It's the story of Qing dynasty two famous court lawyer; Chan Mong Kat and his nemesis Fong Tong Keng. This will be a comedy costume series.

Synopsis:

The story of [Word Twisters' Adventures] happens during the era of Emperor Qianlong, set at Guangzhou area. A notorious lawyer who enjoy going against the court officials; Fong Tong Keng (Michael Tse) with the nickname of "Fong Tong Lawyer" (Fong Tong also have the double meaning of 'absurdity') was feared by officials and planned to move to Guangzhou.

Tong Geng thought he could establish a powerful career in Guangzhou, but he bumped into Lap Lan Qing Qing (Charmaine Sheh); a daughter of a minor court judge (Yuen Wah). Nicknamed 'Jade Faced Captor' (Jade faced means beautiful, Luo Cha means a trap or dungeon), she is well versed in Qing laws since childhood and assisted her father in solving many cases. She is certainly a formidable foe against Tong Geng.

In a turn of events, Qing Qing met spoiled rich brat Chan Mong Kat (Jordan Chan). To pull a prank on Qing Qing, Mong Kat stole her top underwear and placed them onto the two Gabenor's head. This has angered the officials and Mong Kat was charged in court. Tong Keng feel interested in the case and agreed to represent Mong Kat in court, revealing Qing Qing's true identity as her father secret assistant. He also brought along the prostitutes from local brothel "Fung Loi Yee" to expose the embarrassing behaviors of the officials. Fortunately, Qing Qing quick wit saved the day and Mong Kat was punished to be beaten 30 strokes. Because of this, Mong Kat harbors resentment toward Tong Geng and Qing Qing.

After some time, Qing Qing started to admire Tong Geng and think that he is a suitable candidate as a husband. However, Tong Geng likes frequenting brothels and this have incurred the wrath of Qing Qing, making her devise a plot to close down the brothels as revenge. The first brothels she sets her eyes on are "Fung Loi Yee". She disguised herself as a male and enters Fung Loi Yee, only to discover that the true owner is Mong Kat. Thus the three of them clashed again. Due to an internal struggle in royal court, Emperor Qing declared that Qing Qing should be married to Mong Kat...

In order to promote the message about quitting smoking, the relevant departments have organised a special 'Speed-Quitting Competition' and Michael Tse was the first to take part in this, successfully stopping smoking in just five weeks. After smoking for over twenty years, Michael admits that at first he was extremely tempted, but now he has successfully quit and he feels a lot healthier.

Michael says that the first period of giving up was very hard and sometimes when his wife was not around, he would sneak the odd cigarette, but after meeting with the event's pharmacist, he managed to lose the cravings. Is Michael so eager to give up because he plans to have children? He did not reply directly and just said that whatever the reason, giving up smoking is good for the person and for his work and it is only for the good.

Next month, Michael will be filming a Qing period drama with Jordan Chan, when he will have to shave his head. Asked if he is worried that after shaving his hair off, then it will not grow back as thickly, he syas that he has already asked advice from Ekin Cheng about how to care for his head and seeing how his hair has grown back thick and healthy, then Michael is not worried at all. Jordan is a very heavy smoker, is he worried he will be tempted by Jordan? He says that he is confident he will not be affected and he will also encourage Jordan to give up by tempting him to eat fruit instead.

After finish filming [Drive], Charmaine disclosed that she will rest for a month before filming TVB new series, [Chan Mong Kat & Fong Tong Keng]. She will be working with Michael Tse and Jordan Chan in the series, with majority of scenes with Jordan. She said that this was her first time collaborating with Jordan; she hopes they can spark chemistry. Asked if she is worried there will be rumors, she said: "I'm never worried. This kind of news doesn't appear this year, they occur every year."

Charmaine, who always packed her schedule with work, will be taking a break until mid May after finishing [Drive]. Afterward, she will join Qing costume series [Chan Mong Kat & Fong Tong Keng]. This series is about Qing dynasty two famous lawyers. Charmaine will be working with Jordan Chan and Michael Tse, with plenty of comedic scenes in store. In [Maiden's Vow] we already have a glimpse of Charmaine's comedic talent, this time they believe that working with Jordan will create sparks. As Charmaine's new series; 《方唐鏡與陳夢吉》Chan Mong Kat & Fong Tong Geng is going to start filming soon, I figure out it might be a good idea to give a short introduction about the lead character Chan Mong Kat. Those familiar with Cantonese movies/series most probably do not need my introduction, but just in case...hehe...

Anyway, I've found a short article about CMK and FTG on the internet. As the original article have a lot of difficult chinese prose, I hope you will bear with my translation:

Since old times, Guangdong people had pet phrase: "Never enter court in life, doesn't enter hell in death." Rule has it that one must be hit 30 strokes before meeting the official, unless you have academic honor (scholar) or powerful ancestor, the feeble citizens must kneel endlessly, and if you are illiterate you must request for someone to write the dispute document. To enter such complicated yamen (court) hall, hence the 訟師 (lawyer) emerged.

Lawyers assist in writing dispute document, and are very articulate in tribunal trials. Those who have conscience will help citizens to seek justice. Those who don't, will shamelessly cahoots with officials, bullying the citizens. Thereupon, there are folklore of "Guangdong Four Great Lawyer".

Nicknamed "Iron lips copper tooth, reversing six heavenly stem", holding a white fan in their hand, they are able to dumbfound seven county magistrates, the poor and weak citizens were able to seek justice because of the presence of this "Four Great Lawyers". They are the famous Chan Mong Kat, Fong Tong Geng, Ho Tam Yu and Lau Wah Tung.

Ranked first is none other than the famous "Ancestor of Twist"; Chan Mong Kat. In Cantonese, the word 扭計 (Nao gai - distorting, twisting) is extremely expressive: Reversing six heavenly stem, wise and many ideas, able to twist from dead to alive, to turn crook into straight, black into white, white into black. The word 'nao gai', means using intelligence to create a foolproof idea.

Afterward, the word 'nao gai' also widened into many meaning under the development of Cantonese language, for example if a child is being mischievous; they're also called as 'nao gai'.

For this Guangdong leading lawyer being regarded as "Ancestor of Twist", his skills and wisdom are revered as divinity by Lingnan folks.

According to legend, Chan Mong Kat came from Chan village in Shunde, Guangdong during Qing dynasty. It was said that he was extraordinary since childhood. When he was born, he did not cry nor make any sound; therefore his family thought he was deaf and mute. Later, after being enlightened by a master, his overwhelming talent and intelligence was gradually revealed. Afterward he was renowned as "Ancestor of Twist", "Kings of Ideas" (橋王之王) among Guangzhou citizens.

The word "橋" (bridge) means ideas (slang term in Cantonese), the more intelligent, the more ideas they have, the more eccentric and strange, always acting beyond expectation. In the legend, Chan Mong Kat does not fail to live up to his reputation as ancestor ranked lawyer. There are a lot of classical tales, because his ideas are often wonderful and known throughout the city, he naturally become the "King of Ideas" as well.

The writer have once heard a story from old people in Guangdong village, Chan Mong Kat's philosophy is "To make the world to believe it, you have to believe in it first". His understanding of "believe" is to "deceive". His argument must convince the court officials and also the audiences of the trial. He wants everyone to believe what he is saying is the truth, absolutely correct. Even though he might say the sun rises from the west, he will also say it in such a confusing way that everyone bowed in admiration. In order for the whole world to believe it, he must make himself believe that the sun really rises up from the west. If one often believes in whatever themselves said, surely they will suffer from mental sickness. Unless you have talent and intelligence like "Ancestor of Twist"; it's unlikely that any other can accomplish his feat.

In Guangdong folklore, Fong Tong Geng and Chan Mong Kat are sworn enemy. The former is a cunning court prosecutor, self-designated as intelligent and many ideas. As the representative of court officials, inevitably he has a lot of confrontation with public lawyer Chan Mong Kat. In those old black and white Cantonese movies, they have many outstanding scenes of the duo battling their wits; audiences can see maliciousness of the "Despicable Ideas Lawyer" (FTG), and how he was subdued by the intelligent and witty "King of Ideas" (CMK). Their battles were like the layout of a high-level chess moves; meticulous, heart thrilling, a slight error means total defeat. In the end of the article, the writer comments how he missed the old time CMK movies. -end-

p.s. TVB have filmed a version called "Herald of Good Fortune" starring Deric Wan, Kathy Chow, Margie Tsang, Paul Chun etc and is one of the memorable series for me. The series was funny and witty, I really missed watching this one. You can read the story and review here.

Oh, so Fong Tong Keng actually existed! He's the one played by Lawrence Ng who was absolutely thrashed by Stephen Chow in his excellent movie "Hail the Judge".

Sounds like a good series, though.. hopefully it'll focus on the cases and not too much on Charmaine....

Jordan Chan, who has not filmed TVB series for 10 years, recently returned to old nest. He will be working with TV Queen Charmaine Sheh in new series [Chan Mong Kat], filming to begin mid this month. In the series, Jordan portrays the mischievous "King of Ideas" Chan Mong Kat, pairing up with Charmaine.

When asked if he is worried of having rumors with "Rumor Queen", Jordan joked that there are possibilities: "We are both single, so nothing is impossible. But honestly, I'm here to film series, not to court girls. Rumors are unavoidable."

Everytime a singer film series, they will be accused of exchanging for award? Jordan laughed loudly at this: "I don’t even have a song this year, how to exchange for award?" Turns out that his mandarin album was only recorded halfway, and unfortunately after filming [Chan Mong Kat], he will be going to Beijing to film [陳真傳] (another series/movie). Therefore his album will keep being delayed. There’s a slim chance for his album to be released this year.

Michael Tse and Jordan Chan prepared for their new series "Steel Lips Silver Teeth" with a headshaving ceremony, joined by female lead Charmaine Sheh. Seeing the men having so much fun, she wanted to join in the fun, so she picked up the shaver and helped them out, but left their heads in a bit of a mess. Michael requested the stylist to leave him with a punk hairstyle until he shaves it clear later on today.

Michael says that he will miss his hair a little, but he has not kept any as a memento because it will slowly grow back again. He says: "Yesterday, I originally asked my wife to give me a punk hairdo, but after an hour, it failed and we just gave up and I had to ask the stylist to do it for me." Michael has not worked with Jordan for a while now and he hopes to convince him into giving up smoking, but says disappointedly: "I don't think he can do it, I can just mention it more in front of him."

For Jordan, this is the second time he has shaved his hair for a series after "Duke of Mount Deer" earlier. He is used to it now, but he laughs: "I had my hair permed especially for this!" As for Michael hoping he will quit smoking, he says with confusion: "In the show he has to smoke a pipe, so we will have to see if he is quitting or if I am." For Charmaine who will have her costume fitting today, she says she is envious of their shaved heads because it seems so refreshing and she would not have to spend so much time doing her hair, especially when schedules are tight, then a bald head is more convenient. As for her first attempt at shaving someone's head, she says she was worried about hurting them. When asked about her catching the top of Michael's head, she laughs: "It serves him right, he is always so cheeky. He just said he would like to shave my legs for me!"
