The Mandate RPG Discussion Thread

The Central Plains, divided by the collapse of the Han Dynasty and the strife of power-hungry warlords on the quest for the Mandate of Heaven, have now emerged four powerful states of Xiang, Pan, Xiwu and Donghai.

The state of Pan, though mutually protected by its alliance with Xiang, is nonetheless fatigued by frequent border incursions from Xiwu. The old Pan King died of overexertion and his eldest son, the Prince of Pan, having ascended the Throne, decided to broker a peace deal with Xiwu by marrying the eldest Xiwu Princess and offering a handsome dowry as tribute.

The Xiwu King accepted the proposal and the Xiwu Princess and her entourage have now arrived at the Pan capital. Unbeknownst to all, the bride's younger sister Yue Jiayan has arrived together with the entourage disguised as a maid...

You can just cut straight to introduce your characters. I think that's better.

Are we going to use different threads for different settings? Or make it one gigantic hot pot?

I... don't like hot pots for rpg...

OK, so I just begin Chapter 1 with Yue Jiayan arriving at where's-the-Pan-capital with the entourage and start eliminating their competing concubines as a housewarming party? I think I will either leave Yue Jiayan and the Xiwu King's secret conspiracy to a flashback scene or just let the readers infer from the plot. LOL

(Actually I also feel shy about starting a thread to a story where I'm playing a supporting role - that of the villian, again...)

Awesome...so is the capital of pan the main setting in our story?the only rpg I have ever been in had a hot pot thread, and that worked well for me because it gave me a good sense of chronology of events. But you guys are more experienced than me with rpg so please teach along the way if we have different threads for different setting. Just not too many threads please.

Actually, sometimes I find it harder to keep the chronology intact with a hotpot thread if there are multiple side plots b/c not every story will progress at the same rate .

so what's the main focus of the story so far.....

I don't want my character to be the philandering type

despite losing his wife, I want him to be a reasonably happy character. He'll try not to pay any attention to the girls in the story (to respect his deceased wife)....but maybe someone will cause him to swoon later on :P

It seems as though Allen and I have a formula for our main characters...I like to have my characters cross dress in the beginning of the story and allen's characters start off with a deceased significant other.

I don't think we have much set except for what has been revealed in the characters' background. Seems like the bulk of the action will take place in pan with the winning kingdom belonging to xiwu in the end (not set in stone). For the most part, we have been joking around about the power struggle between the pan consorts partiially as a subplot and partially for comic relief. Someone else correct me if I am wrong.

And ok, multiple threads for our story it is...perhaps I will find it easier to follow the story too.

is this gonna be more realistic than the last one also? some of the stuff in the last game got pretty crazy. but i'm good either way. i prefer more fantastical myself

I don't know if it will be more realistic....but it seems that we have very committed players so far. Also, with the amount of drafting we have going on, I think we will more likely end this rpg faster than the previous one and also have closure for most of the characters.
