At the risk of being pwned by Laviathan again, I posit this:

If Xiao Feng's suicide had not made the Liao Emperor think (or rethink) and changed nothing, would it still have been heroic? Or merely tragic?

    Conversely,

If Murong Fu had succeded, would he still have been a tragedy? Or would he have become a hero to his people?

If you're asking about his parents, we know that his father was Mo Yung Bok. No word on who his mother might have been.

If you're asking about the nation he was fighting for, the Yin Kingdom existed in the Five Dynasties period (I think). We might need to consult some of our historical authorities for more info on that one.

It's the intention that counts. If Xiao Feng failed to stop the war, it would have been a failed heroic attempt, but heroic nevertheless. Whereas no matter MRF succeeds or not in restoring his dynasty, it can only be considered self-interest (or interest in HIS people, but not all people).

The difference in the motives: If both succeeded, MRF would become a hero to his people like you said, but Xiao Feng would become a hero to ALL people.

(in other words, XF has surpassed the stage of nationality; what he did is overcome nationality without nationality, but we won't go there )

    Talking

Xu Zhu being taught since childhood that he should not crave fame, women, fortune, but ended up the power and finance of Ling Ju Palace and a beautiful wealthy princess for a wife.

Madame Ma thought she was the most beautiful women in the world but died wih a scratched ugly face. Another irony could be that she was very beautiful outside, but she was super ugly on the inside.

Xiao Feng promised to leave China with Ah Zhu, but instead left with a Ah Zi.

The Murong Yan Empires existed during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.

For Murong Fu: the Xianbei have totally merged within the Han Chinese, so he did not have a people to fight for. The ones who wanted to restore the Yan were the Murongs themselves only. But in the end, Murong Fu was merely driven by his own ambition of becoming emperor, while Murong Bo sincerely wanted to restore the old dynasty.

In the novel this isn't precisely so. She showed her face to DY because one of the Evils (3rd or 4th) wanted to see her face (and she couldn't avoid that because of her lesser Kungfu), since she had promised to marry the first man who saw her face, she thought DY would be a better 'choice' compared to the Evils. After that, she thinks she must marry DY, this is quite a very strange and dominant girl, DY has nothing to decide

    - YTZ give his eyes to AhZhe to show his depest love, but in the end they both blind and died, and AhZhi choose XF.

    - AhZhi want to see again so much but she make herself blind again so she has no debt to YTZ

    The list of ironies continues...

Bai Shijing is the punishment-executing elder of the Beggar Clan whose job is to ensures justice. Yet behind everyone's back, he was doing dirty deeds, killing a fellow senior and framing the Murong family. In the end, it was he who got executed for injustice.

Sweeper monk the character is an irony in itself.

Powerful character doing a 'menial' task.

Xiao Feng was undefeated in battle, so it made sense that the only person who could end his life...was himself...
