Default How Mei Niansheng (A Deadly Secret) died still didn't make sense to me

He was the man who mastered Divine Light Skill (神照功), suspected his 3 students ever since he accepted them and taught them useless swordplay, yet he got ambushed by his 3 students and killed.

It just never made sense imo, one of the biggest flaws of 'A Deadly Secret".

Which part has you puzzled? If it's him getting ambushed by his students, even Wuyazi got ambushed by Ding Chunqiu.

The gap between MNS and his 3 students are much bigger than those between WYZ and DCQ.

Not to mention that MNS was AWARE of his 3 students unlike WYZ, or he would'n't have taught them distorted swordplay

As Feng Qingyang famously mentioned, not even the most powerful martial arts is a match for schemes and traps.

The examples run on and on ... Ren Woxing had his position usurped by Dongfang Bubai not through superior martial arts but through intelligence and wit. Yan Nantian, number one sword in the world, was utterly defeated by the traps of the Evil Valley, etc.
    明月心跳起來,又回頭,嫣然道,“你還要不要我帶上那面具?”
    傅紅雪冷道,“現在你臉上豈非已經戴上了個面具?”

If you're going by the novel, I don't believe there's sufficient information to know Mei Niansheng's martial arts level. He was said to be a famous martial artist in his region, but he may or may not have been a prominent national figure. Although he did pass the booklet of Heavenly Glow (神照经) to Ding Dian, it was not known whether he actually mastered or even learned it.

Actually, the main reason I estimate he may not have been that good is exactly b/c he got ambushed by his 3 scrubby students and could not subdue them. He was stabbed in the back by Qi Changfa, but we know that Zhang Sanfeng KO'ed his ambusher in ONE stance after being stabbed. If Mei Niansheng was really several leagues ahead of his students, I too cannot imagine that he would have suffered his fate.

Do we know that Wuyazi didn't suspect Ding Chunqiu? He should be smart enough to detect something fishy. Also, Wuyazi's kung fu IS light years above Ding Chunqiu.

If I remember correctly, MNS was injured when he was ambushed by his 3 students. He didn't teach them his best martial art, DLS skill, but he did taught them decent martial art, definitely not useless.

Agree. There are lot of heroes with great skill that died in the traps and trick of the low martial but cunning villain.

it was the sword skill that was based on the poem that had huge gaps in it. the other skills were decent. the disciples learnt it in order to find the secret treasure.
