Default Martial arts systems that "play well" together, and ones that don't.

In wuxia fiction, some martial arts systems play well together and end up having a synergistic effect, while others are entirely incompatible and CANNOT be used together safely, let alone effectively.

    Examples:

9 Yum Jen Ging plays well with Cheun Jen Sect martial arts.

9 Yum Jen Ging plays well with Hong Lung 18 Palms.

Left/Right Hand Technique plays well with Cheun Jen Sect and Ancient Tomb Sect sword styles.

    HOWEVER...

9 Yum Jen Ging *supposedly* does not play well with 9 Yeung Jen Ging (not that anyone has ever tried it; that's just Cheung Mo Gei's theory).

9 Yum Jen Ging supposedly does not play well with Iron Palm Technique (in LOCH '82, it was the reason that Gwok Jing could not heal Wong Yung's Iron Palm injury with 9 Yum-healing techniques, though I believe this was not mentioned in the novel).

Any other examples you can think of martial arts systems that play well or do NOT play well together?

Left/right Hand technique didn't really have any particular affinity with Quanzhen and Ancient Tomb Sect Sword Styles, it just allowed its user ambidexterity in order to use any two synergistic skills together, resulting in one person being able to replicate a two-man formation. It would have worked equally well with, say, Golden Sun Saber and Snow Mountain Sword. Quanzhen and Ancient Tomb sword arts were synergistic, though, although in their case (and same with Golden Sun and Snow Mountain) they were designed that way, so they didn't quite just *happen* to be synergistic.

Martial Arts are also usually classified under internal arts and external arts, and many combinations of internal and external (such as 9 Yin and Dragon Palms) would normally work. Linghu Chong's Dugu 9 Swords became much more lethal once he learned Yijinjing, but that was because he finally had a reliable internal art to call upon to reinforce his external art, not so much because they were especially compatible. In internal/external combos finding arts which do not work well together would probably be more interesting.

Guo Jing didn't know 9YZJ when he first started learning HL18Z. He was using QZ internal arts. Hong Qi recognized it. It gave GJ a good foundation to learn HL18Z but it wasn't more compatible than normal to HL18Z. Any good internal art would do, I think.

9yangshengong, 9yinzhenjing and yiyinji and xiaoyaipai inner power shengong would suit any martial arts style. Refering to dgsd as example, martial arts is divided into body and usage. Body is cultivating internal strenght, usage is skill to use internal strenght. Any first class inner power skill can be used with any martial art. But different martial arts style have different usage styles. Conflicting styles will result in selfharm. Gj could use kongming fist and dragon palms together because he used the same inner power type for both and dual hands method to split his energy. Xys and mrb practised too many conflicting styles and suffered fire deviation.

Each of the Shaolin 72 Consummate Arts have their own internal power cultivation techniques.

This is stupid, but I've always wondered what would happen if someone actually mastered the 6MSJ or the 1YJ with the DG9J or some other powerful swordplay. Imagine how much easier it will be for Linghu Chong to break another person's technique when he's firing lasers from his sword while swinging it! Pew, pew!

It would pretty much be like the scene where he dueled with the two Wudang disciples where he only had to stare at their weak points and they were forced to jump around dodging while he just stood there without even having to attack.

Why did ZWJ think that 9yin wouldn't play well with 9 yang?
