Why didn't Cheng Kun use Shaolin kung fu vs blind Xie Xun?

One thing that surprised me when I read HSDS was that blind Xie Xun was holding his own against Cheng Kun in broad daylight. The narrator's explanation was that, being his student, Xie Xun knew all of Cheng Kun's techniques, therefore he could defend against them even though he was blind.

However, Cheng Kun was a student of Shaolin for many years, so why didn't he use any one of the 72 supreme arts against Xie Xun? Surely a blind Xie Xun would not be able to tell apart all the variations of a Shaolin Supreme skill that he never studied. Cheng Kun was taught Shaolin's version of 9 yang from his teacher. Cheng Kun also had years to learn other shaolin skills, so why didn't he use any of them?

Another thing, it seems that Cheng Kun's martial arts philosophy is a lot like Yu Buqun and most of the fighters in Smiling Proud Wanderer. He uses his moves exactly as he practiced them, without trying to modify them slightly to accommodate the needs of the moment. In other words, Cheng Kun was not a formless kind of fighter.

This makes a lot of sense. During his time posing as a monk, maybe Cheng Kun was banking entirely on his Hua Yin Finger, and used the rest of his time to work his web of intrigue. It's impressive how a single man can gather so much info and put so many factions at each other's throat. It must have taken years of dedicated planning to accomplish this, which could explain why Cheng Kun wasn't that proficient with Shaolin moves.
