Hard question as well as disappointing if you are American. I would have babbled on about discrepancy in socioeconomic status, -> education, lack of travel and awareness of the outside world, too much focus on LOCAL geography in schools.

Gees, with 1/5th not knowing where US is, I am no longer surprised that they have no idea what New Zealand is at all.

that's a super easy question.

1) the reason is that geography doesn't play a big parts in the US education system anymore because society feels that the subject of geography might not be as important as other core subjects such as math english ect...

2) then she should throw in something bullshit like this:
I do feel that geography is important common knowledge to have, and the learning curve is not very hards, therefore we should place more emphasis to teaching geography in our education system.

Hm... that's not how i would have answered the question. I would not have mentioned geography at all.

I would have talked about the value of education in a society where basically everyone has the opportunity to be educated. However, the modern day society breeds interest in fashion icons, commercialism, the entertainment industry etc. and education is left behind these modern trends. Self indulgence, a lack of awareness about anything outside of their own, often limited sphere, something along the lines of that.

I can imagine how popular i'd be... lol.
