‘More than 90 Percent’ of Hong Kong Citizens Long to Return to British Rule

According to a story in the South China Morning Post, more than 90 percent of Hong Kong citizens polled in a recent survey said that they wanted the region to return to British rule, stating that they fear much of what makes the region great will eventually be lost.
A British colony for 157 years, control of Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997, making it the country’s first Special Administrative Region. It would seem, however, that many of its residents are far from happy, and wish to return to the days where the region operated independently of the People’s Republic of China.
In a survey conducted on its website on 12 March, the South China Morning Post asked whether, given the choice, Hong Kong residents would vote to return to being a British territory.

Concerns over food standards and the control that the Chinese government has over the freedom of information were cited as reasons for not wanting to be a part of mainland China, with some voicing concerns that were Hong Kong to continue on its current course, “[this freedom] will eventually be snatched away by the Chinese government, and we will end up like every other district in the mainland.”
The debate is thought to have been sparked after 98 percent of residents on the Falkland islands, a small archipelago situated off the coast of Argentina, voted in a recent referendum to remain under British control rather than fall under Argentinian rule.

Who care what they think. They will never able to separate from China.

I wonder how many people were in that survey.

Heard a few weeks ago that some mainlanders were buying up all of the baby formula in HK during New Years -presumably to resell with a hefty markup. This of course caused a lot of stress for parents in HK who all of a sudden found themselves unable to find baby formula to feed their infants... nothing quite like the threat of starving infants to galvanize people.

I'd imagine a survey conducted in such close proximity to this event would be highly skewed... but who knows.

Do you have any evidence to back this up? Are you saying mainlanders are capable of using such dirty tactic against fellow Hongkongers ?

There is nothing wrong with the situation. Mainland parents want healthy products for their children. Who wouldn't? Shame on the Hong Kong people for turning to Obama for help. They are citizens of China not citizens of the United States. If they need help they should turn to Beijing, not Washington D.C.

Not surprising to see the results. HKers hate Mainlanders. Everyone knows that.

And this right here pretty much sums up the elitist Hongdong mentality.

Of course they want to go back to being British dogs. Betraying their own ancestry and bringing shame to the ancestors is what they've always done best.

Maybe they should realize that they are seven million in number, exist at the very bottom of China (both geographically as well as figuratively), and probably shouldn't push their luck as 1.4 billion mainlanders probably wouldn't have too hard a time if they one day woke up and figured out that HK is utterly obsolete and the CCP decides to throw them all into the f*cking Pacific instead of continuing to deal with their incessant bullsh*t.

For better or worse, the Brits essentially built modern Hong Kong. It's not as if the PRC built it up during the 20th Century.

I wouldn't mind the Brits returning to HK too (not that it could ever happen); maybe then, HK could make some movies and TV shows with balls again.

Hong Kongers are in many ways more Chinese than mainlanders. Mao destroyed ancient Chinese culture and mainlanders are only beginning to learn their old ways, many of which are probably completely lost.

One thing I never quite understood about PRC propaganda is how bad it is to follow Western ideas and in this thread, Hong Kongers are dogs for wanting to follow the British; all of that is wrong. But, hey, it's a-okay to follow a German dude named Karl Marx.
