When people think of the "hero" in LEGEND OF THE CONDOR HEROES, the first person they usually think of is Gwok Jing.
But there is one hero in LOCH who is overlooked. Gwok Jing's mother: Lee Ping.
Lee Ping was the one person who, more than anyone else, gave Gwok Jing his moral bearings...which would define and drive his entire life. At a critical moment in her son's life, Lee Ping made the ultimate sacrifice...took her own life to free her son's hands to embrace his destiny...battling the Mongols to defend the Han race.
Gwok Jing was incorruptible. Genghis Khan could not compel Gwok Jing to do his bidding and attack the Sung Dynasty with threats of torture or execution or promises of rewards. The only thing that could deter Gwok Jing was to play on his sense of filial loyalty towards his mother. Lee Ping understood this, and took her own life so that the Khan could not force her son to betray his morals and serve him. Lee Ping was a simple peasant woman, but she was as heroic as any of those who wielded swords on the battlefield.
