Does anyone know if there is a special city kept just for filming all the wuxia movies? Or are the movies filmed throughout ancient sites in China?
I really like those cities they have in the movies. Can I visit them when I go to China?

You'd be surprised to know they actually built most of those sets for filming. As for scenery, it's getting hard to find pristine landscape in Chine. For House of Flying Daggers the outdoors was filmed in Yugoslavia of all places.

A list of well-known trademarks in the filming city would include the replicas of the Qin Wang Palace which was the set of films such as "Hero", "Wind and Cloud", "Han Wu Da Di", the Forbidden City which was used to film "War and Beauty", Guangzhou/HongKong street, used to film "The Opium War" and "The young Wong Fei Hong" and the Jiangnan province, used to film "The book and Sword" etc.

Other familiar places would include Yang zhou, Su zhou and the beautiful Jiu Zai Gou, which was the set for certain parts of ROCH'06.

There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.

Zhang Yimou had to film most scenes there because he specifically wanted a real bamboo forest which he couldn't find in China. The pandas in china have been doing their jobs i supposeOriginally Posted by Surferket

Can't believe bamboo can only be found in panda szechuan province in the whole of China. And wth is Yugo doing with a bamboo forest?
The pace China is expanding her cities and special economic zones all over the place pretty soon China will have to film their outdoor sceneries all at the little backyard of TVB's CEO home. You know that little trail that runs between 2 clumps of stunted trees that appears in every HK movie/series since the days of Shaw Bros.

As much as China is expanding, it is only obvious in her major cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, Guangzhou and so on. You'll be surprised to know that many of her major provinces and countrysides still remain poor and rural. And im sure China is aware of the revenue generated from tourist visits to scenic/ historical landmarks.Originally Posted by Surferket

Lol, pandas? More like the developers and industrial companies... And even though most of China is rural, destruction of natural lands for farmland is the biggest problem to a lot of China's pristine environment. Unfortunately, no easy solution to either problem.
House of Flying Daggers was partly filmed in Ukraine, the forest scenes, but as far as I know, that doesn't extend to bamboo forest scenes. Those were still filmed in China; the other forests (and the scene towards the end where ZZY died 4 times) were in foreign territory.
I was in China last year and it was a beautiful country and Beijing itself is very clean compared to other major cities. The journey from Beijing to ChengDe took about 4 hours and the countryside is really beautiful. The rural areas that we stopped during the journey didn't have proper toilet and water LOL You can see the ruins of Great Wall of China along the way and one can imagine how long the wall is. The most beautiful of all is ChengDe palace. I could even see wild deers running around freely. China definitely a nice country to visit, and I'm planning to go back someday.Originally Posted by sunnysnow

Thanks for the infomation everyone.
I hope China can maintain most of its precious sites.
I heard the Yang zi river is know as the river of cancer now.
And I heard they're tearing down parts of Guangxi to build a dam. I think that is unfortunate. Guilin looks like the most beautiful place in the world.
My mom asked this question many times through the years, but I couldn't answer her at first. However, after more than 20 years of watching ancient series, I finally found out the answers.
At first, I thought they were filmed at the actual ancient sites too. But that wouldn't make sense since those sites are so fragile and precious, I don't think that would be possible.
I heard about China wanting to build the 3 Gorges Dam years ago since the Yang Zi river will overflow... I am so sad to hear that many of the precious sites in China will be gone... I heard that many of the historians wanted to save these sites, but it is hard to since it will be a lot of work and money. I don't know if the Chinese government is willing to spend that much on saving and preserving these precious historical sites. My teacher was telling us to go and visit them before it is too late... I don't think I will be able to... I guess I will never be able to see them in real life, only in pictures or videos.....
Respect other people's opinions and views. If we learn how to do that than all of these fights and arguments will not occur.
I thought they film wuxia series in Yosemite!
I just visited Jiu Zai Gou; a lot of ancient series with beautiful natural scenery have been filmed there. At least two parts of the classic old Xi You Ji were filmed there (the ending song where the 4 walk over the falls, and the pool where Ba Jie and the spider demons were swimming). I also got to see the pool Zhang Yi Mou filmed a scene of Hero at (the one where they're fighting and walking on water, with a small house they apparently built on the scene and then removed.)
As we were leaving Jiu Zai Gou, the tour guide also pointed out a long, grassy field where he said he and a tour group passed by and saw the cast of ROCH '06 filming there last year. Wish we could've caught a series being filmed on the spot!
lucky if u can catch ROCH06...bad for u
