Default What's up with FOBs adopting anglicized names?

While I was at uni, that was very rare, but now it appears that 2 out of 3 FOBs (usually students) have an anglocized first name, while they can barely speak English.

What's the point? If it's to make themselves a walking irony, they've achieved it brilliantly.

And their names are usually names that I won't find anyone else having.

I think they probably want to spare the westerners (since they are in a country where the westerners are dominant) from the challenging pronunciation of their ethic names.

It seems to be the vogue, the in-thing. They also tend to be looking for names that will be unique and individual, thus some of the stranger names.

Why would anyone want to deprive themselves of the opportunity to make the fat lazy Westerners work harder???

Cos they don't want their lovely names to be verbally abused. Not only the westerners, but whoever that is outside of their ethic group. That's what I've noticed at my work place, not with my name though.

The pronunciation problem is just one of the possible contributing factors, however.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Well....there was a kid in my Uni days named The-Phuc Nguyen. It later became Phillip. I think it was quite a wise decision.

LOL Thanks for the infor, Buddy! I'm glad the "B" doesn't stand for "Biatches" in Candyman's words.

There was a kid in my middle school named Dat Ho. Not the most ideal name to take to the playground.

getting an anglicized name is already becoming part of the culture of 'fitting into a new environment'...possibly their seniors will advice them to get one as soon as possible, or risk having nobody knowing what to call you (amongst the bunch of inconvinience they might faced)

might have been jotted down in their unofficial survival-handbook.

a number of foreign missionaries (the european clergy) comes to our local community and adopt chinese names. =p but considering that everyone here actually speaks english, nobody really use them. but i figured if they go to a chinese-speaking area, they might get the chance to use it.

That reminds me. I gave a Chinese name to my colleague who is a white guy. It all started when I wanted to piss him off but it appears that he likes the name. His original name is Scott Littlewood, and since he is a relatively young smug, I thought I would name him something cute "小格林".

    小 - Little; small

格 - idea comes from Scott when translated into Chinese = 史

林 - Forest; woods (his last name has the meaning of "Little Forest")

How do you plan to piss him off with that, actually? The name does sounds cute anyway.

She probably thinks he wouldn't like to be called by any name other than his own; but I reckon the guys' pretty thrilled to acquire a Chinese name.

I usually respond well to nicknames n see it as a sign of affection. What I didn't like is, to be called by my real name :-p

It's a joke between us. I have no intention to reveal the details. $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/68.gif')
