I agree. I enjoy his movies in the mid 90s much more because they are really funny. My favorites are 家有囍事 All's Well, Ends Well with Maggie Cheung and 整蠱專家 Tricky Brains with Andy Lau.

I guess much of the negative responses came from the American audiences who were not that exposed to wuxia culture and some of the staple icons of wuxia.
Many of the references like the Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu couple, the chinese titles on those books which the beggar flashed at the end etc etc, would end up as lost jokes to a typical Western audience.

I think it's great that so many of us think that different movies of Stephen Chow is his best.
I personally think that The God of Cooking was his best, a mix of his earlier slapstick and a newer mature style.
