Duke of Mt. Deer
Duke of Mt. Deer 1998

This is my favorite adaptation of DOMD. It may not be the most faithful to the original novel but I found that all the changes made to this version added more depth, development and dimension to the overall series. Jordan was awesome as WXB and fits the character to the T. I think what attracts me the most is the great chemistry between all the casts which is something that all the other versions lack. As much as I'm a die-hard fan of the 80's and absolutely adore the Andy/Tony duo, I have to give to this one!

The Heavenly Sword and Dragon Saber

This is probably the worst adaptation of HSDS that I've ever watched. Casting Lawrence was a joke while both Gigi and Charmaine weren't well rounded or capable enough to portray their respective roles of ZM and ZZR. The supporting cast weren't suitable either. If they were going to change the storyline drastically then they might as well made a new series as oppose to ruining such a well loved classic and disrespecting Jin Yong's work. No wonder he banned TVB from producing anymore of his novels. If you've never watched HSDS before then you might enjoy it but if you've watched any other version then this one will definitely fail in comparison.

The New Adventures of Chor Lau Heung

Michael as CLH is pretty much flawless! Just the ending scene alone showcases his talents where he can convey so many different emotions within a few seconds. His physique and handsome face also further makes the character even more charming. The biggest highlights of this series for me is the awesome chemistry between Michael and Barbara as well as Simon Yam acting as the antagonist. This is definitely one of my favorite series and I highly recommend it to everyone who is a wuxia fan.

I guess I'm in the minority because I didn't really care for this version. I've always categorized CLH as someone who is charming, intelligent and caring but Adam's Cheng's portrayal came out the opposite IMHO. I couldn't connect him with during his emotional scenes either which was a disappoint because I know how everyone highly praises Adam as an experienced actor. I also have to say that the cases were boring and predictable furthermore, no one's performance stood out to me. Other aspects such as the slow fighting, slow pace and draggy scenes are excusable due to the time it was produced. Overall, I think this adaptation is average, nothing spectacular especially in comparison to the 1984 version.

The Return of the Condor Heroes

I've watched literally every version of ROCH possible with the exception of the 70's and this one is by far my favorite adaptation. Everything from the acting, storyline, costumes and fighting scenes are wonderful. What I like best is that this version added a few things but it wasn't for the heck of it. It rather added more dimension to both the characters and storyline. It's much more entertaining than watching a series that is 90% exactly like the novel.

I'm a huge fan of the 80's but this series was a huge disappointment. It had great potential with the all star cast and beautiful wardrobes but sadly, the overall acting and storyline itself was lacking. The main characters weren't likeable and inconsistent and rather came off annoying. The villains were way too obvious, predicable and boring, it was the same actors playing similar roles to previous TVB series. The supporting characters did nothing for me either. Normally they add some dimension or purpose to the series but in this case, they did neither. Too many characters rather made everything overwhelming and dragging.
