Default Perhaps Yue Buqun was better than we thought...

    1. Always had the feeling that even pre BXJF, he wasn't that much weaker than ZLC. Given his sneaky nature, it was very likely he was hiding his true abilities.

    2. He used needles. There's only one other person who used needles....DFBB. Could it be that YBQ could actually had figured out that the greatness of KHBD/BXJF lies in the essence of speed? And needles are actually more useful than swords in this scenario? Yes, he did repeat those stances, but perhaps he thought the essence of BXJF lies in speed and stances? Given a little bit more time, YBQ might be able to figure out. YBQ was after all, from the Qi faction, and thus, not as talented when it came to swordplay?

    3. We often cite that his internal is lower than Bujie Monk, since the monk could suppress the 6 Fairies' streams. However, the monk suppressed. If I recall right, YBQ could dissipate (much harder imo) the streams with his Zixia Shengong, but that would leave him exhausted and vulnerable. He could heal LHC, he chose not to.

    4. Somehow, JY likes to rate inner energy cultivation skills that has healing properties highly. For instance, 9yin, 9yang and YJJ all turned ordinary fighters into top notch fighters. I'm not saying ZXSG is at that level, but it is interesting to note that ZXSG seem to have healing properties as well (which was why LHC was given ZXSG to learn when he first got injured).

I don't think that it's all that likely. Yue Buqun ran up against a lot of obstacles that he had trouble handling early in the book. The whole Yellow River trip was a series of humiliations to him, and if he could have done better at that point, he would have. Yue Buqun also didn't make the list of the people Ren Woxing didn't admire so that's a knock against him in comparison to Zuo Lengchan.

The needles are a hidden weapon specifically designed to Zuo Lengchan. In that fight, Yue Buqun not only had to win but he had to eliminate Zuo Lengchan as a threat without killing him. It's an innovative move for sure, but it was born out of necessity rather than anything specifically to do with Bixie. He did sort of the same thing when he killed the Hengshan nuns except that in that case he was trying to deceive people as to who the killer was. Moreover, Dongfang Bubai didn't use a needle for any particular reason - it was just what he had on hand. Also, it should be noted that Lin Zhennan used a sword rather than a needle.

Remember that the reason why Yue Buqun repeatedly used the Bixie moves was beacuse his opponent was Linghu Chong. Specifically, it's the only sword skill he knew other than Huashan martial arts. Linghu Chong not only knew every move that he knew, but he also knew the counters that the Sun Moon Cult elders developed. Against anyone else, Yue Buqun would have just stuck to Huashan sword skills.

I would say that Yue Buqun's skills are fairly well explained in the book so there isn't going to be much misunderstanding here. The one character in the book who probably is underestimated would probably be Zuo Lengchan, and that's largely because he only had one good showing in the whole book.

It's clear that needle attacks are moves from Kuihua/Bixie.
There were three practictioners of Kuihua/Bixie in the novel:
Donfang Bubai, Yue Buqun, and Lin Pingzhi.

All three used the same weapon (needle) with the same modus operandi (blinding their opponent with the needle).

With all of their knowledge, Ren Woxing, Xiang Wentian, Linghu Chong, and Ren Yingying couldn't figure out anyone else who used needles consistent with how the Hengshan Shitai were murdered.

From the above points, no one else in Wulin used needles this way.
All three practictions of Kuihua/Bixie used needles.
All three practictions of Kuihua/Bixie used needles to blind their opponents.
When the three practitioners used those moves, Linghu Chong identified the technique as the same.

    A) When Yue Buqun used needles against Zuo Lengchan, he used the same weapon and the same move that Dongfang Bubai used:
"The move his master used at that moment was the same martial art that Dongfang Bubai had used with the embroidering needle when fighting against the four of them. He was so astonished that he forgot about his injury and stood up. "

"Only Linghu Chong and Yingying were not surprised by this. After Yue Buqun had lost his long sword, the technique he used afterwards was very similar to the one Dongfang Bubai used."

"As expected, not long after, both of Zuo Lengchan's eyes were blinded by a needle."
    Chapter 34

    B)
Linghu Chong realizes that only a practitioner of Kuihua/Bixie could kill the Shitai with needles, and that it must have been Yue Buqun since no one else used needles.

"Later, after he had come out from Shaolin Temple, Yingying told him she opened their gowns and checked on their injuries. She saw two little holes on the skin above their hearts. It looked as if someone had used needles to pierce their hearts. At that time, he had jumped up and said: 'Poison needle? Who uses poison needles in Wulin?' and Yingying had replied: 'Daddy and Uncle Xiang's experiences are vast, but they also don't know. Daddy said that it wasn't a poisoned needle. It's actually a sharp weapon aimed at a fatal point that killed them. But the needle piercing Dingxian Shi Tai was slightly slanted.'"
    ...
"Both of Linghu Chong's hands were pressed on the wall and he couldn't help shivering. He thought, "The master who is capable of killing the two Shi Tai by using a small piece of needle must either be using the Sunflower Manual or the Evil Resisting Sword Art. Dongfang Bubai had always been on top of the Dark Wood Cliff embroidering, so he couldn't be the one killing people in Shaolin Temple. Also, looking at his martial art, his needle couldn't have missed when he tried to kill Dingxian Shi Tai. Zuo Lengchan had learned the fake Evil Resisting Sword Art. At that time, martial brother Lin had only gotten the sword manual so he couldn't have learned it completely; perhaps he might not even have gotten the manual at that time..." He thought back to the snow field when he met with Lin Pingzhi and Yue Lingshan and he thought, "That's right, at that time, Lin Pingzhi's voice hasn't changed yet. It doesn't matter if he had gotten the manual or not because he couldn't have completed his learning of the Evil Resisting Sword Art then" As he thought till here, sweat started to come out from his forehead." ... "There was only Yue Buqun who could've done it."
    Chapter 37

    C)
Lin Pingzhi used the same move to blind Mu Gaofeng's horse.

"Masters like Linghu Chong, Yingying, and Yu Canghai saw clearly how Lin Pingzhi had extended his hand to stab twice and done something to the horse. Sure enough, after a few steps, Mu Gaofeng's horse suddenly ran into a pillar of the grass shed. The force with which the horse ran into the pillar was enormous and it brought half of the grass shed down. Yu Canghai leapt outside of the shed while the grass and hay fell on top of Linghu Chong, Lin Pingzhi, and other people’s heads. Zheng E extended her hand to remove the grass on Linghu Chong’s head. But Lin Pingzhi just kept on staring at Mu Gaofeng and was oblivious to anything else. Mu Gaofeng hesitated, dismounted the horse, and released the rein. That horse rushed forward a few steps and ran into a big tree. With a long neigh, it fell down on the ground with a bloody head. This horse’s movement was really strange and it became obvious both of its eyes were blinded because Lin Pingzhi had stabbed them with his unbelievably quick hand technique."
    Chapter 35

Jin Yong makes a point to associate the needle attacks with all three practitioners, and with Kuihua/Bixie.
The distinctive move-set is how Linghu Chong figured out that Yue Buqun and Lin Pingzhi had stolen Bixie.
The distinctive weapon use is also how Linghu Chong figured out that Yue Buqun killed the Shitai.
Otherwise why did Jin Yong put in all these passages? Is it just a huge coincidence that all three and only the three people who are shown using Kuihua/Bixie are also shown using needles?
