I've been meaning to ask this for a long time but always forget it after I finish the chapter ...

Fei fei always been calling Xiao Hei "mixed hairy bird" ... don't you think it's weird to call a bird hairy? I mean birds don't have hairs right? they got feathers ... shouldn't it be mixed feathery bird instead? I don't know if the word feathery even exist it's just weird to call a bird hairy ....

I've also wondered about this. Was there an explanation we missed?

In chinese, feather and hair are pronounced the same way so that was probably a direct translation.

Also, you generally don't use "more" with adjectives ending in -ier. It's happier or more happy, but not more happier. So I wouldn't say "much more haughtier." Either haughtier or much more haughty.

I like "stuffs" because it is Hou Fei saying it. I always imagine him to speak in a more silly way and having bad grammar every now and then, especially when he is excited.

If it were Qin Yu or Uncle Lan I'd agree that that stuffs should be changed into something more formal sounding.

Yeah, 杂毛 is a sort of insulting way to refer to kids who have mixed parentage, i.e. one Chinese parent and one white, so maybe it's being used in that way...

That's possible, I suppose, but I think the 'mixed heritage' more comes from the character 杂 as in 杂种; combined with the 毛 character, I really can't see 杂毛 as being a reference to parentage, especially when neither Hou Fei nor Hei Yu know about their parentage. But translator's choice.

In the earlier description of Xiao Hei, his feathers at the crown was golden in color and the rest of is black. Perhaps, this 杂毛 is in reference to this mix of color in his feathers and not to his parentage. I am not sure if his various transformations had changed this look but I suspect Hou Fei was just teasing him about his appearance.

I agree with LuDongBin about Hou Fei's main intent in teasing Xiao Hei's appearance.
My guess is that the "mixed hairy" label would also be about his mixed up coloring.

Both of them are orphans of unknown parentage.
Hou Fei at least knows his breed, and is proud of it.
Xiao Hei's breed is unknown, so his unusual coloring might be a clue.
Hou Fei is very literal and straight forward.
His teasing Xiao Hei would be about what's obvious at first glance.
Strength & Power are important to Hou Fei, and parentage doesn't matter.
He probably wouldn't find it fun to tease Xiao Hei about heritage... and probably wouldn't even think of it.

My guess about the nickname, is that it's a shortened version of "Mixed Colored Feathers Bird".

I translated 杂毛 as mixed hairy because I feel that it has a double meaning. In an earlier book, XH was said to be a bird of mixed race by a normal eagle. Hou Fei is at least a high class divine beast so he should be able to tell that XH is of mixed race. So, he may be having a dig at XH's origin when calling him 杂毛鸟 (杂毛 can also mean 'mongrel' http://www.ichacha.net/杂毛.html). Xh has a patch of golden feathers on his head so 杂毛 may also refer to the fact that his plumage is a blend of different colors. And I chose 'hairy' instead of 'feathery/feathered' because it sounds more derogatory and childish.
