A little bit of background...

As was recorded in the Jin Scripts, the Old Man Linghu saw himself in a dream walking on an iced lake when suddenly the ice cracked open and he saw a person under the ice, then he woke with fear. The dream readers said "The Yang is above the ice and the Yin is below the ice", the marriage of a man and a woman is the coupling of "Yin and Yang"; the dream readers predicted that Linghu Chak will become the matchmaker for other people and when the ice breaks, this will be the day he succeeds and thus the phrase "Ice Person" was reached.


The emperors throughout the ages strived to increase their population and the post of "Ice Person" was incorporated into the official ranking and given the role of co-ordinating the marriage plans of the nation, so in addition to the private matchmakers, there were also official matchmakers. Up to the Tang dynasty, these rules had matured and three years into the reign of Tang Gaozhong Yonghui, a document was written that became the earliest legislation ruling marriage.


In the reign of Tang Xianzhong, Chuen Ka Fook was the son of a rich family, but his mother was incorrectly paired with his father and this led to the fall of his family luck, not only losing all their riches but also their ancestral land and business, causing Fook's mother to die with regret. However, his father's debts were to be paid by the son and Fook was sold onto the Lian family, in a moment of anger, he took his uncle's son Ping On and ran away. To make his living, he became a private matchmaker and on the surface it would appear he would do anything to achieve his goals and make his fees and making unevenly matched marriages, but in fact he was using his mother as an example and does not want to have an incorrectly paired marriage, looking at whether the couples were truly in love with each other, even if their families objected. This brought him a bad name and he is continually running away from those unhappy with him.

Linghu Chak had a strange dream and then became the first in a line of "Official Matchmakers". His descendant Linghu Shun has a wife Wai Leung but she has only managed to bear him three daughters and is worried they have no sons to continue the family line, so they take on a mistress Wan Leung to try and bear a son, but things don't go their way. To comfort the illness-ridden Shun, Wai tricks him by saying that Wan has borne him a son and Shun names him Hei and dies a happy man. From this time onwards, Linghu Hei is brought up as son by Wai and as an adult takes on the role of Official Matchmaker and even Wan is tricked about this.

Rich merchant Lam Cheung Ling is seeking a husband for his daughter Chui Ching and sends Hei to gather some matchmakers together to find a suitable pairing. Attracted by the fee of 10,000 taels, much competition arises; "Golden Fan" Lin Pak Hap meets a man who calls himself "The Greatest Golden Fan in Jiangling" Tang Foon and the two will not let go. Foon needs to repay his betting dues and vows to win the fees. Just as Hap is troubling over who to select as a candidate, Go Fei arrives with a jade piece showing the word "San" and asks Hap's father Lin Yung to help him find someone. Hap sees him talented in both literature and martial arts and hatches a plan. Ching lets out a kite from the Red Goddess temple to find those in her destiny and the matchmakers find ways for their clients to get the kite. When Hei and Fei both leap to the top of the tree to get the kite, Fei rescues Hei and leaves her with a good impression. Foon finds out that Fei was once the amazing constable and puts on an act to trick him into believing that Ching is the mysterious lady he is seeking and offers his services as a matchmaker. Hap and Foon fight over who will represent Fei, but he finds this tiresome and approaches Hei to be his matchmaker, surprising everyone.

Everyone places strong bets onto Foon, but when the find out that Fei has asked Hei to be his matchmaker, they immediately go to seek vengeance on Foon and his creditor also comes looking for him, Foon can only run away in disguise with his uncle Ping On. In order to prevent Fei from being hassled, Hei invites him to stay at her home and her three brother-in-laws put large bets on him to win and look after him well. Hap is troubled about finding a suitable candidate to enter the contest and hearing some criticisms from Hei about private matchmakers, she retaliates angrily just as Hei is passing and using a slight of the tongue, she sends Hap back into her own trap, admitting she must find anybody to present to the Lam family, Hap is furious. Foon and On use a fake painting to swindle some money, but is discovered and uncovered by Hap, the two argue once again. Foon accidentally rescues Ching who wants to hang herself and Hap finds out his real name is Tang Chung Man and that Ching is attracted to him, so she has an idea.

Loan shark Wing forces Foon to sell himself in exchange for the money he owes, Foon finds out he must become a eunuch and is petrified, at this time Hap appears and buys his contract and wants him to enter the contest with her as his matchmaker, Foon can only accept this. Ching sends her servant to give Foon the test subjects for the contest and Hap is overjoyed. Before the contest, Fei is ambushed, so Hei has a plan to find the attacker. Fei wins the first round with his skill, but Foon loses the first two rounds. In the third round, Foon thinks that Cheung Ling will be testing him on Li Bai, but Ling changes the subject unexpectedly and Foon is caught unaware.

Ling uses Kam Cheung Wai's only poem as the question and everyone is baffled, but Fei answers with ease, winning another round. In the fourth round, Ling wants to test their intelligence, asking them to find a jade pendant from the clues on a picture, Hap teaches Foon (Fook) to follow Fei, Fook uses a sneaky plan to take the jade, finally winning a round. The fifth round is about playing Mah Jong, Master Shum is cheating meaning that Fook has no chance of winning so he decides to let Fei win, earning the respect of Ling, who lets him win another round, putting him equal with Fei.

The final deciding round is down to Ching to select herself, Fook recites her a poem that doesn't rhyme and Hap is frowning. As Fei recites his poem, he brings out the Jade pendant with "San" etched in it, Ching tells him that she is not his true love and when Fei realises he has been misled, he turns and leaves, making Fook the winner. Hap sees that Fook is nervous and pushes for Hei to hurry and permit this wedding, but her words give her away and she later finds out that On has a photographic memory, becoming suspicious of their true identities.

On the day of the engagement, Hap arrives at the Lam family, saying that Fook's origins are faked and insists that he withdraws, Fook refuses when suddenly Ching's lover Lau Sai Kwong appears and says he is willing to marry Ching, Fook agrees to pull out on the condition that he uses them both as his matchmakers, Ling can only agree to this. Hap thinks about it all and believes that something is wrong, finding Fook to find out, finally realising this is all a plot and she hates him even more. Fei wants to leave Changan to go in search of his true love, Hei sends him off unwillingly when Fei hears the sound of the bells of his true love, but he cannot find her, but it makes him stay. On is pushed by San Sheung Sheung who is a servant from the Yung family and he breaks the wedding present that Master Yung is offering to the princess for her wedding present, so Fook has no choice but to buy another piece of fragrant wood from Hap who asks him for a price of ten thousand taels.

Fook mentions "unable to marry" and earns himself a slap from Hap, knocking his neck out of place, he realises this is her weak point. Fei decides to stay in Changan and offers his services as investigator to the official matchmaker, Hei's brother in law Ching Tak thinks he is after his livelihood and is unhappy, but Hei understands that all he wants to do is to find the woman in his heart. Fook sets up a stall outside Hap's shop to steal her business and changes his title to the Golden Bird Bridge, annoying Hap very much. Sheung feels bad for making Fook and On lose money and takes them for a meal as an apology, the two find her appetite is enormous and realise that this is the reason for her great strength.

The local official Wat Yan is using his power to force Hei to offer his daughter Bo Yu's hand to the Man family, Hei refuses saying that the Yung family had applied first, causing the wrath of Yan. Wan and the others are actively trying to select a wife for Hei, Wai is worried that Hei's identity may be revealed and does her best to criticise the girls. Fei uses his position to look for his true love but is unsuccessful, but with the phrase "unbelievable strength", he finds Sheung, who has long forgotten him, Fei is distraught. Fei decides to wait for Sheung, making Hei feel awkward. Sheung suddenly asks Fook to be matchmaker for her lady Yuk Lan, but her partner is a parrot.

Lan says that the parrot is a reincarnation of her past life's lover, so for the sake of the fee, Fook agrees to look for her "Parrot Lover". Fook uses a plan to make Lan tell the truth and it turns out that Lan and a poor scholar Tong Man Sang are deeply in love, but Sang has gone to the capital to take part in examinations and her father wants to marry her to the Man family, so she can only use this plan to avoid it. Fook uses a plan to make Master Yung pull out of the marriage proposal. Sang passes the examination and becomes an official, he acts on Lan's behalf to go and propose at the Tong family but is shocked to find that Hap is already there representing the Wat family.

Fook uses all his reams of words to convince Master Tong to allow Sang and Lan to be together, but with Sang's new position and the fear of upsetting Official Wat, he sends Fook away and Hap is rather happy at this. Fook seeks advantage from Hap, but falls for her plan and is strung up in the forest. Hap goes to the Wat family to agree the proposal and sees Yu is very arrogant, instructing Hap to go and prepare the Tong family home for her arrival, so that her new family will do as she says, Hap's heart drops. San and Lan ask Fook for help, Fook suggests that they elope and arranges a boat for them.

Fook waits for Sang and Lan at the pier but sees Hap arriving and from Sheung's message, he finds out the two intend to commit suicide together and is horrified. Hap is finally touched by their true love and decides to work together with Fook to make Yu pull out. Hap knows that Yu is very superstitious and comes up with a plan. Yu is scared to death by the "Parrot Lover" and Wat Yan instructs Hei to investigate this matter. Tak goes to the Yung family home to investigate, but luckily Fei takes a part in scaring him away, Fook knows that Sheung is the lady in Fei's heart. Yu asks a priest to help get rid of the evil spirits, Fook tells Sheung to ask Fei for help. Wat Yan finds that Yu suddenly disappears and is very scared, finally under the instruction of Hap, he goes to the forest where the "Parrot Lover" appeared to find Yu and she is frightened into withdrawing from the marriage.

Hei scolds Fei for being unprofessional for the sake of Sheung, but he has no regrets. Wai finds out that Hei and Fei have been sailing on the lake and drinking all night together and is uncomfortable. Fook and Hap are fighting over business, Fook is awoken by Hei's words of "Join and make double profits" and suggests that he should go into partnership with Hap. At thi time Hap's father Lin Yung returns and upon seeing Fook, he becomes very angry and points out that he was the heartless man who had run away from Hap's marriage six years ago, when she hears this, Hap and her family surround Fook to beat him as he tries to defend himself.

In the angry struggle, Fook and Hap are both injured and they go to the magistrates to ask Hei to settle their dispute. Lin Yung accuses Fook of swindling their money and running away, Fook returns the charge saying that he was tricked and forced into the marriage by Lin Yung, the two each have their opinions and Hei says that if they don't complete the wedding, then he should write a divorce paper to settle it but then they argue about who should be issuing the divorce paper, Hei quotes Tang laws that state that Fook should write the divorce paper. Ling Yung gives money to Fook, to hurry him into writing the document making him angry.

Fook uses the title "son-in-law to be" to enter the Lin family, but in reality he is threatening Hap with the divorce paper to take half of her newly opened matchmaking business, under the circumstances, Hap can only agree. Hei uses the law of "no marriage between good and bad" to stop a pair of lovers getting married, but she injures her leg, Fei massages it for her and carries her home, on the way they go to the temple to avoid the rain and Hei is very nervous. Fook and Hap are settled by Lin Yung and finally agree on how to handle things. Fei decides to take Sheung to roam the world, annoying Hei very much.

Hap wants Fook to accept the rules of the contract, entering and leaving by the back door, Fook is annoyed but On's words make him hatch a plan and successfully changes Hap's mind. Fook and another private matchmaker Yuen Tin Ba have an argument and Ba frames Fook for stealing a gold plate, luckily Fei is passing and sees through his plot. Fook suggests that Fei should use his name to buy out Sheung's contract and take her on as an apprentice at the matchmaking service, Fei is very pleased and offers all the money needed to keep Sheung. The matchmaking service opens as Fook and Hap argue over who's plaque should be raised first, Lin Yung suggests that they use a new name, Sheung sees that Fook and Hap were tripped over by a red string and laughs that their destinies are joined by a string, inspiring them both.

Hei and Fei arrive at Yat Sin Hin to greet the grand opening and Hap and Fook use the failings of the officials as a joke, causing Hei much frustration. Yuen Tin Ba uses a broken mirror as a present to create a sign of bad luck, but Fook turns this around, causing Ba to leave angrily. Hap and Fook use their "Urn of Destiny" to secretly create their matchings and have a lantern festival for the couples to meet and churn up business. On finds his sister's paining and suddenly remembers the time from when he was younger and is frightened into having a mental fit, scaring Sheung. Fook tells of their past where his own naughtiness caused his uncle On's disability and how his guilt led him to promise his mother that he would look after On. It was this accident that caused On's innocence and also his photographic memory and Sheung comforts Fook, telling him that he is happier this way.

Hei sees the Fei is looking after Sheung's expenses and is not pleased, Fei urges her to change the ways of her operation. On the day of the lantern festival, Sheung mistakenly thinks that her lantern is paired with that of Fook and chooses him as the love of her life; on the other hand, Hei picks up a lantern and finds that it matches that of Fei, scaring her into running away. After this event, Yat Sin Hin's business is booming and Hap and Fook are overjoyed. Hei decides to reform the official matchmakers and tells her three brothers in law to follow Fei's suggestions. The three are not happy.

Wat Yan asks Hei to represent Wing Hin in the proposal to the Fan family, Hei wants to regain her reputation and agrees. Hap bumps into a Wu man who knocks her over, he offers her a tigerskin as compensation, but scares her away. Fook hears that this man is here to propose marriage to the Fan family and has an idea. Hei and Hin go to the Fan family with their proposal and Master Fan tells of his concerns, saying that he had already arranged his daughter's marriage thirty years ago with his friend Yip Sai Cheung's child, but he has not heard from his friend for so long and he is afraid that he will break the promise made in the past. Hei agrees to investigate but Fook brings the Wu man Yip Chi Chau to the Fan home to propose marriage.

Chau tells them all that his father was Yip Sai Cheung and after many years apart, he was recently reunited and was told to go and complete the marriage arrangement as his father's dying wish. He produces a ring as a sign and passes it to Master Fan who verifies it and cannot refuse. Hei stops the wedding from proceeding, saying that Chau cannot marry Fan Chi Kiu because they are of different official status, Fook is speechless. Hap points out that Fook is not skilled enough in the laws of Tang and lost the opportunity against Hei, Fook asks her to help but she refuses, Fook sees the amber bangle that has been ordered by Yung and has an idea.

Hap is greedy for matchmaking fees and is tempted into helping Fook, the two use a map of the frontiers to point out to Hei that the promise between the Fan and Yip families are outside the jurisdiction of Tang law. Hei is not pleased, but Fei points out that Yat Sin Hin's preparation is complete and their point is lawful and correct. He urges her not to let prejudices between the official and private matchmakers stand in the way of her judgement, this makes her even angrier. Hei sees that Wu maiden Ka Mui is incorrectly accused of being a thief and has a stroke of inspiration, pointing out that Cheung knew that Master Fan bears a hatred of the Wu people so the contract is invalid if he married a Wu maiden and had a mixed race child, so the agreement is void.

Fook wants to change Chau into a Tang man, using poetry and calligraphy to win over Master Fan, however Fan's prejudices are too great and he is insulted by Chau's directness in defence, so the plan fails, but leaves Kiu with a good impression of Chau. Hap and Fook use the words of the emperor "Tang and Wu as one family" and win over the case. Hap asks Chau for the arrangement fee, but finds out she has been tricked by Fook. Chau passes Mui and finds her being attacked, he rescues her but is mistaken for the rapist. Hei uses the fact that Chau is a convict and refuses to authorise his marriage, frustrating Fook and the others. Fei retrieves evidence from the local constable and suspects the attacker is the local innkeeper, however the evidence is destroyed accidentally by On and Fook.

Hap scolds On for destroying the evidence and calls him stupid, later she realises she has said something wrong and goes to find him to apologise, she and Fook see him running out from his room looking tearful. Fook and Hap go to the hilltop to look for On and find him on the side of a cliff, they are worried about him, but relieved when they realise he is not suicidal. However they end up falling down the valley themselves and seeing Fook is injured, Hap offers to help him, then he helps scare a dog away and as the two play games with each other on their way back, they start to develop feelings for each other.

Fei finds a new lead and tells Sheung to go and stay at Cheung Wui's inn to trick him into committing another crime. That night, Wui strikes and Fei and Fook find that Sheung has been carried away in the night and are worried, luckily they find her and Wui in the temple and Fook rescues Sheung by accident, Chau's innocence is returned to him. Hei is under pressure from her family, but she still sees Fei as her good partner and will not send him away for helping the private matchmakers. Chau is troubled about the wedding gifts and Fook uses marketing techniques as a way of obtaining goodwill from the tradesmen in the form of silk, gold and other products. Ching Tak and the other brothers in law go to chase debts from the manager of the goldsmiths Ho and he offers them a set of fake gold, stirring up a plan in the second brother Cho Kit.

Fook and Hap go to the goldsmiths to collect the gold and then move onto the Fan family to present the dowry, but they find that the gold is fake and at this time Ching Tak and the brothers move in to investigate, Fook uses his quick thinking to turn the sitatuation around, saying that they have brought bad luck into the home and they must reschedule the ceremony, the owner of the goldsmiths immediately asks for the return of the gold. Fei and Sheung find out that the three brothers in law are plotting to bring down Yat Sin Hin but Sheung messes things up and heightens their senses as they report a skewed story to Hei and when Fei urges her to see the truth, but she feels that Fei is being used by Sheung and they fall out.

Yat Sin Hin is accused of exchanging the gold and the sponsorships are taken back by the traders, Fook and Hap don't know what to do. Hin pretends to offer his support to Chau and gives him money for use with his wedding preparations, Chau thinks that Kiu would not be able to adapt to life in the deserts and feels that he cannot provide her with happiness, deciding he will pull out, Hin is secretly pleased. Tak and the others point out that they won their business as soon as Fei left, annoying Hei. Sheung hears that Fei is setting up a challenge stand to vent his frustrations, but is unhappy he has no competition so she joins him. Fook asks Fei to join them in Yat Sin Hin as a marital investigator, but afraid that he will go against his commitment to Hei, he will only stay with them until the truth is uncovered.

Fook tells Sheung to pick up the urn outside their shop and attracts a crowd to try and rescue their reputation by giving out Chicken Rice, however the event is sabotaged by the three brothers. Hap feels humiliated and Fook tries to comfort her as they share a chicken rice, they are seen by Yung who is worried that they will get back together again. Fei follows Tak and the others to Hin's home and finds that Hin is always changing his staff, raising suspicion. Hei prepares to conduct the wedding ceremony with the Wing family and Fei arrives to suggest that Hin has violent tendencies, Hei does not believe him. On the wedding night, Kiu and Hin share a cup of wine, but she drops the cup and is horribly beaten up by Hin.

Hei represents the Fan family to go and cancel the marriage with Hin, Official Wat is there and points out that the cancellation is against the law, unless this is a grave mistake made by Hei, this causes some conflict for Hei. Hei goes to the cliff top to meet with Fei and admits that it is too late to regret things, but because of the limitations of the rules and the law, she has no choice but to send Kiu back to Hin. Hei brings back the somewhat crazy Kiu to Hin and after a display of madness, he signs the divorce documents. Fei praises Hei and they both share a drink and overcome their differences.

Hei takes her three brothers in law to apologise to Hap and Fook and points out that he will explain Yat Sin Hin's innocence to the town, Hap praises Hei for her openness. Chau hears about Kiu's news on his journey and returns to go and see her, announcing that he will look after her. Fook sees something is not right and uses a trick to see their true love for each other, Master Fan is also convinced that Chau is a good son-in-law, agreeing to their marriage. Yung sees Fook holding onto Hap's hand and angrily scolds him, forcing him to make a promise.

Hei sees the wedding papers of Chau and Kiu and realises that in the world of love and marriage ther cannot be fixed rules, she goes against normal regulations and authorises it. When Official Wat and Hin find out about this, they believe that Kiu's madness was part of a plan and are angry. When they hear that Chau will be taking Kiu back to the desert, they send the constable to take her away to the lunatic tower. Hei goes to ask Wat what is going on and he forces her to agree that she has made a mistake that she should resign for, otherwise he will force Kiu to spend her days in the asylum, Hei is held in a situation. Hei is comforted by Fei and decides to openly admit her mistake and resign her office, all the matchmakers are shocked, but Hap and Fook offer their support.

Chau reports that Kiu has been taken away by Hin and Hei, Fook and Hap go to Hin's home to argue the situation, Wat says that because Kiu is not crazy, the divorce papers are void and this angers the three. Fei investigates and finds the reason for Hin's madness and when Fook and the others see On breaking a cup, they have an idea. Finally, Hin lets go of Kiu, but because of this, Yat Sin Hin has offended Hin's uncle Prime Minister Chun. Fei and Hei talk about their ideal partners and they each have the same idea. Fei is shocked to feel that he has fallen for Hei and in his desperation, he seeks advice from Fook.

Fook tests out Fei and determines that he does not fancy men and he just has to find his right partner to get back to normal, so he suggests that Fei should teach Sheung swordplay. Tak and the brothers in law refuse to deal with their business until the new official is appointed annoying Fook and Hap a lot. On their way home, Fook is accused of stealing the comb of Gau Nai Nai but luckily local widow To Yuet Leung appears to help him out. Fook and hap see that Gau is injured and help to take them both back to a dessert store. There they find out from the owner Choi Yiu the relationship between Yuet and Gau.

Fook and Hap have feelings for each other but they cannot undo the knot of their past and have countless nightmares, they each go to the store room to try out the wedding props but they are afraid of making the same mistake and will not admit to their love. Hei sees that Sheung is learning Fei's "Inspirational Swordplay" and helps her out. Fei and Hei arrive at Yiu's shop to eat sweet soup and at the time, Yiu's half brother Choi Hing Chi arrives and lays his claims to the shop because Yiu has no right to the inheritance . Hei produces three pieces of evidence to support Gau's identity and wants the new official to make judgement, but new official matchmaker Yuen Tin Ba says that Gau was just a second wife and therefore not entitled to inheritance. Hei and Fei try very hard to find the witness Chan Shui and also the almanac of the time to prove that Gau was married after the first wife had died.

Gau and Yuet's mother in law want to bring together Yiu and Yuet, but they have to take away her vow to chastity before she can remarry. Tak and the brothers try to keep their position and play Mah Jong with Yan and let him win, but they fall into his trap. Hei would rather give up the Linghu family wealth in order to pay the debts for his brothers in law. Hei takes the "Matchmaking Family" sign with him as he leaves the family home and is mocked by the townspeople, luckily Fook, Hap and Fei arrive with a sedan chair and invite her to join them in Yat Sin Hin.

Hei joins Yat Sin Hin as a private matchmaker. Yung wants to bring her (him) together with Hap and thus tries to impress Wan and Wai, Fook cannot bear to see this and argues with Yung. Sheung finds out from On that Fei is interested in her and is shocked. She tries to tell him how she feels using a bun and Fei understands her feelings, he also realises that she is not the one for him so the two decide to become adopted brother and sister and return to Yat Sin Hin to tell everyone. Hap takes a picture of a lady to see Yiu and offer to matchmake, but Gau says that no-one is good enough for him apart from Yuet. Hap and Fook discuss the matter and want to help Yuet remove her chastity title and bring her happiness.

Hei acts out in full a scene where a hero rescues a lady to try and convince Yan to allow the removal of Yuet's title and everyone is stunned by her performance. However Yan doesn't fall into their trap but he rescues Yuet and is captured by her beauty, offering to help her remove her title. Ba is a little surprised at Yan's enthusiasm to help Yuet. She has to wait until after the winter for her title to be officiall removed by the imperial court then she can remarry again, meanwhile Fook and Hap secretly prepare their marriage arrangements. Ba hears from the doctor Luk Wui Chun of Yuet's intentions to marry Yiu and tells Yan.

Ba places evidence and then joins with the doctor to accuse Yuet of breaching her vow to chastity and petitioning to drown her and Yiu. Hap suggests that Yuet should undergo a test of her virginity to prove their innocence but she refuses and would rather commit suicide, to everyone's surprise. When Hap finds out the reason for this later, she is very regretful. Fei finds out the real reason for Chun's charity collections and is inspired by Sheung's sausage rice to think of a plan to prove Yuet's innocence. Everyone happily makes arrangements for Yuet and Yiu's wedding but Ba steps in to arrest Fook and Hap on the charge of forcing a chaste widow to marry.

Fook and Hap find out that the imperial document does not have the order to remove Yuet's title and infer that an error has occurred within the official channels, however they are revoked and removed of their matchmaker licences, while Yat Sin Hin is closed down. As everyone thinks up ways of helping Fook and Hap, Sheung wants to break them out of jail but is stopped by Fei who says the only way of helping them is by using Tang laws. Hap is not used to life in prison, but Fook helps to cheer her up. Yuet brings her chastity title documents to see if she can help they find out it was official Qin who dealt with her case at the time and believe that Qin will not help them after Wing Hin's case.

Hei finds a record of events from the last 15 years and calls for an appeal, wanting to claim that Yuet's marriage to a dead husband was void, however she fails and Fei takes a beating for her. Fook gives his arm to protect Hap from the mosquitoes and she is very touched as their love grows but they still will not overcome their pride to admit it. Fei opens another hearing and everyone from Yat Sin Hin gathers in the audience to exert some pressure. They point out from the time of her chastity, Yuet should never have qualified for her title and Yan gives in for fear of involving Qin as everyone is overjoyed.

Fook secretly invites Happ to meet at the temple and the next day they both happily go for the meeting, but they bump into Hei, Fei and Sheung and are very embarrassed. The emperor lays down an edict in order to build population numbers, instructing all suitable adults to be married within the year. All at Yat Sin Hin are encouraged by the prospect of business, but are chilled by On's comment that they will all need to be married as well. Fook and Hap arrange to meet at the temple again and Fook sends out a kite dedicated to Hap, who is in two minds whether or not to go. After much conflict, she decides to go and when Fook sees her coming, he cuts the string of the kite for her but unfortunately, it is picked up by Sheung.

Fook tries to explain to Hap that he didn't intend to see Sheung, but she pretends to be accepting and says they have fate on their side, Fook is disappointed. Under the imperial edict, Yat Sin Hin's business is booming and everyone is tired out. Fei sees this and suggests that they reorganise the work into sections to help with organisation. Fook isn't happy with this but Yung agrees and Hap drops hints to meet in the 10-Mile Pagoda. Fook waits for her there but the person who arrives is Sheung, Hap watches them from afar and them returning together and is again disappointed.

Everyone sees a falling meteor and Fei tells that the meteor stones have a legend about them, but Hei believes this is simply an astronomical phenomena. Fei and Hei sees a pedlar on the streets selling meteor stones, Fei wants to be charitable and doesn't care about the authenticity of the stones, buying them all, it turns out that they are genuine but when he tries them out with Hei, he finds they are both masculine and they repel each other, dashing their hopes. Fook buys some stones from some children to give to Hap, but accidentally Sheung gets hold of them and he is troubled. Wan and Yung want to bring Hei and Hap together, making wine balls for them to eat. On the other hand, Fook takes Fei to the brothel to choose a female partner but is unsuccessful. Hei and Hap become drunk and end up falling asleep in the store room together.

When Hap wakes up, she thinks Hei has taken advantage of her and wants to kill her and then kill herself, Hei is forced to reveal her real identity. Everyone is alarmed by the noise and arrive to see Hei leaning over Hap, Fei and Fook are both very shocked, Yung insists that Hei must take responsibility. Hei and Hap and Fei and Fook all arrive in the forest to discuss their problems Fook sees Hap and Hei together and the jealous feelings surface, Hap takes the chance to use Hei to irritate him.
