Default Who was the more despicable hypocrite: Ngok But Kwun (SPW) or Lung Siu Wan (SSRS)?

When it comes to hypocritical faux gentlemen in wuxia, two candidates stand out: Mt. Hua Sect Leader Ngok But Kwun of Jin Yong's THE SMILING PROUD WANDERER and Lung Siu Wan of Gu Long's SENTIMENTAL SWORDSMAN, RUTHLESS SWORD. Both were treacherous scum who put on the airs of heroic and noble wulin gentlemen, but were actually self-serving bastards who betrayed those closest to them. Which one do you deem to be worse?

Well, his son kind of did it for him. I don't remember Lung Siu Wan (the elder) doing anything particularly redemptive, but his son proved more honorable than expected.

His son is arguably worse than him. His son rapes Lam Sin Yee and attempts to kill him. His son is a piece of trash. Lung Siu Wan is not that much better either. He kills his only son and frames it on Li Chum Goon. Both the father and son are trash. In some ways, Lung Siu Wan is worse than Ngok But Kwun.

I don't remember Lung Siu Wan (the younger) raping Lam Sin Yee. He only seemed to have a singleminded interest in currying favor with Seung Gwoon Gum Hung to enhance his father's standing in wulin and getting revenge on Lee Chum Foon for injuring him and crippling his ability to use martial arts. Nothing else seemed relevant to Lung the Younger and in fact, he was one of the few men (perhaps because he was really still just a kid) in SSRS who showed no interest in Lam Sin Yee.

He is evidently basing it on the TVB's Romantic Swordsman 1995, which flies off the rails compared to the original story almost from the start. The 'final boss' of this version was LSY/LXE, who twists Ah Fei's arm off (I think he died?)...

I'm glad I missed that one. I vaguely remember something about Egyptian pyramids?
