AHHHHHHHHHH!!! Just caught up with the thread. Have been so busy recently that I haven't even been logging into Weibo, much more stalking Handong on his Weibo. *_*

Anyway, I doubt BBJX would be banned in China. Perhaps the new productions would be stemmed, hopefully Gong 2 won't even make it to filming stage, although there are whispers that it's gonna start filming in July-August time.

The ban will affect approvals for future productions of time travelling series. C-dramas need prior authorization to start filming. BBJX has long been approved and already filmed, so it will definitely air. It all depends on when. The ban may affect the timing of BBJX's broadcast date and which station it will debut.

Bad news guys, we probably won't be seeing anymore trailers for the time being. This is what Karen Tsoi replied on her weibo:

She's basically saying (due to the SARFT announcement) that they have be more low key for the time being. So no trailers.

Personally I'm fine with no trailers. I'd rather not have everything spoiled for me before the drama comes out. I'm just hoping that when BBJX does come out, it's not forced to be edited by the SARFT and hacked to pieces. I also hope it won't be delayed either =(.

Either that or I'll just have to wait for the HK or Taiwan version, which probably won't be censored and edited. But I hate waiting!! >.<"

Not sure how BBJX's investors can recoup the RMB100 million investment if it can't get aired in a top major TV station like Jiangsu TV (which previously aired CP3) due to the negative stance against time travel. But government-owned Bank of Beijing is also an investor, so do hope they would have the clout to get through the obstacles.

I wonder if the ban will affect filming of HG & LSS' upcoming game series Tian Zhi Hen, since that has a heavy dosage of mythological references.

No airing date has been set. Before the ban was announced, Tangren was targeting July. Now not sure if that has changed. Also no news of which TV station it will debut.

So weird...I'm reading that BBJX is being classified as sci-fi. You'd think BBJX's time travel is to do with reincarnation (going into the body of one of your past lives), but now it's sci-fi. Heheh!

Thanks for the translation Plushie! The reasoning for the regulation/banning seems like one big contradiction. Chinese culture and values DO include "archaic superstitions, destiny talk, and reincarnation". Supersitions are pan-cultural, destiny is a reoccurring feature in the majority of ancient cultures, reincarnation is an inherent part of Buddhist philosophy (Buddhism being one of the major belief systems in the Chinese culture). I do wonder if people who publish these statements have done their homework!

Chinese culture =/= good culture. One of the biggest things in modern China is the idea of the anti-feudal values, which means elimination of superstition, rituals, etc. This has led to good things like the elimination of the ridiculous foot-binding rule and the promotion of gender equality. Unfortunately, it also tends to be indiscriminate and has eroded a lot of great traditional cultures adnd values.

I think the whole issue has just been blown out of proportion. What appears to be cases of very poor quality plots and/or editing of some productions, has been used as an excuse to introduce limiting measures to film production. Simple as that.

There have been far more terrible historical dramas than Gong. Ex. My Bratty Princess, which was pretty wellreceived, was not only completely historically inaccurate, but had totally wacko clothing. At least Gong got the clothes fairly right. It's entirely unfair to target Yu Zheng for that just because he got more popular.

The real problem, imo, is the fact that for the first three months of 2011, Hunan TV beat CCTV in viewership, and SARFT makes rules against whatever Hunan TV does that's popular. Just think of the gazillion new rules made after every Super Girls competition...

(A) Whatever body governs media productions in China needs to re-evaluate criteria for quality evaluation
(B) Investors need to quit investing in Yu Zheng productions (I'd be shocked if Yu Zheng is singularly as wealthy as Hua Yi brothers)

How can you ask for more regulation and then ask the government not to interfere? The only way for the entertainment industry grow is through a market-driven economy. It already is one of the most regulated industries, it doesn't need more. As long as Yu Zheng's dramas increase viewership, popularize actors, he's contributing to the industry. His productions, by their popularity, also feeds people like his amazing costume designers, set designers, actors and cinematographers.
Yu Zheng's drama may not be the best that China has, but at least his dramas being popular contributes more to the industry than imported kdramas that fills up most channels' primetime spot otherwise.

Don't forget that a majority of artists who work for Yu Zheng also works for Tangren - Yang Mi, Tong Liya, Ady An, etc.... and the two definitely benefits each other in cross-promotions.

Nicky's been really active in China the past year and a half. Not only has he been acting, he even started his own production company, Nicky Wu Studio, last year and his maiden TV production, "The Perfect Husband", has been sold to China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea.
