The novel centres on central affairs of the palace in the kingdom of Lavender as a young and playful rascal, Ji Shen, discovers of his status as a king. At the same time, the exiled once-Queen Kang Fen has, in revenge, assembled a demonic sect to wipe out the whole kingdom and bring upon a realm of disaster.

MEMBERS OF THE PALACE
Jia Rui Wan (賈蕊晚): Rui is the Imperial Advisor in the Palace of Everlasting Dreams. Her grandfather was the previous Advisor. (17)
Shen Wang/Ji Shen (季 深): He is the present king and also Rui’s close friend. (17)
Tong Meng (童 孟): He is a small general and a long-lost prince. (18)
Tong Ling (童 靈): Ling is the younger sister of Meng, a skilled archer. (14)
Tong Shu (童 淑): Shu is the younger brother of Meng, and Ling’s twin brother. He is the top general. (16)
Lang Xin / Wolf Heart (狼 心): He is well-learnt and handles many of the affairs of the Palace, a government officer. (16)
Chang Yan aka Chang Chang Gong Zu (嫦 嫣): Princess of Evergreen, she is said to be Shen’s fiancée but Shen is not keen on marriage. (16)
Chan Xiang (禪 香): A young Taoist priest who learns about the meaning of life only after he comes out to face the world. (15)
Qin Da (琴 打): He is a musician and the first male dancer in the palace. (15)
Lan Li Hong (藍力宏): He is young and innocent, and another of Qin Da’s troupe. (15)
Wang Lu: Another of their troupe. (15)
Xian Yi (羨藝): Li Hong’s childhood friend. Joins the troupe. (16)
THE DEMONS
Kang Fen aka Mo Nu / Demoness (魔女康芬): The leader of the Shutian sect, in fact an exiled empress from the palace. In revenge, she schemes for the throne.
Si Qi / Death Day aka Hei Zhu / Black Pearl (死期/黑珠): She is a snake demon who takes over the body of a young woman, Yang Xiaohu. With Xiaohu’s body she manages to obtain a place in the Palace.
Sha Wei (沙 尾): Si Tian’s husband. He is a bear demon.
Xie Shang / Bloodwound (血 傷): Another bear demon, who is far more powerful than Sha Wei.
Zai Min / Civilian Killer (宰 民): A rat demon who captures humans for Sha Wei and Xie Shang’s consumption.
An Ma (暗 痲): A lizard demon and another member of the sect.
