A few questions about the ads:
a. some ads launch a separate tab (chrome user). Others (like iherb) launch the ad within the reading page.
Linking error or hardcoded by the advertisers?

b. since I want to avoid losing my place in the story, I prefer to mid-button-click the ad, to launch the ad in a separate tab. Do such clicks count?

I suspect that RWX had somehow subscribed to a low end maybe free CDN service and from traffic & advertisement analysis, the CDN may have deemed your service successful enough to DDOS... This scheme is like an open secret in the CDN & net security business... They create a problem for you, forcing you to mitigate it with $$$$.... He should be getting a lot of offers by now... Anyhow, he somehow must had been feeding private website stats to someone, might be a "rogue" plugin and/or your CDN provider itself...

In in the future I hope RWX is more careful what services he use and plugins he install on his site and who he shares his site stats with... Always install opensource plugins. Smart people have a test VM server they use to test changes with BEFORE deployment on their website...
