Though Chi Yan was mortally wounded, he did manage to drive the Golden Wheel Monk away from the city. It was a satisfyingly redemptive ending for the character: a guy who once viciously murdered a baby became a man who sacrificed his life to save an entire city. Even though it's not novel canon, it's a great ending for him.
