When you reply to an email, the system automatically inserts a "Re: " at the beginning of the subject. What does "Re: " stand for exactly?

忽见柳荫下两个小孩子在哀哀痛哭,瞧模样正是武敦儒、武修文兄弟。郭芙大声叫道:「喂,你们在干甚麽?」武 修文回头见是郭芙,哭道:「我们在哭,你不见麽?」
As you have suggested yourself, perhaps it stands for "Reply"?
or perhaps "Read" or "Real email, not spam".

RE - latin word - translation - "[in] the matter of"
“Re” has probably been used in correspondence since before there was correspondence in English.More literally, "by the thing". From the ablative of res ("thing" or "circumstance"). Often used in e-mail replies. It is a common misconception that the "Re:" in correspondence is an abbreviation for regarding or reply; this is not the case. The use of Latin re, in the sense of "about, concerning", is English usage.
To me "Re:" means "Reply to" in emails, whereas for letters it means "Regarding".
Have you learned to love one another?
Re- is short for reply.
Fwd- is short for forward.
I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.
