I think overall (in China anyways), the title of the most popular novel comes down to a toss up between LoCH and RoCH. I think LoCH is a little bit more popular in that it was smuggled into the country under different names and a ghostwriter back in the day and RoCH wasn't. But then again there are more RoCH adaptations. It's hard to call really. Besides, they are essentially one long running story.

Apparently the sales of HSDS are consistently the best according to the blurb at the end of one of the eps of the CCTV adaption.

From what I have seen, either Smiling Proud Wanderer or LOCH would be the MOST popular in the world. Duke of Mount Deer is probably next IMO.

Most JY fans started with the LOCH novel. So I would say LOCH.
It's not an official answer as I am not aware of any official survey being done, but anecdotally, LOCH would be the one.This account is retired.

I actually started with ROCH before LOCH and DGSD, but I like LOCH and DGSD much better than ROCH.

Some dippy suggested earlier that SPW is the most popular. I doubt it.
