Just out of curiosity, is the fact that Lu Peng was Wang Shan's disciple something of a surprise for you or do all of you know it all along? Do you think the plot is intrigued enough or do I need to make it more complexed than this? Please give me some assessment, so I can make the story better. (or at least I can try)

This chapter is dedicated to my most favorite children story, My Sweet Orange Tree by Jose Vasconcelos. I have a limited knowledge in horticulture, so if the description below is against the factual nature, please imagine your own version of a correct plant.

Part II: Book of Saber

Chapter 13
After Ten Years

Characters list (not in particular order):
Tian Fei by Adam Cheng Siu Chow
Liu Tong by Ray Lui Leung Wai
De Pang by Liu Kai Chi
Man He by Simon Yam Tat Wah
Mu Zhen by Lau Ching Wan
Xian You by Eddie Kwan Lai Kit
Ah Zhu by Yeung Pan Pan
Xun Ci Shi Tai by Lui Yau Wai
Ah Ju by Idy Chan Yuk Lin
Gu Xiaofei by Kathy Chow Hoi Mei
Chu Lianhua by Jamie Chic Mei Chun
Zhan Zhiying by Sheren Tang Siu Mun
Mrs. Zhan by Carol Cheng Yu Ling

An orange tree was planted. In the spring, numerous white blossoms were in full blooms, tempting bees and butterflies to their fresh fragrance. In the summer, the tree bore tiny fruits among green leaves. By the autumn, golden fruits became big and round. Then it was time for the sweet, ripen oranges to be picked up, leaving only leaves as the tree’s companion. In the winter, green leaves changed to yellow and to brown and finally fell down. Snow clothed the bare tree in white suit and wrapped its branches with frosty shawl.

Days after days, seasons after seasons, they had come and gone. Years in years out, the orange tree thrived under all conditions, and so did little children. A decade had passed; adults had aged, and children had grown. During these ten years, Tian Fei and Liu Tong had traveled around China to punish the wrongs and help the needy. Along with their heroic deeds, the fame of the Sword South School had spread even into the outside of the martial world. For once, the nature had been kind to farmers, and the Imperial Court was temporarily in peace. Every face could at last smile in full stomach and in warm clothes.

Only Tian Fei’s heart was in gloom. However hard he tried, he could never forget the two Yue sisters. Every place he visited, he always kept his eyes and ears open for a glimpse of Yue Feng or a melodic voice of Yue Ling. But fate didn’t deem that it was the time yet. Thus he could only continue his yearnings for his lost family alone.

Wu Dang and Emei Sects were by no means in less standing. Under the guidance of De Pang, the eldest of the five Wu Dang brothers, no criminals would dare to step within 100 li of the Hu Bei area. Together with Xun Ci Shi Tai of Emei, the five Wu Dang heroes stood as the main pillars of the martial arts world. These two sects’ destinies were intertwined with each other ever since the day their founders, Zhang Jun Bao and Guo Xiang had memorized parts of the ‘9 Yang Zhen Jing’ (Grand Solar Manual) from Jue Yuan Monk of Shaolin Temple.

Fifteen years ago, the marriage between Man He, the third brother of Wu Dang, and Ah Zhu, the third disciple of Emei, strengthened the tie between the two sects. Now, the liaison was furthered into another level by the engagement between the fifth Wu Dang hero, Xian You, and the fifteenth disciple of Emei, Xiaofei.

As for Ah Ju, although she had many admirers – including the fourth brother of Wu Dang, her heart had already lost to Liu Tong, who was still oblivious of her feeling. Much to her master’s protest though secretly pleased, she remained unmarried and in its place devoted all her time in practicing martial arts along with helping Xun Ci Shi Tai in training new apprentices. Without the three senior martial sisters, Ah Ju became the most senior disciple in Emei. With the new status came more responsibilities, as a result, she was no longer a lively girl who, along with Ah Zhu, liked to play pranks on her fellow disciples. Instead, she grew into a somber mature woman with grace and beauty that only could be attained through time.

Among the new generation, the three apprentices stood out the most in martial skills and in the priestess’ favors – not less than the ‘Four Beauties of Emei’ from twenty years ago. Gu Xiaofei, the fiancé of the fifth Hero Xian of Wu Dang, was the most senior of the three. The sixteenth disciple was called Chu Lianhua, and the most junior one was Zhan Zhiying . All three young women were close in age, ranging from 15 to 17 years old. They were adopted by the priestess since their childhood, and all but Zhiying had no parents.

Today, Zhan Zhiying was calling on her only relatives, her mother. Since the day that they both were rescued from the horrific fire at the inn, Emei had become their only home. Under the gentle care of Ah Ju, Zhiying, a little girl whom Liu Tong rescued from the fire ten years ago, had regained her health in no times. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for her mother. The mother’s life was saved from excellent medicines of Emei, but the cruel incident that day had left her mind in confused state. She was not crazy, but she was not completely sane either. Most of the times, she was a gentle and loving mother. Yet, the minute that she laid eyes on any man, she became violent and could not be restrained. Every man she saw would be accused of being the murderer of her husband. For this reason, she was given a tiny cottage at one back corner of Emei and was not allowed to leave her abode under any conditions. Accordingly, everyone in the sect had pretty much forgotten her existence saved Zhiying who was her only faithful visitor.

This morning, Mrs. Zhan was still in bed, exhausted. Yesterday, some new male apprentices trespassed into her quarter unwittingly, resulting in one of her frenzy spells. Although she had no martial skills, she was a very strong and muscular woman due to a life of hard labor works. When she went wild, she became very formidable for not only she would attack savagely to every nearby person, but she also took to beating herself relentlessly. In the end, Xun Ci Shi Tai had to be called. With her whisk, she quickly immobilized the poor woman and for once avoided any further bloodshed.

Zhiying watched her asleep mother and sighed with pity. In that second, anger entered her heart. If the man who was the cause of all these miseries were here, she would gladly slice off his flesh piece by piece and tore out his heart with her own hands. However, ten years of religion study had nurtured her into a calm, thoughtful, and forgiving woman in addition to her gentle and kind nature-self – thanks to Ah Ju’s foresight teaching. Instantly, her anger melted away as quickly as it came. She heaved another sigh and left the cottage in silence.

Slowly, she walked to the Learning Hall, where all disciples received daily instruction in Kung Fu. Afraid of being late, she quickened her steps. However, when she got there, only her sixteenth senior sister, Lianhua, was there to greet her.

“Where is everyone?” Zhiying asked, looking around at the empty big hall.

“Hmm, we have guests from Wu Dang, so fourth senior sister and fifteenth senior sister have to be there to greet them. Since Master is not here, everyone else just dispersed to catch a glimpse at the famous heroes of Wu Dang. I only remain here to take you with me.” A pretty girl with lively eyes answered her junior sister. Dimples showed up on her face when she smiled mischievously.

“Did all five of them come?” Zhiying was curious. She had never stepped outside the Emei vicinity all these years and hardly ever met any outsiders.

Lianhua shook her head, exposing her white lovely neck. Her beautiful dark brown hair coiled itself gracefully along her shoulders. Zhiying could not help but admired her senior sister’s beauty. ‘Aside from fourth senior sister, sister Lianhua is the prettiest one among us,’ she thought.

The two girls were now moving swiftly toward the Great Hall, which was the main building of Emei. It was flanked both sides by residence halls for Emei disciples – men, though small in number, in the left building, and women in the right one. The martial arts practice place or the Learning Hall was in the back of the Great Hall. There were also small structures such as kitchen and bathhouses scattering around the area.

While hurrying along, Lianhua explained to her junior sister in soft, musical voice. “Only Hero Mu and Hero Xian are here. They are the fourth and the fifth brothers respectively. They bring the good news from third senior sister and her husband, Hero Man. Ah Zhu is pregnant! And after a long fifteen years of marriage too! It seems we are going to have double cerebration this year – a new baby and a wedding. Who know, we might have another one as well.” She rolled her eyes and laughed.

Zhiying halted and held back her senior sister. “Oh! Don’t let fourth senior sister hear your last sentence. She gets very angry whenever a person suggests her pairing up with Hero Mu of Wu Dang. She said that she would never love him, and she would follow Master’s footsteps into priesthood in a couple of years.”

Lianhua only stuck her tongue out and smiled impishly. Though they have different personalities, they loved each other like blood sisters. Lianhua was sixteen years old, while Zhiying was fifteen this year. They were often seen together – one forever plotted the mischief, while one tried to discourage the other from conducting it. Both girls reminded Ah Ju of herself and Ah Zhu. As a result, she often found no heart to punish the sixteenth junior sister for her shenanigans.

When they reached the main hall, they went straight to their usual hiding place, behind picture screens that covered the whole length of the back area of the room, where they could observe the meeting without being seen. Some other disciples were also there. Carefully and quietly, they settled down as they heard Ah Ju talking to someone.

“Thank you for coming all this distance to let us know of good news. Master will be glad to hear this. Unfortunately, she is in the meditation room at the moment. Otherwise, she would have insisted you to stay for a chat.” By the last sentence, Ah Ju cleverly hinted that it was really not appropriated for the two men to remain here very long.

“Uh, it was really our pleasure. We were passing here anyway, and we think that you will be delighted to hear it in person.” A soft, forlorn voice answered Ah Ju. The speaker was a man around 35 years old. He wore a thin mustache and a short beard. He was looking lingeringly at Ah Ju at the moment, trying to think up some more excuses to stay at Emei a little longer. Hearing his wistful voice, Lianhua couldn’t help snickering aloud.

As soon as Ah Ju heard the laugh, she called out angrily, “Who’s there? Come out here this minute.”

Not wanting to expose the rest of her fellow apprentices, Lianhua came out from behind the screen meekly. Mu Zhen did not pay attention to the newcomer as he had all his eyes for Ah Ju, but his junior brother, Xian You, could not help but being stunned by the breathtaking beauty in front of him. Lianhua saw his unconcealed admiration in his eyes and turned pink from embarrassment. She immediately hid behind Ah Ju. Gu Xiaofei saw it all, and she was livid. ‘I am no less beautiful than sixteenth junior sister is. Then how come he never looks at me like that?’ She was so jealous of Lianhua that she almost burst her thought out loud, but stopped herself in time. Nevertheless, her face showed her obvious displeased.

Ah Ju politely apologized to the two guests. She frowned at her two junior sisters and ordered the younger one to go kneel outside the portal of the Learning Hall to await the punishment. After another brief chat, she escorted her guests out of Emei, said farewell, and walked away without looking back.

Mu Zhen gazed at the receding figure of Ah Ju and sighed longingly. He was pulled back to the present by the eager voice of his junior brother. “Senior brother Mu, did you see the pretty apprentice that came out from behind the screen? I’ve never seen anyone that beautiful before in my life.”

Mu Zhen replied in an unemotional voice, “No, not really. By the way, junior brother Xian, you should not look at other women because you are already engaged to Miss Gu. She will be upset if she hears this.”

Xian You didn’t reply. He was not happy at the approaching wedding date between Gu Xiaofei and him. It was the arranged marriage for the sake of relationships between Emei and Wu Dang. He did not love her though he would not mind having her as his bride. However, he wished to stay bachelor for a little while longer to appreciate more beauties in women and nature.

The two men continued their journey, each was thinking of a disciple of Emei. Mu thought of Ah Ju, and Xian thought of Lianhua.

Author's note:
* Li is an ancient Chinese measurement. It’s about ½ kilometers long.

* Hu Bei is the province where Wu Dang was located.

* Zhang Jun Bao and Guo Xiang are characters in Jin Yong’s Heavenly Sword and Dragon Saber. According to his novel, Zhang Jun Bao established Wu Dang, and Guo Xiang established Emei.

* The names of these three girls (Xiaofei, Lianhua, and Zhiying) refer to three flowers – peony, water lily, and iris respectively.

A rather boring but necessary chapter. I need to recap the story and introduce new characters. Thank you for reading. Please leave some comments.

Part II: Book of Saber

Chapter 14
Birds leave their Nest

Characters list (not in particular order):
Medicine Man .....................................…......… Chun Wong
Dragon Lady .....................................……..….. Helena Law Lan
Ru Yu ...............................………...............… ...Rain Lau Yuk Chui
Di Bao .....................................…............ .……..Roger Kwok Chun On
Lu Lu ................................................…… ….….Gigi Chiu Ngar Chi

A small white hand threw pebbles into a pond one after another, creating waves after waves – not unlike the turbulence in the thrower’s heart. The hand reached down for more rocks when a brown masculine hand held it still. The pebble thrower looked up, tensed, but relaxed when she saw its owner. “Ah Bao! I’m just about to go look for you. I need someone to talk to.” She exclaimed.

Di Bao smiled quietly at his senior sister. He leaned back against a trunk of a willow tree, listening patiently to her.

Ru Yu was gazing at the landscape in front with troubled eyes. A row of willows bent over the edge of the small pond; their billowing branches reached down into the water as if to imitate ducks in the pond that were dipping their beaks repeatedly into the water to look for food. The scenery was serene, yet she gained no peace from it. She said, “During these past two days that you and Lu Lu were gone to look for rare herbs, Grandpa and Grandma had another quarrel that became a physical fight. This time, I had to resort to fainting to prevent them from hurting each other. The cause of the fight was the usual topic – my mother. From what I have been gathering from bits and pieces, Grandpa and Grandma have always quarreled like this since the day they married. Grandpa, being a healer at heart, could not condone Grandma’s practice of poison on anyone even though those people were evil. Despite his promise not to work against her, he secretly cured many of her victims. Eventually, Grandma caught on to him. Needless to say, they had a terrible fight. Even my mother could do nothing about it – she was barely six years old then. Angrily, Grandma took Mother away to her home in the western part, which is this place.

For the love of his daughter – my mother – Grandpa pursued them relentlessly. However, he couldn’t find the entrance to this forest. So, he waited patiently outside for ten years. Finally, Mother succeeded in talking Grandma into letting him enter her forest. From that day on, my grandparents have been staying here in separate huts with that of my mother’s in the middle – just like how we live now. Nevertheless, they didn’t forget their swearing about not to look at each other’s face ever again – that’s why they always cover their faces when they come out of their cottages.”

Ru Yu sighed. “Last night, I asked them how my mother had died. For the first time, they told me the story of hers though not without some reluctance. Grandpa began with accusing Grandma of causing Mother to run away from home. Grandma in turn said that he was the one who made his daughter’s life so unbearable that she had to leave her only home. It seems that Mother somehow disappeared when she turned eighteen. She was gone for three years. When she came back, she was pregnant with me. Then she delivered me and died.”

Di Bao lifted one of his eyebrows in question, and Ru Yu replied, “No, I don’t know who my father is. They would not tell me. Or maybe they don’t know that themselves. No matter what, I decided to go find my father. I want to know him. I want to know what had happened between him and Mother. Ah Bao, that’s why I want to see you. You are leaving here in two days, and I want to go with you. Grandpa and Grandma would never let me go alone, but they will trust me with you. Lu Lu can stay here to be their company.” She persuaded him in a cooing voice, “You don’t know Kung Fu, but I do. I can help you find your brother, and you can help me find my father. Actually, I can be your bodyguard, while you are my chaperone. See it works both ways? What do you think?” She looked at her junior brother with intent hope.

Di Bao thought awhile and nodded in agreement; Ru Yu jumped up with joy. Together, they went back to their huts, which had now grown into five in number according to the number of the household members. Immediately, she called out for her grandparents. When they came out, she eagerly proposed the plan to them, and of course, omitted the detail on a quest for her father.

The two elders gaped at their loving granddaughter unbelievably a moment or two then the old man spoke first resignedly. “I’ve always known this day will come. Yu-er, are you sure you want to go? Outside is full of bad people. They could harm you and Ah Bao.”

His granddaughter confirmed, “Yes, I do. I’ve always want to see what the outside world is like? Please, just this once. I’ll be back as soon as Ah Bao finds his brother.

His wife burst into tears and cried out, “Oh, don’t leave us! Yu-er, if it was our quarrel the other day that made you go…” She pleaded and angrily turned to Di Bao, “Ah Bao, did you put that idea in her head?”

Her husband was more sensible. He glared at his wife and told her to stop thinking nonsense. “Of course not! It’s just time that a bird has to leave its nest. At least, she has Di Bao with her. He is an intelligence lad, and he will protect her out there...”

The grandmother cut in, “But, her mother went away too. And look what happened…” She caught herself just in time. Her husband looked at her warningly. Then he went over and whispered a few sentences to her, and she turned scarlet from that. Gruffly, she conceded to her granddaughter’s wish. “All right, you can go. Promise me one thing though. Try not to fall in love, but if you do, you’ve to bring him home to us.”

Amused, Ru Yu promised her grandmother solemnly. Yet, the old woman was not satisfied yet. She started lecturing to Di Bao, “And you’d better look after her with your life. Be alert. Beware of all evil men out there…”

She would have gone on and on, if her husband hadn’t put a stop to it by waving the two youngsters away to get ready for the journey. Gratefully, they escaped to the back garden. Ru Yu cried with relief, “Wow, that went better than I thought. I have to thank you, my junior brother. Without you, they’d never let me go this easily. Please receive this thank from me.” She bowed to Di Bao prettily and skipped away to prepare for her lifetime trip.

Later that night, Medicine Man came into Di Bao’s hut. He sat down and sighed. “Ah Bao, we have to rely on you for Ru Yu’s safety this time. Please don’t fail us. She’s all we have now.” The young man nodded in reply. He smiled gently at his elder, which made the old man once again sighed. “Thank you. I know you will. And after I have failed to cure your muteness too.” He mumbled, “I don’t understand what I did wrong. I’ve tried everything that I can think of. Your throat looks fine now, yet you still cannot speak.” He looked at his young apprentice suspiciously, “Are you keeping mum for some reasons, boy?” Then he shook his head. “No, that’s not possible. We have had many tests before, and why would you want to be mute all your life anyway? It’s a good thing that you don’t bother by it. Yu-er can do you good too by going with you. She can chat enough for both of you.” He got up slowly, “I’ve to go now. My wife is packing every possible medicine in our houses for you two. It became quite a huge bundle, I tell you.” With a chuckle, he left.

The traveling day had arrived. Medicine Man and Dragon Lady cried shamelessly as the sight of their most precious treasure, their granddaughter, gradually disappeared. Lu Lu was the only one who kept a brave face. She only came back from her herb picking last night. As if she knew what was going on, she went straight to her young kindred spirit friend. She put something in his hand and said, “Here, take this. I’ve always wanted to give you this jade. I received it from someone who loved me very much. Hope that it would bring true love to you too. I’ll be thinking of you when I see the orange tree that we planted together.” She sighed softly, “Too bad this coming summer, you won’t be here to help me eat those sweet fruits.”

Di Bao clasped her hands firmly then he gave her a brief hug. Nothing else was needed. They understood each other so well that spoken words would not suffice what they could tell to each other through their eyes and their minds.

Ru Yu was sad to leave her only home, but was also full with joy and excitement to see a new world. After tearful farewells, she pranced away impatiently before her grandparents might have changed their minds.

Di Bao took a last look at his home for the past ten years. Now, he could continue his own quest in peace. His friend, Lu Lu, was completely cured from the poison effect. She became a sane and healthy woman with glowing beauty. That was enough for him. ‘I’ll return here one day with my brother and the southern gentleman. I’m sure they’ll be delighted to meet her.’ He smiled happily at the thought.

Thus two birds flew from home to begin their new adventures.

Poor Whitekrane, but don't overexhaust yourself. I feel the pain. I also don't have time off anymore these days except for a few hours here and there. So much studying.. but I don't mind. I guess life is about hardships, stress, more stress and trials.

The only thing that seem to ease all the stress is a "fiction" book instead of those damn m.d books required to memorized. I like to thank you and goofy for taking me back to my childhood, something I miss so dearly. Days of euphoria, day-dreaming, being absorbed into a state of a pleasurable fiction with every chapter passing by. I actually had a good rest last night after reading goofy's fanfic, instead of the usual nightmare and constant anxiety I go through each night.
You ladies sure have talent. I can't remember the last time I used my imagination so well. Thank you......

How I long for these years to go by faster.
I wonder if the cherry blossom this year in D.C is as beautiful as it was the last time I saw it many years ago.....

Cool

Gotrice4free, the cherry blossoms will probably be beautiful as people deem them to be, but they would not be the same ones as those from last year or those in the next year.

Your mentioning about cherry blossoms reminds me of the lines that XLN in roch83 said to Southern Emperor (monk).

Something to this effect - snow melts but will come back. But the new snow is not the same as the one from last year nor it would be the same as the new snow next year.

Sounds a little like eh...

Man, i'm pretty poetic tonight. Must be the green tea.

Anyone here can use my quote for their fanfic. Especially if the story involves a dramatic change whether its death, etc, and the main character standing on top of a cliff, with a bottle of wine, saying to himself "Though it's not the same as it used to be, but surely it hasn't change my mind's memories........"

Wow, what a scene!

Whitekrane,

You know I'll never overcook my rice.
I watch the fire, and water quite well. Years of living by myself have given me the advantage in this art.
