Default What music you don't like?

I took a peak at the American Idol thread and I was reminded why I don't watch that show. Not because I don't like reality TV (I usually don't), but I can't stand the American style of singing. You know, the African American style, the Whitney Houston way of prolonging the vocal with tonal variation? I get that singers want to show their singing talent, but the prolonging gets on my nerve big time. I rather listen to hip hop , which I usually don't like, than to a drone.
My obsessions: Joy Division, New Order, Bones, The Office.

Yeah, I really dislike that too (although I do like Whitney Houston's earlier, 1980s work). It's not that the vocal ability isn't impressive, but it's usually demonstrated at the expense of the song's melody. What these singers usually do is bend a song's melody out of shape to display their vocal chops, which destroys the beauty of the melody (to quote Chuck Berry). A song's melody is very fragile; there's a certain range within which an interpretive singer can play with it and retain its beauty, but take it too far and the melody devolves into a mess. That's the problem with many AMERICAN IDOL (and before them STAR SEARCH) singers.

The irony is that I kind of enjoy the audition part of American Idol because it's funny, but when it's time for the "real talent", that's when I change the channel.

I can't be those people who claim they like all types of music. Being a musician, I get labeld as snobby, which is true though.

Country music, while I respect some of the great country musicians. The music just doesn't ring to me.

Rap, not my thing. But I do like Run DMC.

And yea, I"m not a fan of fancy bends and vibratos too much either.

Most of country, although some excpetions.
Heavy heavy metal ...rock is okay, but pure screaming/bashing is not.
Rap 50/50 ~ sometimes okay, but most of the time seems a bit mumbly to me.
Really happy bubblegum pop music ~ coupled w/ bad singing.

Although there's exceptions in every one of these categories, I mostly don't care for them:

    Heavy Metal rock - No.

Country - thanks but no thanks

Highly Experimental (like Radiohead) - Too high brow for me

Manufactured Copycats (like the later boy bands) - a disgrace to the art

faster-paced Classical rock with jazz or swing flavors (like Frank Sinatra)

    House/Electronic/Funk/Techno - overplayed at clubs

I do enjoy heavy metal, because it's an offshoot of the guitar-based rock 'n roll that is my first musical love, but not all heavy metal is created equal. Black Sabbath and AC/DC are great; Warrant and Poison...eh, not so much. Of course, it all sounds like noise to non-fans.

Country - thanks but no thanks
As with metal, it varies on an artist-to-artist basis for me. Again, I gravitate towards the classic performers of the past: Hank Williams Sr., Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, and Merle Haggard's records I like. The "modern country" stuff such as Garth Brooks and Kenny Chesney...forget it.

The reasons are kind of like the inverse of my fandom of heavy metal; whereas metal is something like the bastard son of guitar rock, country music is like guitar rock's crazy old grandpa. They're all in the family, I guess.

Highly Experimental (like Radiohead) - Too high brow for me
Sometimes, they are. "High and Dry" was a pretty good pop song, but yeah, most of Radiohead's catalogue bores me.

Manufactured Copycats (like the later boy bands) - a disgrace to the art
Yes, terrible. All of them copied the Jackson Five model with commercial, but not artistic success. The Jackson Five had, you know, real musical talent (especially Michael in his pre-freak days).

faster-paced Classical rock with jazz or swing flavors (like Frank Sinatra)
There's a style of music like that? Sinatra was a pre-rock pop icon. I like a few of his songs, and I like the mid-20th Century vibe that his music creates (it reminds of old gangster movies), but it doesn't move me like rock 'n roll does.

    House/Electronic/Funk/Techno - overplayed at clubs
Yeah...that stuff is OK for dancing, but is worthless for listening. 1970s disco, however, is still enjoyable to listen to even if you're not dancing.

That reminds me, I hate disco. That and bubblegum pop from all generation.

Frank Sinatra is swing style/lounge music, I don't sense any rock in him at all. In fact he predates rock.

Heavy metal - I love it. I'm probably one of the few people here that worships it. I'm not talking about Black Sabbath, though they are great but to me their not heavy enough. Nor am I talking about Motley Crew, Poision, and god I hate them Whitesnake; thats glam metal that kinda blows.
Heavy metal to me are bands like Slayer, Metallica, Cannibal Corpse, Iron Maiden(the greatest), Judas Priest, Pantera, and even the funny but serious Dethlok(my current obsession). I think the screaming/grunting/shouting turn must people off and they complain that there's no vocal melody. But to me, the guitar playing is where the highlight is at.

I love all music besides full-on screamo music.
Sometimes it's hard to love someone because you're so afraid of losing them.

i used to think that i like some music better than others, which still holds true, but now and then you'll hear something good from stuff you don't like. I've heard some good rap songs and i'm very against rapping.. same deal with country music, some of it is pretty good.

i like everything except country. i think almost all music has its merits in some way, from catchy boy band songs to ...megadeth (sp?) ...to aretha franklin... to chopin. but something about those hick country songs...the ones about shoving a boot up someone's bum or ...idk...lynching, i don't like. oh, and girly girl pop....ie twins, avril lavigne, etc.

I had no idea what to call it. I was trying to think of the right description... but it's basically stuff like "The devil went down to Georgia", and the song that plays at the end of every Frasier episode - "Oh baby I hear the blues callin, tossed salad and scambled eggs...."

Anyway, I pretty much don't like that kind of sound.

I hate like music that is "satanic", like slayer, venom, merciful fate, etc. Those guys are poisoning people with that trash, and I know, because I was into it when I was younger. They have no idea how they are hurting others, and influencing others.

I love chinese music, but don't like it when the male singers use that fake, full-bodied voice, with fake emotions. I don't hear it around as much any more, maybe it was a popular sound in the late 80's early 90's. I like natural, whole hearted voices full of emotion, rather than the cheezy full bodied faked-emotions. I can't think of an artist in particular, but I think Jackie Chan may have done some songs that way in the 80's? My friend from H.K. used to drive me crazy with that stuff. Ha Ha.

To be fair, however, it's mostly just an act...theatrics to attract the audience. The musicians involved rarely are authentic believers in all that occult stuff. For the most part, the audience also recognizes that it's just an act...meant for entertainment (like a horror movie) and not to be taken seriously. Now of course, there have been some audience members who have taken it seriously and caused grievous harm to themselves and others as a result, but when that happens, the audience member in question invariably already had serious emotional issues and would likely have done something harmful even without being exposed to the music.

Rap has a lot of meaning depending on which artist it is.
Rap nowadays is not as good back in the 90's and has lost if's flavor

Take for example 2pac he's regarded as one of the best rap lyricist in the genre all the lyrics in his songs come from the heart, it cant get any more meaningful than that. Check it out...IMO 2Pac's greatest album of all time is "All Eyez on Me."

    Another personal favorite is BTnH.

Rap and Hip Hop _CAN_ have heart-felt lyrics, but honestly I don't care if it does. It's the beat that I like. But, that is just me

Bone Thugz most of the time I can't understand what they're saying, but their beat is tight. They have their own unique styel I guess that is the reason why the are so popular.

I know what you mean about the beats in rap song, like for instance that song by Soujah Boy-Supaman that song has corny lyrics he say the same lines over and over again, but the beat is not so bad....

i think the song at the end of Frasier is categorize as blues music... it's sort of having this relax attitude to it... not very common in pop culture now, but there's still supporter of that type of music, i think it was pretty big a few decates ago.
