    Default Recap of 2011 TVB

I don't think this was a particularly great year for TVB series and after watching the awards ceremony this week, it seemed like the focus was pretty much on 5 series:

    Forensic Heroes III
    Ghetto Justice
Lives of Omission (aka Laughing Gor vs Bi Co)
    Curse of the Royal Harem
    Home Troopers

I swear there were more series and as a testament to how memorable (lack thereof) they were, I am going to name them without googling.

    Links to Temptation
    Colorful World of Sister Fa
    Yes Sir, Sorry Sir
7 Days (where they are trapped in hotel)
    Life and Times of Sentinel
    Wax Wane
Devil [something] (with Bobby Auyeung, Tavia, and Ray Lam)
    River of Wine
    Other Truth
    Home for Dinner

    - some other ancient series that Sire Ma won best newcomer or most improved for

    What did I miss?

Did you think the most deserving series or people won the awards?

    The series you missed out

    When Heaven Burns (currently airing)
Relic of an Emissary (that other Sire Ma's ancient series)
    'Bottled Passion' (currently airing)
Super Snoops (the 3 Gods series)
The Rippling Blossom (that sushi series starring Julian Cheung)

The devil series official title is 'Men With No Shadows'.

Thanks Kidd - I'm actually watching When Heaven Burns which I think is a better series than the rest for the year. And caught an episode of Bottled Passion - its too turn of the century melodramatic for me.

Enjoyed Rippling Blossom, for some reason I thought it was 2010 series, if only for Black Eyed Fish God.

smurf120. Of all the series Tavia acted in this year, she was nominated for her role in TRB. That's why I remember this series. I thought she would be nominated for MWNS or TOT.

Agree with you. WHB is the best series of this year. Too bad it didn't do very well in ratings.

Not a great year at all for TVB. I liked Ghetto Justice and Yes Sir Sorry Sir. Lives of Omission could have been better. Forensic Heroes III was pretty good but didn't meet my expectations. Best series this year is When Heaven Burns. It's a shame that it has low ratings. People are missing out.

I thought Other Justice was acted very well but cliche and boring script.

Sentinel and Relic completely jumbled up in my brain as the same series - I think I skipped a number of scenes in each.

Wax and Wane only had Roger Kwok propping it up, Sonny was really annoying.

    I finally googled it:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_TVB_series_(2011)

Only You - completely forgot about it but I did enjoy some parts - particularly the Indian wedding
A Great Way to Care - remember watching it a couple of years ago - the pseudo House series??
    Dropping by Cloud 9 - forgettable...completely forgettable
Grace Under Fire - I have no idea what this is
Show Me the Happy - Roger Kwok as a doctor...meh

i watch this over dinner with my family. while it's clear the directing is of a higher class than the rest of the series and focuses more on the abstract rather than their typical straightforward heavy-handedness, it is painfully slow and uneven

Great chance (s)he is talking about WHB. Used the best words possible to describe that series.

WHB is clearly not a dinner time movie with family. I can watch almost any other series whilst gaming, between commercials watching another tv program, reading a book, doing spreadsheets, eating dinner, checking email, chatting on the phone, IMing, listening to music - and still have a general idea of the plot and dialogue (which says much about general quality of tv these days). I have to watch WHB in complete silence without forwarding a single scene - perhaps even rewatching missed scenes, most often late at night before I go to bed or early weekend morning.

LOL - brings me back to the days when I watch shows without the option of doing all the multitasking....

Haha, I also have the same experience as smurf120. For other series, I can watch computer game. I can follow the series just by glancing on the series on and off and listening to the dialogues. But, for WHB, I cannot do that. I have to play full attention because this series like to show instead of tell.

Yep I was referring to WHB, sorry I wasn't clear.

It happens to be on at 8:00 over here, so no choice but to watch it then -- I'm not a big fan of it yet so haven't bothered to download and rewatch at another time.

I haven't really been watching it too closely after the first 8 or so episodes, but I remember thinking it might flow better if it was a 20 or 25 episode series. Then again a major component of the show is developing characters and relationships so in that sense the longer the better as you can include more throwaway or intimate scenes, but it feels somewhat slow and I know I've lost interest because of it. Too many episodes where nothing happens.

I'm throwing Bottled Passion under the underwhelming pile for 2011.

I came to the revelation this morning that Tavia Yeung is a very good actress, but to date I do not remember any of her characters except the ones that that TVB shoves down my throat (i.e. Queen in BTROC - laughing maniacally, Sai Lai Mui (can't remember the series) - was it the one with Raymond Lam?).

I do remember her very well in Eternal Happiness and Twin of Brothers - side characters both but memorable for her quiet strength. Saw hints of that in Other Truth. I don't know if I hate the series more but certainly don't like her ditsy damsel in distressedness in Men with No Shadows.
