Yang Guo never even semi-dominated in the way that Guo Jing did in LOCH pre Heavy Iron Sword; he was always losing in pure martial arts but escapes by craftiness. Guo Jing after the Peach Blossom Island arc pretty much completely wrecks anyone that isn't a Great; and even against Qiu Qianren (because of main character shield imo) he performs extremely well.

Yang Guo with bits and pieces of Dog Beating Stick can beat Huo Du, but his years of training in Ancient Tomb sect leads to defeat immediately. Granted, Huang Rong has a similar experience with Li Mochou in that she can beat her easily with it but is only on par when using her Peach Blossom kungfu, so perhaps Dog Beating Stick is just *that* good.

The general feel I get for Ancient Tomb martial arts is that it's based on lightness skills, crafty techniques, and perhaps has a slight illusion-like effect when it's used, but I never thought it to be superior even if Lin Chaoying was able to use it to great effect.
Well the answer is because Ancient Tomb is not Yang Guo "signature skill"/default fighting skill not like Guo Jing or Wuji or Linghu Chong they have their "best art" from the beginning while Yang Guo he must wait until Guo Fu "cut off" his arm which lead him to train with Heavy Iron Sword and later developed Sad Palm..

Gwok Jing and Ling Wu Chung also had their "start-up" martial arts for quite a while before graduating to better stuff. Gwok Jing was relying on Gong Nam 7 Freaks martial arts and a little bit of crash-course Cheun Jen Sect inner power for some time before learning the Hong Lung 18 Palms, which took him a while to master. He had to also work towards mastery of the 9 Yum Jen Ging over a longer period of time. Ling Wu Chung was stuck with Mt. Hua martial arts for a while before learning Dook Goo 9 Swords, and didn't get another boost until the end when he learned Yik Gun Ging.

Guo Jing first learn 18 Dragon Palm in the 11 chapter if i not wrong while Yang Guo he first learn HIS in chapter 27 almost which mean he didn't have his "default fighting skills" until almost 3/4 part of the story also i never said about "profiency" of Guo Jing or Linghu Chong with their skills but mostly about their "signature skills" no matter how shallow your skills at that time at least you have it..
