Sometimes it's hard to love someone because you're so afraid of losing them.

Its not in theatres anymore. Its on DVD, but I don't want to see it anymore if it has a sad ending.

One movie that I thought was really good and sad at the same time was Artificial Intelligence: AI starring Haley Joel Osment.

The saddest movie I've ever seen is the one and only film that had me just bawling. I mean, the scene in the film CTHD where Mu Bai dies in Xiu Lian's arms after confessing his lifelong love for her brought tears to my eyes. But the whole film The Changeling is the saddest thing I've ever seen on film.

Oscar award winner George C Scott plays a musician who has writer's block and is no longer able to compose music. In an effort to solve his problem and have a quiet place to work, he buys a turn of the century mansion to work in. He soon discovers a problem with the house. It's haunted. By a small child. Before realizing that, George's character believes the very troubled ghost is trying to seek his help for something. What, he tries to find out. In the process he learns that the child was murdered by his father. Turns out as a child, he was very sick and was the wealthy family's only child and heir. The child had polio or something and was an embarrassment to the family, so was hidden away all his life in the attic. To ensure that their money would remain within the family, his father murdered him and in secret had another child brought in to replace him as their son -- "the changeling" -- who eventually becomes this powerful and wealthy US Senator.

The child even shows George's character how he died. His father comes in while he's bathing and drowns him, eventually dumping his body in what would become an abandoned well. There's a seen where 70 or 80 or so years later, the ghost leads George's character to a house. Why, he doesn't know. But the owner lets him in and once there, while looking at the floor, he sees the child drowning in water. Later, the floor boards are pulled up, they dig deep into the ground to find the well and the small child's body. Along with his body is his Baptismal locket.

All the child wanted was his locket. $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://csc.ziyi.org/smilies/crying.gif')

So sad in many ways. First, it just amazes me what people would do, especially to children. Second, it's just freaky how George's character comes to realize that while experiencing his temper tantrums and bizarre behavior, the ghost was just a child. Third, it was just so moving that all he wanted to find peace was something so simple as a locket. I've not seen this film in years, but it's HIGHLY recommended.

Pemberly, if you like scary movies (I mean, freakishly scary) and don't mind shedding a tear or two, check out The Changeling. I think you'd like it. $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://csc.ziyi.org/smilies/yes.gif')

i actually saw a clip of this movie on 100 scariest movie moments or something like that. it's the one with the ball that keeps coming back, right? i think i might check that out. there were actually quite a few movies on that list that i wanted to check out, including a freaky japanese one where this girl cuts off a guy's fingers and toes and stuff with metal wire.

Yup.. that's it. After throwing the ball (used to belong to his own dead daughter) in the river, he comes home only to see the same wet ball coming down the stairs. $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://csc.ziyi.org/smilies/worry.gif') $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://csc.ziyi.org/smilies/laugh.gif')

I was mistaken to say, "But the owner lets him in and once there, while looking at the floor, he [George's character] sees the child drowning in water." I had not seen the film in at least 15 years when I posted that. But I've seen it since. It's the daughter of the owner who sees the boy beneath the floor of her bedroom, where the well was abandoned. That compelled her to allow George to rip up the floor and dig for the boy's body.

And I swear, my face was like a leaking faucet throughout watching it for the first time in so long. It's that sad, scary and good. $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://csc.ziyi.org/smilies/drool.gif')

    1. What's eating Gilbert Grape, -- a very raw movie.
    2. Patch Adams

Incidently, this thread is more than two years old and going strong!
i totally agreed! gotf is an anime but so overwhelmingly powerful for me. any other sad movies i can rewatch but this one is just so painful i can't. just thinking about it makes me sad. not only is this one sad, it's very heart wrenching.

other honorable mentions for me include "the lovers" and an early taiwanese weepy "desperate love, bitter end" with chin han. i bawled so much watching these but i'll watch it again.

Los Amantes del Círculo Polar or The Lovers of the Arctic Circle (in spanish with ESub)

    IMDB info

a tale about the darkened lovers and their near-misses and made it into a tale of haunting characterizations, leaving something mysterious about this intangible and intelligent film that held your undivided attention throughout
lol, quote is not by me, I just copied it
