Yay! Thanks for starting a thread for 一触即发, xia0yuer! Maybe we should transfer the postings of our discussion on 一触即发 from the Wallace Chung thread over to this thread?

Double Yay! haha thanks for making this thread xia0yuer. This drama is truly a gem! It's well-paced, with absolutely no draggy parts. The story is incredibly well written and complex; every episode will keep you on the edge of your seat. I really recommend people watch this! Wallace plays two characters and does it flawlessly. This drama is, in my opinion is one of the best dramas out there.

    Talking

I started to transfer all of our posts from the Wallace Chung thread over to this one, but it's too difficult and disjointed, especially since we quoted each other before responding. So I'm just going to post the link to the 一触即发 discussion. Go to this link to read the discussions in the Wallace Chung thread, if anyone is interested.

一触即发 discussions start from this post onward:

Or maybe we could ask kidd (moderator for this forum) to move the posts over for us?

I think Wallace is memorizing his lines in that last pic.

Wallace Chung interview on 一触即发. Interesting... Wallace thinks that in the end, the two brothers sort of merged in terms of personality as they complement each other so well. Can someone with better Mandarin knowledge confirm this?

Here's my latest post pertaining to 一触即发 from the Wallace Chung thread. At least, we can start discussing the drama from here on in this thread.

But, then towards the middle of story Ah Ci's storyline really pulled me in. hehe... although, ultimately I enjoyed watching both brothers. Without either one of them the drama wouldn't feel complete! Wallace is amazing, isn't he? He handled both characters so well
You know what I just figured out after re-watching certain parts of 一触即发? I think part of the reason why Ah Ci is so attractive despite his emotional baggage is because Wallace Chung just excels in portraying intense characters who present themselves as strong and stoic but have a hidden layer of vulnerability and sadness within! And that is exactly the description of what Ah Ci is like! While Wallace also does very well as the more easy-going, humorous, and flirtatious Ah Chu, his Ah Ci is more hypnotic. With Wallace's excellent portrayal of the wounded hero, you can't help but want to hug Ah Ci. As for Ah Chu, you can't help but want to bat your eyelashes at him because he is so fun to be with. Yet, it is Ah Ci that your heart cries for and that is what I think makes Ah Ci an interesting character. Ah, Wallace! I wish he would play more identical twin roles because I just love seeing him in practically every scene! It is as if 一触即发 is designed solely for Wallace fans.

About Ah Ci not realizing something was strange with his parents... I honestly think that for 25 years he's been avoiding the problem and just didn't want to know, for fear that the answer is something ugly. Ah Ci may appear strong and in control, but in truth he's probably constantly living in fear of the unexpected things that he may encounter. His parents is, in a way the only stability he has in his life. It's sad.
I agree. Again, like I mentioned above, Ah Ci is the perfect wounded hero, strong and steady on the outside, but vulnerable and with a tinge of sadness on the inside. Wallace does a marvelous job of bringing this character to life.

About Ah Chu and Ya Shu, I guess what I didn't like about Ya Shu was how weepy she was. I understand that given her situation there must be some internal conflict going on within her, but I felt it went on for way too long. Her involvement and identity made things more complicated, and I do appreciate that as it created more conflict and development for the story. But, then at the same time the character just annoyed me, really. lol, I think I would have also preferred if her character remained the same as in the novel. I might have actually liked her and her relationship with Ah Chu better that way.
I liked Ya Shu a lot more when she was playing the bratty spoiled girl in the beginning of the drama. Then she got weepy and started clinging to Ah Chu for a few episodes, which should have annoyed me, but strangely it didn't because I found her scenes incredibly sweet and lovely, where she would run directly into Ah Chu's arms and he would embrace her with such protectiveness and love.

Yikes! Wallace looks especially handsome in that last pic! And gosh, he looks so manly, loving, and protective hugging Yang Rui in the second pic!

I wish all male doctors are as hot as Wallace in this drama. Too bad they aren't...

    Me too!

One thing I didn't really understand is that in the first episode they introduced Rong Chu as a "bo shi" from the Royal English Academy of Medicine. I thought that bo shi means PhD, not MD but he acts as both a MD and a scientist in the drama. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, who is that guy who masquerades as Rong Hua's fiancee? I know that he is important to the Sound of Thunder Mission but I'm still confused as to what exactly his position is.

I'm not quite sure about Chinese terminology for professional degrees. Maybe Rong Chu is a MD/PhD, in which he has double degrees as a medical doctor who sees patients clinically and also does biomedical research. It doesn't matter, xia0yuer. Just know that he's handsome, intelligent, and hot. Who cares what degree(s) he has?

This I have no clue. I'm probably more confused than you are, since half of the time, I don't understand the espionage/political plot.

The entire series is already posted on youtube by EyesOnWallace, if you haven't seen this drama yet. It's really exciting. Never a dull moment in the drama, like genna said. I highly recommend it, whether or not you're a Wallace fan.

genna - Seagd927 responded to my message regarding the novel. She doesn't have the link to the novel anymore, but she has the text file saved and will be sending it to my email account. I can forward it to you once I receive it. Send me a PM and let me know which email address you would like me to forward the file to.

Also, seagd927 made some very interesting comments about the drama/novel that I would like to share here. There are some spoilers regarding the ending.

    seagd927 wrote:

The ending of the novel is rather abrupt and many people felt the author ended it in a rush. In fact, the author did admit to that. He said that towards the end of his writing, he was already contacted by the producers to write the screen play for this drama. So he didn't have the time to end the novel "properly." He apologized for it. He also said that the ending in the TV series leaves a possibility for a sequel. He indicated that the sequel would begin with Ah Chu investigating Ah Ci's death. Of course, whether or not there is a sequel would depend on the rating of this TV series and the producers. Wallace has never acted in a sequel before, not even in one of his own TV series (内线, 火线追凶, for example). If so, I won't be watching that sequel either.

Many viewers did not think Ah Ci was really dead, there were too many plot holes towards the end, and there was no dead body. But the author assured them that Ah Ci is really dead....

Also, most viewers did not think Ah Chu and Ya Shu were married, even though they all thought they had definitely "rolled between the sheets". Ya Shu wanted a proper wedding (she asked the unconscious Ah Chu for a diamond ring and a wedding dress in the basement of that bank). This is indication that at least they were not married at that time. After this mission, the timeline was too tight for them to have a proper wedding. And even though her hair style changed from long loose hair to a braided updo (usually indicative of a married woman), Rong Hua always had this hair style too, and she was single. Lastly, in the scene when they were parting, Ah Chu told Ya Shu, "if you want to become my woman, then please go." He didn't say "if you still want to be my woman/wife."

    My response to her:

Thanks for the interesting insights on the novel and drama. I suspect that if they were to make a sequel, Ah Ci would probably be "resurrected," given the twins' popularity with the audience. I certainly wouldn't mind that. According to genna, the ratings for this series is very high, so I hope there is a sequel. However, if the old cast members (especially Wallace) aren't going to be in the sequel, then I probably wouldn't watch it. I don't like sequels where they just randomly change actors. It just lacks continuity. Plus, why mess with a cast that already works well and is loved by the audience? Finally, I simply can't imagine any other actor who could be Ah Chu/Ah Ci after watching Wallace's incredible performance. Any other actor would now simply pale in the role.

I had my suspicions about whether Ya Shu and Ah Chu were officially married or simply living together, too, but I just sort of assumed they were married since Ah Chu hinted to Ah Ci that he should call Ya Shu sister-in-law. I think if there is a sequel, I bet they would have Ya Shu pregnant just to complicate the storyline a bit. I hope, however, that they won't have Ah Chu and Yu Xiao Jiang (the woman who loves Ah Ci) fall in love. It would be an unnecessary love triangle among Ya Shu, Ah Chu, and Xiao Jiang. I also love the fact that Ah Chu is so faithful and loving to Ya Shu that if he were to discard Ya Shu and fall in love with someone else, Ah Chu's attractiveness would lessen in my eyes. If Ah Ci is to truly remain dead in the sequel, I would rather that Xiao Jiang fade into the background or remain a platonic associate and that the screenwriter keep the Ya Shu-Ah Chu relationship faithful and simple. I don't need to see unnecessary love triangles and would prefer that the sequel focus on action and the development of the existing characters and some new characters.

Before this drama was released, a fan made a MV using Wallace's character in Shanghai Wang as Yang Mu Ci and his character in Nie Xian as Rong Chu. It's pretty creative.

1st Video - Wallace said that in the beginning A'Chu was carefree but by the end of the drama, he had a greater sense of responsibility. A'Ci shouldered a lot of responsibilities but became more carefree in the end. In the process of acting, Wallace felt that the two characters had basically merged in personality.

2nd - I skipped most of this one because Wallace didn't talk much but I do remember that at the end, the person who acted as Rong Sheng told Wallace that he is and will always be considered a good actor. Wallace acted kind of embarrassed about the compliment. So cute!

3rd - Rong Sheng talks about a time the Wallace realized that Rong Sheng's black socks didn't match his brown shoes. The costume designer didn't have any neutral colored socks so Wallace took his socks off and gave them to Rong Sheng. This was the scene that A'Chu had to tie Rong Sheng's shoes so the socks would be noticed. Wallace jokes that he didn't give him day-old socks and that Rong Sheng shouldn't worry because he had just put those socks on. They also reminisce about their TLTSILY days, when Wallace was Murong Feng and Rong Sheng acted as Shen Jia Ping. Rong Sheng says that Wallace's Mandarin has improved a lot since those days. Appparently in TLTSILY, Wallace had trouble saying a few lines and Rong Sheng told him to read newspapers aloud to practice his Mandarin. I actually think Wallace's Mandarin is really good; his accent is so slight that it's almost not noticeable. On the other hand, Hawick Lau's Cantarin... Well, it's sufficient to say that Hawick needs to spend some more time reading newspapers aloud.

4th - Wallace says that he liked the character of A'Chu better in the beginning because he was good with women (LOL) but was later seduced by A'Ci's manlier character (DOUBLE LOL).

Thank you so much, xia0yuer, for the translations of the 4 video clips! The translations are very helpful! I laughed when I read your translation of Wallace's comment in the 4th video clip. It appeared that he was also charmed by Ah Chu's personality until he discovered Ah Ci's finer points. Hmm... I wonder if Wallace realizes how good with the ladies he is, because he obviously has tons of female fans sighing over how handsome he is. But I want to say that I don't think Ah Chu lacks manliness at all! In fact, he is quite manly and macho as mob boss with his authoritative air.

I'm on EP 20 now. Now, I totally know what Wallace meant by A'Ci seduces you with his manliness. His quiet, dignified demeanor when in the torture chamber is so heart wrenching. And when A'Chu said to Ya Shu, "With my love, I want to buy your heart" I just swooned from his sweetness.

A'Ci or A'Chu, it's such a hard decision, can I please just have both?

Other than A'Chu and A'Ci, who are your favorite characters?

lol, I've been defending Ah Ci all this time, but I really do like Ah Chu as well. Both of them are charming in different ways. One of the things I really admire about Ah Chu is his ability to keep a clear mind at all times, and never let his emotions get in the way. His playful personality relaxes you amidst all the tension and you just can't help but smile whenever you see him.

    SPOILERS!

I don't really understand what caused A'Ci to be a double agent for both the Nationalists and the Communists.
Ah Ci was a Communist all along. He's an undercover agent for them within the Nationalist Party to help alert the Communists of the plans of the Nationalists.

Also, who is that guy who masquerades as Rong Hua's fiancee? I know that he is important to the Sound of Thunder Mission but I'm still confused as to what exactly his position is.
I remember they said he was a representative from Russia(?) but, I'm not sure if that was simply part of his fake identity. Basically though the Communists hoped that he could approve of their project and give them some funds to make the antidote. They needed to set up a time where they can all meet. So, before then they have to keep him under protection. There might have been more to it, but that was all I caught. lol

Thanks Melanie! I'll send you a PM now ^^

Sequel?! Yes! I want one, but only if they continue from where this one ended. I hate "sequels" where the main characters are no longer a part of the drama. There's really no point calling it a sequel then. I definitely think there is so much more they can talk about, especially with the way they ended it off. I mean there's a whole 7-8 years of the Japanese invasion that they can work with. And I'm definitely not against seeing Ah Ci come back! lol... but I am also fine if they focus the story on Ah Ci. Since, like Wallace said, both brothers seemed to have merged into one by the end of the drama.
