.
    Quote:
"Are you happy when you see me suffer?"

Wen ZhengRong as Mu YongFei (30 years old)
Arrogant, rich, and formidable wife of Mo ShaoQian. Ten years ago, she fell deeply in love with Mo ShaoQian and used underhanded means to marry him. She plotted with her father to bring ShaoQian's father's company to bankruptcy, forcing ShaoQian into a marriage alliance with her. Unfortunately, her obsessive behavior drove her husband away on their wedding night. She will use everything in her power to control and make her husband love her, including betraying her own father.

Hi! thanks JoleCole for updating up with the trailer and pics! I skimmed through this novel on the internet and I loved it! But I can see some differences already!
Not very excited about the casting though - Hawick looks OK as the "Beast" but the lead girl does not suit my imagery of TongXue and they look strange together. However, we will just have to wait and see how they perform on screen. My fav character in the book was Mu Yong Fei so I would like to see how she is portrayed on screen. But I do think that most of the violence and sex plot would be cut due to the tight Chinese Broadcasting Censor Board. Shame because it really adds to the depth and mindset of Mo Shao Qian.

Thanks for your reply! I'm a big fan of the original novel. Qian Shan Mu Xue is the only novel I like by Fei Wo Si Cun. The complexities of Mo Shao Qian's character really fascinate me, but I would NOT want to know a guy like him in real life even though he's supposed be damn attractive/wealthy. He's too unpredictable and manipulative, only interesting to read/watch. After learning about his plight, you can't help but feel bad for the poor dude. Like you, I think Mu Yong Fei, despite her ruthlessness, is definitely more interesting than TongXue. I found TongXue's character to be "blah." The poor woman devoted 10 tireless years trying to gain her husband's affection and failed miserably. Everything she does, the results always end up different than what she hopes to accomplish. He never even once gave her a phone call using his personal cell phone! I guess that's what you get for being so evil.

Cast Review: I haven't watched the drama yet, but only basing my comments on what I saw from the trailers. None of the actors/actresses, maybe except ShaoQian's mother and Mo ChangHe, fit the looks of the characters in the novel. Hawick Lau is only OKAY after I see him act, and Wen ZhengRong as Mu Yong Fei is pretty good in her portrayal but utterly fails in her looks. Yong Fei is supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the novel, but I find her too maternal to be the cunningly gorgeous Yong Fei. Most disappointing cast is probably Ying'er as TongXue... Nonetheless, I'm really excited about the adaptation since I think the screenwriter did a decent job in writing the dialogue. I just love to watch the bitter battle of wits between ShaoQian and his wife, definitely not the typical married couple. LOL

    Love this scene!

Yong Fei: Is your heart bleeding yet? Look at the harm you've done.
ShaoQian: It makes you this happy to destroy a woman? You're quite pitiful.

My impression of Mu Yong Fei is that she is the perfect image of a wife. Rich, pretty, sexy and smart. But she is too obsessive and competitive for any man to like her. She coudl have chosen any other man and her marriage would still end in disaster because no man can put up with her urge to dominate. She is like a guy in a woman's body. No man wants a wife that puts them down all the time and treats them like a slave. I feel very sorry for Mu Yong Fei because she could have had the world with all her money and looks, yet she chose to obsess over one guy and lead such a pathetic sham life.

I think most people who read the book will like Mo Shao Qian because they feel sorry for him. But actually, I am interested to see him in the story but I don't like him as a person. He is too crazy in projecting in his hate. The more he changes for revenge, the more he actually becomes like Mu Yong Fei. Definately more interesting than Xiao Shan and Mu Zhen Fei who just hang around as plot devices. I probably do prefer him to end up with Tong Xue though because Xiao Shan already has a girlfriend and no way that Tong Xue can end up with Mu Yong Fei's brother. Tong Xue is too damsel-in-distress for my taste. But seems she would be even weaker and dependant and helpless than in the novel. And is with the baggy clothes in the trailer? I thought she was a fashion designer!

I don't think any of the casted couples actually look good together. Ying'Er's face looks gigantic next to Hawick, and Wen Zheng Rong looks like an older sister. Xiao The guy casted as Xiao Shan just looks dorky. Actually when i was reading, I was picturing Yan Kuan as Mo Shao Qian! Hawick is too baby-faced to be the two-faced scheming businessman with a tortured past.

After re-skimming the novel, I realize how similar YongFei and ShaoQian are in personality. They are both intelligent, manipulative, strong-minded, ruthless, and prideful individuals. I always believe that a good couple should always have complementary traits to make a relationship successful, but both YongFei/ShaoQian are too competitive/unyielding/headstrong to maintain a cordial relationship, so it's inevitable they brutally clash. Because YongFei bears such obsessive love for ShaoQian, I feel he was able to use it against her; thus, he has an emotional edge over her. As for ShaoQian, I feel the only person who can really hurt him deeply is TongXue. It's ironic how in this love/psychological battle, the ultimate "winner" in the end is actually not the two strongest characters in the novel, but the "damsel in distress" TongXue.

I don't know why, but Xiao Shan is my least favorite character. Even though he's a good hearted guy, but he's too indecisive for my liking. He doesn't exhibit the firmness and clean-cut act of ShaoQian and ZhenFei. I guess that's just human nature since not everyone can be as clear minded.

In regards to the actress who plays TongXue, I'm growing to accept her. She's still far from being the ideal TongXue, but they already casted her so there's nothing I can do I think they changed her profession from being a chemistry student to an aspiring architecture/interior designer. So we can't complain about her bad taste in clothes. I think the cameraman did a terrible job shooting her cuz she looks good in certain angles but absolutely terrible in others.

Actually when i was reading, I was picturing Yan Kuan as Mo Shao Qian! Hawick is too baby-faced to be the two-faced scheming businessman with a tortured past.
HAHAHA. I think Yan Kuan looks better in costumed dramas. Somehow I don't find him as attractive in modern clothes. Hawick definitely looks too baby-faced and his build too petite to act as the matured, mysterious ShaoQian. I had imagined someone more manly and rugged...like Daniel Wu and Takeshi Kaneshiro.

I think Yong Fei's most stupid move was to let Shao Qian know that she was crazy about him. He is her one and only weakness. Shao Qian is more secretive with his feelings and only at times can others actually feel that he actually loves Tong Xue instead of using her a revenge tool or carthartic outlet. I think Shao Qian hiding of his true feelings for people and the actual battle between the "couple" were the highlights of the novel. Everything else was so-so. Shao Qian actually has another weakness apart from Tong Xue which was his mother. He cared more for her than he acted even though they thought differently about his way of life.

I think that is real life. Most intelligent people complicate love and happiness with too many ideas and principles and think that they can control life around them and when they don't, they go beserk. The most simplest people live the most happy lives because they don't take so much into consideration.

I an confused. Is it pronounced Zhen Fei or Chen Fei? about Mandarin pronounciations. Anyway, this dude could have been good for Tong Xue if he was not from the Mu family.

I dislike Xiao Shan because I don't like how he was well into a relationship with his high-school beauty then decided he was rekindling feelings for Tong Xue. Sometimes in a relationship, it can be too late to turn back and you just have to take up your responsibility to your partner but Xiao Shan is just vague about what he wants.

So we can't complain about her bad taste in clothes. I think the cameraman did a terrible job shooting her cuz she looks good in certain angles but absolutely terrible in others.
I think Ying'er looks best from a 50 degree angle shot where one side of her face is shadowed. She doesn't have a nice side complexion and a straight on shot makes her face look fat. Her long silky hair is really nice though!

Daniel Wu definately suits but not too sure about Takeshi. I always find Takeshi so peaceful looking. Why I suggested Yan Kuan is because his cheeks are hollow so he looks like a guy who is being tortured. I think I can take down Hawick in a fight!

A MV created by the novel's author herself. I couldn't stand the song she used, so I put it on mute and just read the subtitles, which were more interesting. LOL. A lot of the scenes are repeat of the previous two trailers, but there are some new stuff.

    New scenes:
    - ShaoQian overhears TongXue calling Xiao Shan's name in her sleep while she's lying in bed next him
-YongFei and Su ShanShan confront each other. Shan Shan calls YongFei "an evil snake woman" and ridicules her about ShaoQian's extra-marital affair.
-ShaoQian first meets TongXue at a cafe
-ShaoQian asks TongXue if there's another man in her heart
-Flashbacks of TongXue and Xiao Shan during their carefree school days
-While ShaoQian and YongFei dines together, he asks for a divorce and wishes her luck finding abetter man.
-YongFei receives a phonecall from Lin XianZhi, telling her that TongXue is pregnant.
-TongXue tearing up over the phone telling her bestfriend she wants her unborn child to see his/her father one last time.

Based on the author's blog, she actually went to visit the film set in Hangzhou a few months ago and was quite impressed by Hawick Lau's acting. Now, I'm getting excited! Even though Hawick totally doesn't fit my image of ShaoQian, but good acting is always a PLUS. She praised the dialogue and the fight scenes between ShaoQian/TongXue.

Ooops, my bad! My pinyin isn't too great since I'm more fluent in Cantonese. You're right, it's ZhenFei, not ChenFei.

Yep, the cameraman should have been more meticulous and shoot at an angle that made her look less busty...

Totally agree with you on Xiao Shan! It annoys me that TongXue longs for him so much. I didn't even feel like TongXue loves him that much, but she only latches on to beautiful memories they had to together.

    Neither. She has a miscarriage.

P.S. One thing I can't hep but give a big SIGH is the costumes in this drama!! Chinese modern dramas really need to improve in their style of clothes! TongXue's outfits definitely do not suit her role as a mistress of a wealthy businessman!! ShaoQian is supposed to shower her with expensive and designer clothes!! Same goes for YongFei!

Yong Fei looks OK. Her clothes aren't that bad. But Tong Xue's clothes are just corny. maybe I guess she wear simple baggy clothes to uni so no one will suspect her real identity as a rich man's mistress. She probably wears it when she is out with Mo Shao Qian. There was a few shots of Tong Xue in a dress during the trailer and she looked ok.

As for your earlier comment of Tong Xue not really loving Xiao Shan, I feel that what they shared was real and genuine, but it was just puppy love. But Tong Xue really went through certain hardships with Mo Shao Qian by her side and their relationship is tested and more lasting. Xiao Shan reminds Tong Xue of her past happier times in contrast with her oppressive lifestyle where there is little hope for her to hold onto. They can be together but all they will just be reminiscing of what they used to do in high school and not experiencing together in the present and the future. It is more like to longing to correct a past regret then finding out that you can never turn back time.

That's true. I shouldn't complain too much. Some outfits are pretty decent in this drama. I mean they could do worse! In this world, there isn't the "worst," but only "more worse."

To TongXue, Xiao Shan is the unattainable fairy tale while ShaoQian is the brutal reality. Being in such a wretched situation, I guess happy memories are her only solace. It makes me wonder what if Xiao Shan and TongXue never had that minor argument that broke them up back in high school, would their love for each other be strong enough to sustain their relationship or would the hard reality of everyday life still break them up anyway? Both were very prideful individuals who didn't want to bend their ego and apologize upfront at first. I bet ShaoQian is probably even more prideful than both TongXue and Xiao Shan. Despite the dramatic ups/downs in TongXue/ShaoQian's relationship, I feel like ShaoQian has more of capacity/strong character to drive the relationship to the right path. It's just a matter of whether he's willing to do so.

The author once said that out of all the male characters she created, ShaoQian is the best husband material. I found the author's comment quite shocking at first. ShaoQian isn't exactly your typical "Prince Charming." He's more like the devil in disguise...well at least on the surface Anyway, despite being married to the gorgeous YongFei and having the material wealth/assets to be a womanizer, ShaoQian never had any sexual relations with any other woman except for TongXue. The author gave him extra bonus points for his clean slate (which I attributed to his picky/mysophobic nature) He's certainly very good at maintaining his distance with other women. Xiao Shan, in contrast, has the universal good nature to make it hard for him to hurt anyone and reject Lin XianZi too directly. Thus, he had a difficult time choosing to follow his heart or his duty.

Furthermore, I wonder if his parents, who are pretty affluent and well-stationed positions (I think they work in foreign service or something?), would accept a nobody like TongXue or the more wealthy XianZi? Knowing Xiao Shan's character, I don't have much confidence in him to fend for TongXue if his parents object to their union. We know for sure TongXue gets along very well with ShaoQian's mother and his father is dead to give his opinion. No in-laws problem there!

Sorry for the long rant! Couldn't help myself!

The kissing in Chinese series is so funny and unnatural!

Well, the most noticeable thing for me cast-wise is how pretty Yinger's hair is. So shiny and long and smooth. I love her hair!

Yep, I found most kiss scenes in Asian TV dramas tend to be very unnatural and awkward. If I have to rank kiss scenes in TV dramas by region, this would be my list (good-->bad): Hong Kong>Mainland>Taiwan>Korea>Japan>Thailand. I would have ranked kiss scenes in mainland productions to be worst than Korean/Japanese if it wasn't for Too Late to Say I Love You, Tian Mi Mi, and a few other mainland dramas I've seen, which have quite passionate kisses. Korean and Japanese kiss scenes tend to be very innocent and beautifully filmed, but lacks passion.

Yinger's hair is one of her most redeeming qualities. If she lets her hair down and cover half of her face, then she looks more dainty and less bulky. I'm pretty okay with her acting as TongXue since her age fits the role and she has nice long hair.

ShaoQian and TongXue's best friend, Liu Yueying - I wonder what happens here? In the novel, I don't think Yueying ever meets ShaoQian.

The korean song used in the first trailer is called "As Long As I Love You." I think it's originally from ta Korean movie. Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000S3EQLI/
