Yes
No

Actually, permanently banned members are not supposed to return at all. Of course, it's always possible for a permanently banned member to sneak back in under a new username if he/she does not do anything to attract attention to himself/herself as being the same member who had been banned. If such person continues the inappropriate behaviors that got him/her banned in the first place, however, it usually does not take long for moderators to spot him/her and ban the new account as well.Originally Posted by Huang Rong
Not that the moderators encourage permanently banned members to try this, but if they do choose to return to the forums in such a manner, they would be wise to maintain a low profile and not attract negative attention towards themselves. Otherwise, they'll soon find themselves back where they started.
Well, it's rather easy for Mods and Admins to check IPs of the users so the banned member certainly can't fool people.
What I mean is that openly returning under a new name with a brand new behaviour.

Strictly speaking, that isn't allowed. The bans do not exist just so people can get around them.Originally Posted by Huang Rong
If the banned member returns after a period of time (at least several months) has passed, and demonstrates a sincere effort to conduct himself/herself in a manner that is consistent with forum guidelines, then the moderators *might* choose to let it pass. Just coming back as if nothing had happened, however, is definitely frowned upon.
I see, thank you SM.
But what if he/she *openly* returns with a *new IP*, under a *new name* and a *new behaviour*? At that time, __legally__, he/she is a new member. Will you mods continue to ban him/her?

Well, gee, Rong-er, if said member has a new name, new M.O., *and* a new IP, we'd probably never even know it was the same member we banned, so the point would be moot.Originally Posted by Huang Rong

you mods and admins all *know* that he/she returns, but *legally*, he/she is a *new member* who has a new IP, a new username and a new behaviour which doen't violate any rule, will you keep banning?

I thought I already answered this question in post # 4 of this thread.Originally Posted by Huang Rong
thanks for clearing up my questions.
anyway IMO, banning a member whose "IP, behaviour and username" are new just because he/she "admits" that he/she is a former permanently banned member is too harsh.

The key here is *behavior*. Behavior is not just a new post that says, "Hi. I was a jerk and a troublemaker before, but I'm good now."Originally Posted by Huang Rong
The proof is in the pudding. If the banned member wants back in, he/she needs to prove that he/she is sincere and commited to being a better member...by doing all the right things consistently over an extended period of time. Only then will amnesty be considered.
If it's just, "I'm back, LOL!" then forget it: back into ban-land he/she goes.
i might be showing my age and how long i've been a moddie with this story, but i do recall an instance of what you're saying.
a couple of years ago, one member caused quite a scene, and consequently directly influenced spcnet's decision not to have relationship threads on the forums. he was banned permanently because of his behavior on this forum, especially towards another member. after, i think, a couple of weeks, he returned under a new, but obvious name, and the other member had forgiven him for his actions. moddies kept a close eye on his posts from then on, but as he carried on as if this incident never happened, he did not get into any other trouble nor did moddies or spcnet ever bring the subject up again. he has since left this forum.
but, like i said, this was a long time ago, and some of the current moddies weren't even moddies yet. wow, i'm an old timer.

That depends. I will try to return, if my banning was a mistake or something.
Never. I got better things to do than to troll a forum.
If I was ever banned from a forum, I think I would be too pissed to even come back. Why go back to a place that I am not accepted? I will find some other forum to go to.
I think what you said only applies when you are banned despite not doing anything wrong.Originally Posted by Felix
That would not happen at SPCNET. People do not get banned without reason.Originally Posted by Guo Xiang
Recently, I received a private message from a member who requested to be banned. I turned down the request because the member had not done anything to break the rules. Instead, I just suggested the member to stop visiting if he/she didn't want to anymore, but we were not going to ban him.
We just don't do business that way.
Actually its easy for him to get banned. Tell him to piss off any mod or admin and he shall get his reward.Originally Posted by Ken Cheng
Why would you return after being banned? Obviously your presence is no longer needed. There are hundreds and thousands of other forums out there to join. No need to keep going back to the same one.
IMO, if you were to get into an argument with another forum member and the argument becomes too personal, it's better off done in PM or other private messaging services like MSN, AIM, etc.
