Default BGM TVB "borrowed" during the 90s and early 2000s

I know TVB borrowed instrumental music from Himekami, S.E.N.S, Kitaro and other places. I might be just the few that fell in love with these music and became a vivid reminder for me whenever I listen to this and remember the series I've watched that had it playing in the background. I've collected and bought some of the CDs that have these songs on them.

Below are some music by Himekami, some people might recognize:

    http://youtu.be/gonEfP-YJtE (One Snowflake)

    http://youtu.be/XzVPeB-UpXs (Evening Poem)

    http://youtu.be/DOy6TMDOEaA (Distant Suns)

    http://youtu.be/UAzRwTyo4fI (Prayer)

    http://youtu.be/T6hjKV8MGmM (White Mountain)

    http://youtu.be/l2ATTW0VBBo (Earthflame)

If anyone watches DGSD1997 by TVB, you'll recognize the next pieces by Kitaro:

These two tracks come from the Soong Sisters movie soundtrack. There's actually some more tracks on the soundtrack CD itself.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ozz_ywoVIHY (The Soong Sisters theme song)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=II4Q-Zo2r68 (Echoing Wall from the same Soong Sisters movie)

    Following are pieces by S.E.N.S

http://youtu.be/snqwcA9FCWU (Palace Memories) - Heard in ATV's Coincentally, TVB's Journey to the West I or II, Dark Tales II?

Aphrodite - Heard played in Legend of the Condor Heroes 94'
    http://youtu.be/-KDZbkU3nRU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irZgo...eature=related (Definitely heard in Legend of Condor Heroes 94')

http://youtu.be/mThcnC1BeT4 (Heard in various scenes of LOCH94' )

    http://youtu.be/7h_mq4t_bMA

Heard played in TVB 1995 Justice Pao I and II
    Kitaro - "Heaven and Earth" - http://youtu.be/YO82u7CKj1k

Heard in Justice Pao I and II, State of Divinity 1996, LOCH94' and several other series and movies

Kitaro - Journey Beyond Horizon (Heard in LOCH94')

Kitaro - Silk Road Fantasy (Again another one heard in LOCH94' scenes where Yang Hong found out his real parentage and both his biological parents died, or Guo Jing's mom wandering far to Mongolia with baby Guo Jing or the part where Guo Jing is apart from Huang Rong)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vqGuM_nNPI

Kitaro - TienShan (Also heard in LOCH94') Don't mind the distracting video, just listen.

Well, that's what I can find on youtube so far. I hope somebody here can appreciate it all.

I have more on CD bought in-store, some self-made CDs, some on my computer that I've been collecting for years. You hear any song above that you don't have? Or do you remember hearing them before?

I've always been fascinated by the background instrumental songs.

    Here's more.

I think some of these were from the anime Romance of the Kingdoms originally...
I believe I have this somewhere:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7S9ANL_i57Q
http://youtu.be/7dxhjm80Tus (Titled- 英雄的黎明 ,heard in ROCH95)
I heard this one in several TVB series
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuopDpcWvSc

I think I have this lying around somewhere:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7O2W7My22s

    Ashes of Time OST
http://youtu.be/SiLrvv9uk7c (I have this on CD)

This piece is by S.E.N.S and was played in LOCH94' when Guo Jing first meets Huang Rong in female form and not in the little beggar disguise, but it was also in several other TVB series during the 90s:
    http://youtu.be/xXtQmnAg3P4

Heard this a lot in LOCH94'
    http://youtu.be/Hux3vTPBm2U

Oh, I have heard this one played in DGSD97' and other tv series where there is a pretty girl and the guy sees her.
    http://youtu.be/oEQfQPLZ1vY

    ROCH95'
    http://youtu.be/RrEZDMTMoaA
    http://youtu.be/gG_y8Sr8jyU
http://youtu.be/vk0eoFeQsLk (also heard a lot in Rise of the Taiji Master with Eddie Kwan)
http://youtu.be/IPNiGtCjL8o (and State of Divinity96' -- This is from the Ashes of Time OST)
http://youtu.be/f4_AW8EtQHk (First heard when Li Mo Chou appeared, but I think this is from Ashes of Time OST too, if my memory serves me right..also in SOD96')

This is from the HSDS2000 OST and heard OVERTLY ALOT in Relic of an Emissary (2011)
    http://youtu.be/GY5FiOnXSw4

Heard in Justice Pao I&II, Mystery of the Sabre and other series (I quite like this one)
    http://youtu.be/Mox5NLkjOCo

Ashes of Time OST (May have reposts of some posted already here) - SOD96 (XAJH) uses a lot of the tracks from the OST and I'm sure I've heard it in other TVB Series too
    Track #1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7yJFhe_NjQ (A Lonely Heart)

Yay a bg music thread! Hehe, BM and I are always on the hunt for more.

    Here's my contribution: http://www.esnips.com/web/PrettyMusic

I have about 100 songs on there right now...some of these songs are the ones that SS have already posted. It's been a while since I've updated...a bit lazy, but hope others will be able to enjoy these songs as I have. =)

Neat. I am looking for background music myself.
DGSD 96 has some good instrumentals. One can be heard in the scene where Mu Wan Qing reveals her face to Duan Yu. The other when Wang Yu Yan confesses her love for DY. The other one was kinda like a background music for Duan Yu, whenever he does his fighting or escaping technique. Oh, I'm also looking for an instrumental in Heroes From Shaolin (I also heard it in TVB's Eternity and others too, I'm sure). It's kinda jazzy sounding. Well, when I find them I'll contribute to this thread. Heh.

Awesome! I've been wanting these old ones so bad but didn't know how to get them cause I don't even see them at the stores and I don't really trust to buy online. Thanks for sharing!

I really do think Himekami has some of the best bg music tracks ever. I believe the majority of the bg music in Dragon Love are from them. They're very very underrated, unfortunately.

I remember catching a Taiwanese series, don't know what it was, that liberally borrowed from the Mononoke Hime OST.

If you've watched State of Divinity 96 (XAJH96') and heard a familiar background music that reminded you of Kung Fu The Legend Continues (American TV Series), then you heard right. So they borrowed from Ashes of Time OST and Kung Fu: The Legend Continues OST.

Listen to the following to see if you recognize them:

Kung Fu The Legend Continues OST

    1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJMqG...eature=related
    2) http://youtu.be/4YFWzbGmiVM
    3) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZIucS3DKcw (This is also heard in several TVB series and maybe ATV too)
    4) http://youtu.be/eFRWZxYxJgo (I think there's a version where the woman is singing in Chinese not English)
    5)http://youtu.be/6DCLs9iwUiY
    6) http://youtu.be/5p2HcAKmJFc
    7) http://youtu.be/8bJGlKvO3R0 (Heard in the ATV version of Justice Pao and some other ATV series)
    8)http://youtu.be/lwi_JqqKC98
    9) http://youtu.be/IF1NTow1QX0

Fan of Mystery of the Condor Hero ft. John Chiang, Fiona Leung, Julian Cheung and Emily Kwan?

I can tell you where TVB borrowed the BGM music from The Enchanted Forest: Melodies of Japan by James Galway and Fujikake Hiro - The CD is avaiable on Amazon.com and the Mp3 download as well.

Track 6: Song of the Deep Forest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wbd40Ap9SwY ) -- Heard often scenes between Julian and Emily
    Track 11: Echoes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD8e1afleb0 )

Background music is so important to creating the atmosphere and feeling of the scene, it's almost like BGM are actors working with actors to make a scene great.

TVB during the 80s had more orignal sound tracks and songs, too bad the composer who created all that magic already died.

Joseph Koo hasn't died yet, although he is very old and hasn't composed for TVB in many, many years.

During the 1970s and 1980s, TVB did use many of the scores it commissioned Koo to create for its series, but it nevertheless also borrowed other unrelated music. THE BUND, for example, used music from THE GODFATHER soundtrack (fitting) and some tracks by the British rock band Pink Floyd.

Wasn't there another music composer that died? Mmm...Was Roman Tam just a singer or did he compose stuff too? Don't tell me Joseph Koo is the only one who composed for TVB.

I do love these BGM and they made watching the tv series even more special.

You're thinking of Koo's partner, lyricist Jim Wong. Wong wrote lyrics, not music.

Mmm...Was Roman Tam just a singer or did he compose stuff too?
I don't know if Roman Tam did any songwriting. Certainly, his most famous hit recordings were Joseph Koo/Jim Wong compositions.

Don't tell me Joseph Koo is the only one who composed for TVB.
He was TVB's main go-to-guy for soundtracks during the 1970s and 1980s. TVB did have a few other composers, such as Michael Lai (Siu Teen) and some other dude who shares my surname of "Cheng," but the bulk of the 70s/80s TVB stuff was penned by the Koo/Wong team.

I do love these BGM and they made watching the tv series even more special.
They were arranged and recorded very skillfully and tastefully by Koo and his orchestra. They made good use of the resources they had.

十三夜曲 (Thirteen Serenades) by Himekami (姬神) from album Tsugaru.
Comment: I have heard this piece played in so many tv series, turns out to be from Himekami. I didn't know the composer died in 2004. Hope he's resting in peace. I like this piece too. Sounds sad. This song is most recognizably played in ATV's Snow is Red.
