Default CC and PJ: I think SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan *might* have appeared in DGSD '81

    CC and PJ:

Although you guys previously told me that SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan did not appear in DGSD '81, I think there's a slight chance that he (or at least, another character based loosely upon him) might have shown up in that adaptation.

SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan only appeared in the chapter where Mo Yung F'uk, Ding Chun Chou, and the 72 Islands, 36 Caves (or vice-versa) guys attacked Ling Jau Gung, correct? And as his title implies, he was mostly known as a swordsman, correct? Well, although nobody in DGSD '81 went explicitly by the name of SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan and accomplished those feats that you guys have quoted time and again from the novel, there was one character who was part of the assault team against Ling Jau Gung in DGSD '81 with the Cantonese surname "Cheuk." If I remember correctly, the Cantonese pronunciation of "Zhuo" is something like "Cheuk." Moreover, this "Cheuk" guy in DGSD '81 was apparently a sword specialist. His weapon was a sword, and he was cutting down the Ling Jau Palace guards more efficiently than anybody else there other than Mo Yung F'uk.

Do you think this "Cheuk" character was meant to be SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan?

Which episode is that? Let me know, and I can look it up.
Something to distract me momentarily from the stack of student progress reports would be nice!

Since I've got the rather cut up VCD to DVD transfer, I don't know the exact episode number, but it's on Disc 11.

It's during the 72 Islands, 32 Caves' assault on Ling Jau Palace...shortly before that infamous scene where Hui Juk interrupts Deun Yu's glorious moment of having Wong Yu Yin weep tears of pity for him by telling him that he had suffered only an inconsequential flesh wound.

In the 2001 edition VCD of DGSD II (not I) from TVBI, there is a mention of a Brother Zhuo in Disc 3 just before the assault on Ling Jiu Gong started. This Brother Zhuo is supposed to lead one of the 4 assault teams, together with Big Boss Wu. Later on, he holds Wang Yuyan hostage and scratches Duan Yu with his sword. This particular act (the hostage-taking and scratching) is one of the many done by Zhuo Bufan in the novel. So this Brother Zhuo here could actually be a scaled-down version of the real Zhuo Bufan.

I skimmed through Disc 2 (the meeting proper of the 72 Islands and 36 -- not 32-- Caves) to see if this Brother Zhuo was introduced and named in full, but I didn't see anything. I could have missed it, though, so you could try and look for a long-haired chap in brown clothes called Cheuk Bat Faan in Cantonese.

OK, distraction over ... back to work...

    That's him, all right.

Aha! So SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan (or at least, a poor man's version of him) does appear in DGSD '81 after all!

I don't think he appears again in the adaptation, but I'll keep an eye out for him. His next chance to show up is towards the end of DGSD '81, but if he does show up again, things won't look bright for him: the remaining 72 Islands, 36 Caves guys show up again towards the end of the series only to become victims of ALL POWERFUL VILLAIN Mo Yung Bok.

OT: Eh? Ken Cheng teaches and HuangYushi teaches too? Who else is in the teaching profession here?

BTW, someone remarked HuangYushi's writing to be quite formal. (I think its a compliment).

There are two more whom I know of, but I'll wait for them to speak up for themselves. Edit: One of them just did.

Thank you. I teach English as a second language (and Mandarin as a third/other language with a goal of it becoming a second language for the student), so I guess I'm used to being a bit more formal than usual in my writing, even on forums and in SMS.

I'd love to oblige, but unfortunately, I have neither the hardware nor the software to accomplish that.

I will let you in on a (literally) dirty little secret, however: SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan's (if that is indeed whom that "Cheuk" character was meant to represent in DGSD '81) clothing was recycled later in LOCH '82 as one of Gong Nam 7 Freaks # 2 Chu Chung's outfits.

So at least in TVB's 80s JinYongverse, Chu Chung got SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan's hand-me-downs!

Ken, if you have Cyberlink Power DVD, theres a little camera icon which you can click on and it captures the screen and you can paste it into Photoshop, to get a screencap.

Interesting. I didn't know SPCNET was such a gathering for teachers. What grade level or age range do you teach?

I swear, Zhuo Bufan is just not a remarkable character as PJ and CC make him to be, I can't remember who is, what he does or when he appears. No recollection whatsoever. Yes, blasphemous, I just don't have a deep impression of whoever he is.

Bah, that dude is quite a fiasco in the role of such an important character. According to the novel, SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan is:

    见那人身穿青衫,五十来岁年纪,长须飘飘,面目清秀,认得他是“剑神”卓不凡。

Wearing a green garment, around the age of 50, long beard floating, with a delicate face.

THIS would be a more fitting person to play SWORD GOD:

    $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://pjshimmer.homeunix.com/bai_shijing.jpg')

p.s. please advice if you are not able to see the image.

    Thanks.

Hmm, doesn't look very much like the novel's description (e.g. no wispy beard).

The DGSD 81 DCQ (in the pic's background) had the evil freak look but the 03' version was more true to the novel by casting a younger looking guy with the tacked on white beard (Ding was supposed to look young but with a flowing beard).

The DGSD03 SWORD GOD, well I suppose he is better. He carried himself with a bit of a pompous air which is how ZBF was.

Ah! That would be the beauty of the character that is SWORD GOD Zhuo Bufan. The Supreme Master of Wuxia - Mr Cha, created and described the character with such a delicate balance of feats and descriptions that both myself and PJ completely missed all the hints Mr Cha dropped about SWORD GOD (we even got his name wrong for years!) until several detailed re-readings.
