Is there a circumstance when a martial artist survived underwater for a long period of time? Is it possible to use inner power to help breath underwater? Is there a specific kungfu for these circumstances?

I would say that it has to help at least a bit. How else would people have underwater fights like Da Qi Si and her husband did? hehe

Chu Liuxiang was known for being able to breathe underwater, but I think it was a deformity rather than a martial arts skill. It was only because of this skill that he was able to "defeat" the monstrously powerful Water Matriarch Yinji.
明月心跳起來,又回頭,嫣然道,“你還要不要我帶上那面具?”
傅紅雪冷道,“現在你臉上豈非已經戴上了個面具?”
About how long can inner power lengthen? My guess is around two minutes or a bit more .
A lot longer than that I'd imagine. One of fighters from Yellow river clan held his head in snow for ages ... everyone was just watching him and drink tea (LOCH).
Two minutes isn't that long, most professional divers/swimmers can hold their breath for 5min+.
I held my breath underwater for 85secs, before someone pulled me up thinking that I drowned.
so does that mean with inner power martial artists could hold their breath for over 5 minutes?Originally Posted by yittz
people in real life can hold their breath well over 5 minutes.
how long did Xie Xun and the other guy hold their breath in that contest at the beginning of HSDS? I dont remember, but it was probably pretty long.
havent come up with a good one yet..
Holding one's breath is pretty much a function of cardiovascular fitness. At my best, I was able to hold my breath for well over 2 minutes. That's enough time to swim underwater the length of a medium sized pool. And I'm hardly the epitome of fitness.
I bet those who live in high altitudes would be able to hold their breath for a long time if they come down to sea-level.
it is impossible to breathe under water lol unless we have gills
it is more of holding breath and limiting the expenditure of oxygen
well yeah i didn't really make much sense... but how much longer can inner power help you hold your breath?Originally Posted by darkchoki
wuxia skill are exaggerated in context with the real world. eg. qing gong or lightness kungfu... norm ppl can't leap that high in the air and hover while they fight out.
how long can martial art expert hold their breath can't be answered just like tat.
but we can discuss abt how does inner power helps them to hold their breath. By reducing oxygen consumption? or altering acupoint channels?
Isn't there a skill in Jiu Yin/Yang Zhen Jing where Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu learnt the technique to hold their breaths underwater. This technique was later used by them to swim out of ancient tomb and much later for Xiao Long Nu to dive under the water to mediate/heal on the frozen waterbed at the bottom of Heartbroken Cliff
Yes, it is one of the three skills from 9 Yin left by WCY in the Ancient Tomb.Originally Posted by darkchoki
Also from memory, in XAJH, there's clans who specialises in attacking their opponent's boats etc.... they try to sink LHC's boat.
inner power do help MA to breath underwater since MA practitoner learn how to control breath and regulates it, and if u may know that they could easily took 1 breath per minute for their whole day, so to say to breath/hold breath underwater wouldn`t be a problem, more than 30 mins not less than 2 mins. there r body-breathing techniques that is applicable for this instead of using the norm nose/mouth breathing...
Let him be violent,
Let him be evil,
For me, it is enough if I
just breathe in my pure energy."

It should be depending on works.
WuXia, after all, is fantasy, there's nothing stopping a writer from writing that a Inner Power Art can allow one to hold one's breath for days if she or he wants.
