I love how it's so obvious who's who in these cartoons.

I love this particular prince outfit. I think it flatters all the actors.

BTW, didn't I tell you many posts earlier I like Han Dong's look in Qing? I remember watching him in Bitter Coffee - he's a very good actor.

Yeah, pretty quick. They started filming December 7, 2010 and it's only March 6th(in China)...so like 3 full months plus some more days left?

That should be YH and Nicky attacking Kevin. I think Nicky was the only one wearing yellow pants, whereas all the other prince were wearing black pants

I just looked him up at Dramawiki: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Han_Dong. He's not that popular huh? Maybe this will be his breakthrough role

Three months filming of time for a 30 odd episode drama is pretty standard, especially when it's not a wuxia drama where there are intense fight scenes. Gong was filmed in only two months.

Pretty sure it's Nicky and YH. I think they are giving Kevin a good bye hug. I'll miss kevin. I'm going to miss all these BTS photos and news.

I think Han Dong's popularity will skyrocket. There's already so many fans looking forward to him and Yutan, and this is only based on the trailers. His 9th is one I'm really looking forward to as well since we don't see 9th much in the novel.

Han Dong has a good role in CCTV's Shui Hu Zhuan (Water Margin) so I'm sure he's already well respected & known in the industry for his acting skills, but not "idol popular" among the younger generation. Idols earn more money than CCTV-type actors anyway.

I saw a discussion earlier whether BBJX is "正剧". Well, I rather they don't go all serious "正剧" on BBJX and make it appealing to people age below 30. E.g. I read that Qiao Jia Da Yuan (喬家大院), a CCTV "正剧" aired in 2006, is the highest-rated drama of all time (all CCTV dramas have good ratings by default since it's the national channel which reaches 1 billion+ people anyway). But have anyone of you heard of Qiao Jia Da Yuan? NO right? Did it make anyone famous? Maybe Shui Ling bcos she's pretty (but she's not an idol anyway) but none of the actors bcos they were all butt ugly (hint: one of them had the great luck to marry Shui Ling). But i must add that Qiao Jia Da Yuan was an extremely good "正剧".

I did say very early on in this thread that Han Dong was pretty good-looking in the Qing bald look, didn't I? Although Nicky didn't grab me until the trailer where he made me swoon!!! (yes, ChineseChik, you have my apologies too!)

Point taken on the false distinction perhaps between zhen ju and idol dramas- it's all about how well made they are, not about how serious they should be. Some of the greatest films are comic and low-budget (I'm thinking Monty Python and, even older, black-and-white classics like Charlie Chaplin). And the primary purpose of any film is to entertain!

But hey Xiao long, take it easy on the "appeal to those below 30"! I'm old but (like to think myself) old doesn't have to mean stodgy. And I'd like to think that "good" drama (zhen ju, idol or whatever!) has broad appeal.

On the flip side, I'll defend the "butt ugly" actors and say that I'm love pretty faces myself (alas!), but I do think there are some awesome actors who I'd have to say are NOT pretty. I'm a big Anthony Hopkins fan... or closer to the Asian market Anthony Wong- both of whom I think are too old to be pretty, but are ultra-cool anyway!

LOL...sorry, I'm really superficial. I like to drool at beautiful men . But thanks for your long exposition on the 4th-Ruoxi-8th love triangle. I have my strong opinions about whether Ruoxi really still harboured romantic feelings for 8th at the end because I felt she was too at ONE with 4th to really have those feelings (or maybe it's just me super enthralled by 4th-Ruoxi ), but will write my own exposition soon. But yes, Anthony Hopkins, Anthony Wong, Sean Connery exude a ultra-cool mature charisma that makes them immensely beautiful. I think 4th & 8th have that similar air of mature charisma that only actors of such stature can handle, but of course *cough* Anthony Wong is far too old (although I'm sure Ruoxi will still fall in love with him ). Very sure about Nicky, but still unsure about Kevin. Qiao Jia Da Yuan's ugly actors didn't have that kind of mature charisma - it was the story that drew people in, totally not the actors.

Anyway, BBJX shouldn't be in the zheng ju category as it's still an Internet novel, although a very wonderful one, and it has a good share of light-hearted moments (see some of LSS' cute expressions? ). I'm confident of Li Guo Li's direction to ensure the adaptation is well made, but yes, it is difficult to translate great novels to the TV screen - so everyone, keep your expectations moderate!!! E.g. Summer's Desire was a very good novel but the inexperienced director hired by Peter Ho (well, he was on a budget at that time) ruined the pacing.

P.S. BBJX keeps reminding me of the Bible's Book of Genesis where Knowledge (from the Tree of Life) led to disaster for the human race. (lesson: never try to know your future!).

ASIDE: Qiao Jia Da Yuan and its sequel, Tian Di Min Xin, were written by another v.famous Qing Dynasty historian, Zhu Xiu Hai. His books can be bought here: http://www.yesasia.com/global/zhu-xi...7-en/list.html

actually i have heard of 喬家大院! lol. it's cause of my parents and the stuff they watch, but still. i was under the impression that it was a very popular drama. and i'm pretty sure it made Chen Jianbin (the guy that did end up marrying shui ling) a lot more famous/popular than he was before (even if he is kinda...ew looking )
and eh. i actually don't find han dong attractive at all. sorry xiao long! although i'll have to see how his acting turns out.
    oh, and apology accepted

Hey I've heard of Qiao Jia Da Yuan (喬家大院) as well. Didn't watch it myself but my grandma certainly did. haha.

Aw... Don't be mean to 正剧. There's actually some that are very well made, despite the lack of "good looking" idols. My favorites include: Han Wu Da Di/汉武大帝, Zhen Guan Zhi Zhi/贞观之治 (yah this one will bore all ya'll socks off, but I loved Ma Yue as Li ShiMin! ) and of course Yong Zheng Wang Chao/雍正王朝.

And I confess I'm often totally swept away by a actor's charisma rather than good looks (not to say I don't like some good old hansome men ). I guess I'm just weird that way . For example, I was totally more into Chen Dao Ming's character than Huang Xiao Ming's in Da Han Tian Zi/大汉天子. I also don't think 正剧 are any less popular than these idol dramas. I think they feel that way simply because their target demographic aren't really vocal online and tends not to talk about it 24/7 in real life either.

And everyone needs to keep their expectation down for the love scenes. Lol. I think it'll be sweet and romantic but I have a feeling it'll be toned down because it's for TV. Really looking forward to the boat scene though.

I really like this interview, LSS is so adorable:

The interviewer asks if there was anything fun or interesting during filming, LSS replies (around 42 sec):

LSS: "This is the first time I've met a 4th prince that can cry so well/much" *laughter*
    Interviewer: "Really??!? 4th prince??"
Lss: "Yah. 4th can really cry."
    interview: "Ehhh??!"

She also mentions that this is the first time where she felt (during acting) the feeling between the characters is very real.

Video Highlights: Nicky (very short clips of them behind the scenes...don't blink, you'll miss them )

How cute!!!! I wished Nicky was there when she said that Sounds like they have great offscreen chemistry...hopefully they carried that chemistry onscreen

IDK why, this pic is so candid and not exactly well taken, but I think this is one of Nicky's hunkiest looks! The Qing hair with the bad boy biker jacket...woah!

LOL...Xiaolong. Yes, Chen Jianbin (Shui Ling's husband) is an established serious actor-type. He was Cao Cao in Three Kingdoms and the lead in many CCTV dramas despite his "ew looking" face. I enjoyed Qiao Jia Da Yuan and its sequel Tian Di Min Xin (where YH was in) - both are based on very respected novels by a famous Qing historian. In fact, many CCTV dramas have higher ratings than Gong or CP, but of course it depends on who's watching and how the PR folks embellish a series' popularity (idol drama producers tend towards misleading over-hype). The fanbase for CP/Gong idol dramas are the Y-Gen group who are very vocal online. Qiao Jia Da Yuan and Tian Di Min Xin were followed by the older generation.

I've the feeling they are looking to strike a balance with BBJX - while not alienating Tangren's current idol fan, it's an opportunity to diversify their fan base and gain viewers outside of wuxia/RPG.

And yes, even as a guy, I really like that picture of Nicky. I was all for his casting from the beginning as he has this really cool charisma like a mature James Dean . From the trailer, Nicky & LSS will definitely have great chemistry onscreen!
