Sunny Chan opens up about autistic son, seeks help for child
HONG KONG: Hong Kong actor Sunny Chan revealed during a recent magazine interview that his 4-year-old son is autistic, and said he hopes to find help for the child by speaking to the press about his son's condition, reported Hong Kong media.
"We are willing to talk about it (his son's autism) because we want to see if anyone can help him.
"We are just normal parents and don't know how to care for an autistic child," said Chan following his shocking revelation.
"You can say he is smart, say he is stupid or troublesome, but if no specialist had been on hand to instruct us on how to teach him, he would still be illiterate.
"We have to face up to reality and not hide his condition. This is the only way to be fair to him," added Chan.
The actor expressed that it had been very difficult bringing up his autistic son.
"He is different from other children, unsociable and distrusting.
"If you tell him beef is on the menu today and serve pork, he will feel like you lied to him and refuse to eat."
"He doesn't accept your help or teachings and lives in his own world. When I call out to him, he ignores me, he ignores his own parents!" said Chan.
Despite the difficulties, Chan has met with some success educating his son and plans to have a second child eventually.
"I read a lot of books and consulted a lot of people.
"They say having a second child will do both the child (Chan's autistic
son) and his parents good," said Chan, who also appealed to the paparazzi to stop harassing his young son.
"Don't frighten my son. If you need photos of my son, I can provide them!"
