The acid was stored in powdered form. As long as it didn't touch blood, it was harmless, and could be stored in any old container. You could even hold it in your hand without coming to any harm (as long as it wasn't bleeding).
When it contacts blood though, it becomes a deadly flesh-eating acid. The acid is self-reproducing - any flesh it dissolves becomes more of the acid, so it sets off a chain-reaction that lasts until all flesh and bone is consumed (more like a virus than a chemical, actually). The resulting pool of acid can be dried to become the original powder. So as long as you never allow yourself to run out completely, you can easily have an everlasting supply!
