Surrender Seung Yeung Fortress/City to Mongolian control and turn himself in as a prisoner to Mongke Khan, basically.

Wouldn't they have thought that GJ would rather sacrifice GX than to surrender Seung Yeung?

No. The enemy didn't understand Gwok Jing's personality that well. Even Wong Yung was shocked that Gwok Jing was leaning towards sacrificing his daughter for the survival of the city.

Go read some history, and look up what hostages are. Using sentimentally valuable individuals is exactly what it involves, and it's sedentary civilisations that use them the most. So I'd wager China has taken hostages on a regular basis, although they might have been dressed up under a different name.

Really? HR was shocked? I'd expect her to know what GJ would do... especially since this is after the incident when GJ was going to cut off GF's arm...

No less proud than a nation that would threaten to boil an entire family alive (Chu-Han contention).

My guess is that they didn't have high hopes for the plan to work, but wanted to give it a shot anyways.

Worst case scenario they'd be able to upset all the defenders at Xiangyang and deal a psychological blow.
