I've watched literally every version of ROCH possible with the exception of the 70's and this one is by far my favorite adaptation. Everything from the acting, storyline, costumes and fighting scenes are wonderful. What I like best is that this version added a few things but it wasn't for the heck of it. It rather added more dimension to both the characters and storyline. It's much more entertaining than watching a series that is 90% exactly like the novel.

this was the first 1980's drama i watched and it made me fall in love with TVB 80's. the costumes, lively casts, majestic background, and beautiful music made TVB 80's very neat even though it lacked the technology to produce today's dramas. loved this adaption the most, but have yet to watch the 90's version with Louis Koo and Carmen Lee so dont want to decide which one of the two is the best. still need to get this one to complete the 80's condor heroes trilogy. overall great cast and great adaption.

I think I continued to watch this adaption because they bought back the Veteran actors (The Five Greats + Chow Ba Tong) in here. I didn't really like Idy's acting but I enjoyed Andy Lau. The costumes in here were great. theme song was catchy. I'm sure most people my age would not enjoy this series because there isn't enough CGI.

Overall, it's a great adaption of ROCH. One of the best ones I've seen.

I like this series not only because the main casts, but supporting characters also has perfect casts. Auyang Pei San the best mature Huang Rong compare to any version! Her smart eyes, gestures, supported by proper hairdo/wardrobe. For XLN, even though Idy Chan is not the most beautiful woman, but they managed to make Idy the most beautiful maiden in the series. They wouldn't let other supporting characters overshadow her. Her acting is quite convincing as mostly emotionless girl but fell in love with Yang Guo. Her chemistry with Andy Lau is so believable, even without sophisticated camera angle and beautiful background like in the 2006. Yes there are laughable props like Jin Lun Da Wang fake bald head and Yang Guo's chopped arm often came out and terrible condor.. but the fighting choreography is better than 94, casts and the plot/story is still enjoyable even until today. Classic!

Doubtless the original and the best , its the only version I could watch over and over again (except for the boring part between the cliffhanger and the last episode) Not so with the newer versions which are overdrawn charmless, too technical and too "cute". Keep it simple. The author when interviewed says Idy Chan is his favourite.

best tvb remake of any of jing rong's novels ever. definitely better than the 1995 version. and just as good or maybe a lil better than the 2006 version. Andy Lau is the best YG...ever. Chun Wong is the best ZBT...ever. ROCH1983, 1995 and 2006 all had good XLN though.

For me this was the least enjoyable of the 70s/80s TVB Jin Yong series. I really didn't buy Idy's XLN. Part of it is that she looks really pedestrian and acted put offish, rather than the ethereal XLN described in the book. And Andy Lau's Yang Guo was off putting.

Like the novel, the series was also convoluted without being much fun to follow. It was a big come down from Felix Wong and Barbara Yung.

we;; for me this series is quite boring!!!!! Idy is not the perfect XLN for me!!!the most prfect XLN is carman she successfully brought out the coldness and stunning beauty of XLN....Idy is cute and silent in her version of XLN but it still lack the most important part the coldness and smart looking part of XLN....but she did bring out the jealousy of XLN perfectly well...if the 95 version wasn't a low budget film carman could've more acting space in that version....the backgroung would be perfect and she could play a jealous part of XLN like Idy did....too bad it was a low budget film...if it wasnt carman could've show the jealous part and her more strong love for YG...she could've become the most perfect XLN ever

Wow. Another huge fan of this production. :) I've seen the actual drama on TV and am v disappointed by the VCD box set produced by TVB. Many scenes were snipped. It's a pity and most unfair to a fantastic show like ROCH. :(
