So when GJ went to meet GK, Qingzhou has not fallen to the Mongols?
No, very sure at the time Genghis died in late 1220s, Qingzhou/Yidu was still south of the Mongolian line. Maybe Athena has the actual date Qingzhou surrendered.

In fact, if 2nd edition LOCH had Mongols attacking Xiangyang at LOCH times, that would be historically inaccurate.

In history Li Quan surrendered and offered Qingzhou to the Mongolian empire in 1227 (AD).

In the novel, both Guo Jing and Huang Rong suspected that Li Quan would do this, but could not prevent it.
So huge, so hopeless, to conceive
    As these that twice befell
Parting is all we know of heaven
And all we need of hell.

So, the timeline is something like this?
    1. GK passed away
    2. GJ and HR went to defend Qingzhou
    3. Mongols attacked by Xiangyang way. GJ and HR moved to defend Xiangyang
    4. Governor offered Qingzhou to the Mongols.

(For whatever reason, Mongols did not continue to attack Hangzhou from Qingzhou)

Are you talking about real life timeline or 3rd edition LOCH timeline? And to be a pedant, Hangzhou was called Linan in LOCH and ROCH (Li Ping refers to it as such).

Time-line based on LOCH 3rd ed and ROCH. There is no GJ and HR in real life, right?

    Fair point.

    1. Hua Zheng gives word to Guo Jing that Tolui is going to attack Qingzhou.
    2. Guo Jing and Huang Rong go to Qingzhou and take over the defences.
    3. Tolui arrives, but is scared off by Guo Jing and Huang Rong's fake ambush.
    4. Guo Jing and Huang Rong go to assassinate Tolui, but overhear news of Genghis Khan's illness and his desire to see Tolui and Guo Jing again.
    5. Tolui, Guo Jing and Huang Rong go to Mongolia. Guo Jing has conversation with Genghis Khan about nature of heroism. Genghis Khan dies.

Going by Athena's explanation, I assume that Li Quan surrenders Qingzhou as soon as Guo Jing and Huang Rong have left with Tolui and are no longer around to twist his arm.

Thanks, pannonian. Can I ask about (1)? When did HZ tell GJ about Tolui's plan?

It was shortly after the Huashan contest, after Hong Qigong had left. I can't remember how Hua Zheng got word to Guo Jing, but she apologised for telling her father about the Guos' plan to leave, holding herself responsible for Li Ping's death and exiling herself to the west with one of her brothers. The intelligence about Tolui closing on Qingzhou (Xiangyang in the version I read) was her way of making amends. Huang Yaoshi advised Guo Jing and Huang Rong to hurry to the city, which they reached ahead of Tolui and without any Mongols in sight.

Is the revision truly so shocking? It was an adjustment to bring the story a bit more in line with history, but otherwise, the essence is the same.
