Default Repent And Become Monk / Nun

Was it a standard practice in the wuxia world that people become monks or nuns after realizing that they had done something really bad?

For the exception of Cheng Kun, Xie Xun from HSDS became a monk after killing loads of people to repent

Xiao Yuanshan and Murong Bo became monks after realizing that what they did was wrong.

Princess Changping became a nun after the fall of Ming Dynasty

Li Mochou became a nun after her husband left her

It was an age of faith, in Asia as well as Europe. During that time that we call medieval today, religion held sway over people's lives to an extent that modern people struggle to comprehend.

As Ken said, it was an age of faith during that period of time.

However, not all nuns and monks are as benevolent. Cheng Kun, Li Mochou and Meijue were the few bad eggs that spoilt the basket. So I would not say that becoming a nun or monk is a way to repent one's crimes.

Yeah. As in medieval Europe at around the same time, the clergy was often a means of acquiring great social power.

In general, if you did something really really naughty and you have many people wanting to kill you. It might be a good idea (if you cant stand living alone on some Fire Ice island) to become a monk.

Either Shaolin protects you and/or the vengeful guy looks bad picking on a monk.

Look! He killed Senior Zhou even though the senior had repented and become a monk! I bet he kicks puppies too!

I am sure you can easily imagine, if Cheng Kun wasn't still stirring up crap with Shaolin/Ming Sect and was just chilling at Shaolin, he might have received protection from Xie Xun from Shaolin even after he got his identity exposed. Even ZWJ might have tried to dissuade XX.

Yeah, Ying Gu was like REALLY pissed when she learned that BOTH Yi Deng and QQR had become monks. She was like "So you can do some nasty shit, become a monk and be forgiven? No wonder there are so many monks in this world!!"

The clergy was THE place to hide after one has pulled some shady crap.

That said, I think we can believe in the sincerity of both 1 Deng's and Chi Yan's repentance. At the same time, however, both were guilty of some shady crap in their pre-clergy days.
