Love how you ended this chapter. LHC's drinking got him into a sticky situation. There's got to be a moral in there somewhere.

    Let them make the choice

Zuo Lengshan sat cross legged in an opened field with his eyes closed and his open hands resting on his knees. A large trench had been dug in a five foot radius around him and a group of his apprentices began filling it with charcoal. When the trench was sufficiently filled the apprentices started adding tinder to ensure that the charcoal would catch fire easily.

Throughout this whole time the Master of Mount Song remained perfectly still with the only indication of life being the gentle rise and fall of his chest. When the apprentices had finished their task they went to Deng Bagong who was standing several feet away supervising them. Dismissing the apprentices the Mount Song elder picked up a lit torch that had been planted in the ground and hurled it into the trench.

The flames soon caught and before long a roaring inferno surrounded Zuo Lengshan. The fire was so intense that Deng Bagong, who had backed away to over twenty feet, could still feel the heat on his face and was forced to step even further back. Deng Bagong could not see his martial arts brother through the raging curtain of fire and felt a sick sense of dredge creep over him. Perhaps this hadn't been such a good idea after all.

Despite being surrounded by flames that should have reduced him to ash, Zuo Lengshan seemed completely unaffected by the heat. In fact if one could get close enough they would have noticed that the shallow breaths of the Master of Mount Song came out in puffs of steam as if he was in the middle of a snow storm. Even more amazingly the ground between him and the inferno was covered be a thin layer of frost which like the man seemed immune to the fire.

Zuo Lengshan's eyes snapped open and a wave of incredible cold cascaded down from his body and quickly spread towards the ring of fire. The flames were smothered the moment the wave hit them and soon the once red hot charcoal became blocks of solid ice. Zuo Lengshan's face split into a predatory smile satisfied with the results. His Freezing Inner Energy had reached a new level, thus ensuring that he would emerge victorious in the upcoming gathering on the Spring Solstice.

He had spent years planning this and finally everything was falling into place. South Mount Heng and Mount Tai were within his power, leaving only Mount Hua and North Mount Heng to challenge him. He had long dismissed Yue Buqun as a threat but Linghu Chong was another matter. Their encounter at Shaolin had planted the seeds of doubt in Zuo Lengshan's mind. Perhaps he should take steps to ensure that the young upstart did not arrive at Mount Song?

Turning to Deng Bagong he summoned the Mount Song elder forward then gave him instructions to ensure the fulfilment of his ambitions.

Bujie smiled as he crested the hill and his home came into view. Despite carrying several very heavy bundles the man picked up his step as hurried to his destination. Stepping through the front door he saw his wife. She was a small woman with a lean figure and her face full of winkles indicating that the fifty years that she had lived were years of hardship. But her eyes shone with joy and her complexion was healthy showing that these had also been years of happiness.

In contrast her husband was a big burly man with a thick grey-black beard and clean shaven head. The couple could not have looked more different but the warmth as they embraced spoke of the love between them:

“It feels good to be home.” said Bujie.

As always his wife remained silent but she tightened her arms around her husband showing that she shared the joy of his homecoming. Holding his wife at arms length Bujie reached into his chest and produced a small bundle which he passed to her. His wife's face lit up as she opened it to find a blue scarf with golden flowers embroidered on it. Bujie looked around then turned to his wife:

    “Where's our daughter?”

Taking his hand his wife lead him to the back garden where a woman was placing some flowers in front of a grave. The woman had her back to the couple, but her slender figure could be made out even through the rough hemp dress. The posture of the woman was that of a someone who was young and healthy. The tombstone had the characters “Beloved daughter Liù Mingzhū” engraved on it.

As Bujie looked at the grave a familiar sense of sadness filled his heart. Despite the passage of nearly three decades he could still remember the events which had lead to the daughter's death and his wife's loss of her tongue. Back then he had been known as the “Phantom Monk” a name which had struck fear into every wrongdoer that heard it. He was respected by the honourable martial artists and praised by the common people.

But all this fame came at a price, for he had made many enemies in his fight against injustice. These enemies did not have the courage to attack him directly so they had targeted his family instead. When he was away from home they had abducted his pregnant wife and taken their revenge on the helpless woman.

Bujie with the help of his friends had found his wife, but the abuse she had suffered meant that she had loss both her child and her powers of speech. Bujie had made his enemies pay dearly for what they had done and not one of them had taken less than a day to die. Since that fateful day Bujie had left the martial arts world behind, dedicating himself to the wife and child he had failed to protect.

The young woman heard the couple enter the garden and turned to greet them with a dazzling smile. Bujie's depressing mood vanished as he looked upon the wonderful face of his adopted daughter and offered his silent thanks to Heaven for giving him and his wife another chance at the joys of parenthood.

Xiao Bai sat in front of her bedroom mirror and fixed the wooden hairpin her adopted father had given her into place. It was a piece of jewellery of little monetary worth, but was a heartfelt gift and she felt grateful for having it. Her fingers ran down her face and traced the scar running down her left cheek. The scar ran along her jawline to about the length and width of her little finger. Although not deep it was still noticeable.

She knew that she should have been grateful that this was the only memento from her fall, but she couldn't stop bitterness entering her heart. Like most beautiful people she was also vain and took the blemish on her otherwise flawless features very hard. It was partially due to this that she had resisted seeing Linghu Chong for so long.

Her fall from the mountain had been cushioned by the branches of a great tree, but the impact was still so strong that it would have killed a normal person. Thankfully her strong constitution and the Qi surrounding her internal organs had protected her from the worst of the injuries, but even so she had loss consciousness for nearly half a month. It was only by good fortune that Bujie had stumbled upon her and taken her home where he had his wife had tended to her.

For a while she hovered between life and death until on the twelfth day her eyes had finally opened. Although alive she was still very weak and took another ten days before she had a measure of her old strengt back. During this time Bujie and his wife had taken care of her as if she was their own daughter. Soon Xiao Bai had developed a close bond with the kindly couple and when Bujie offered to adopt her she was only to happy to accept.

Three nights ago Xiao Bai had given into temptation and sneaked into the Mount Heng nunnery to catch a glimpse of her lover. This was a decision she would come to regret, for having arrived at the nunnery late in the night she had spied Linghu Chong in one of the gardens playing the guqin. Every note seemed to tug at Xiao Bai's heartstrings for they echoed the pain and longing she felt.

Just as her resolve was weakening and she was about to reveal herself to him a flute could be heard. The tune perfectly complemented the mood created by Linghu Chong and the combination of both instruments made Xiao Bai think of two lonely swallows meeting upon the open sky. The flute player walked into the garden and Xiao Bai suppressed a gasp as she recognized Yingying.

Yingying walked swiftly to Linghu Chong's side and gently kissed him on the forehead to which he responded with a sad smile. Xiao Bai's sadness was washed away by a murderous rage, but somehow she stayed her hand and continued watching them. Linghu Chong talked with Yingying for a few moments then indicated that they should retire to bed. Luckily for them, they had each gone to their separate rooms, otherwise it would have been extremely unlikely that Xiao Bai would have been able to restrain herself.

She followed Linghu Chong to his room intending to ask him what happened to his professed undying love for her. But as she peered through a gap in the window she found her answer. Sitting at the table was Linghu Chong and in his hand he clutched her ribbon. The pain and loss on his face dosed the flames of anger in Xiao Bai's heart and smothered all thoughts of murder:

“I am sorry Xiao Bai. If I could go back to that night I would choose death over betraying you. I know there is nothing I can say to justify what I did and I cannot hope for your forgiveness. But please wait for me. I promise that as soon as I have married Yingying and done my duty to her, I will join you in the afterlife to accept whatever punishment you might have.

Please wait for me and don't drink the blind lady's tea.”

Linghu Chong spoke his words to the ribbon unaware that his confession was being heard by Xiao Bai. Outside his room Xiao Bai wept silently into the palm she clamped around her mouth. So he hadn't forgotten her and was only with Yingying in order to take responsibility for a night of passion. This was so like her silly hero and one of the reasons she loved him so much.

For a moment she wanted to burst through the doors and throw herself into his arms, but she couldn't. He was honoured bound to Yingying and Xiao Bai knew how much honour meant to a man like him. If she was to reveal herself to him she knew he would abandon Yingying but the guilt and dishonour would haunt him to his dying day. She could not bare to do that to him.

But if she didn't tell him about her survival then he might just be silly enough to kill himself in the hope of seeing her in the next world. There was only one person who could help her with this dilemma. Quickly she headed for the guest quarters hoping that he hadn't left.

    ####

Bai Xuesheng was in his room practising calligraphy when he detected footsteps outside his door. The steps were as light as falling leaves and even his heightened senses nearly missed them. Whoever was out there had a level of Qi energy that rivalled his own:

“Please come in my honoured guest” he said without looking up from his writing.

The door opened and when Bai Xuesheng looked up the brush fell from his hand and his eyes widened in surprised. Gently he whispered “Xiao Bai”.

    ####

“You have to tell him!” declared Bai Xuesheng

“I can't, it would destroy him to make such a choice.” replied Xiao Bai as she blinked back her tears.

“You can't take away his right to know.”

“Trust me I know what's best. It's better that one person suffers than three people do.”

Bai Xuesheng took a deep breath keeping his own rising anger in check. Always he had thought his friend to be one of the most intelligent person he had ever known but now she was proposing something monumentally stupid. He wanted to grab her by the shoulders and shake some sense into her. But he knew this would be counter productive. Dongfang Bai was not someone you could treat that way. When he was sure he wouldn't say something he would regret he continued:

    “What about Xiao Cuì?”

“I'll let her know I am alive when Chong Ge and Yingying are married. But you must promise me you will make sure he doesn't do anything silly.”

“Like what you are doing now?”

“Please snowflake, if our friendship means anything to you then you will do this for me.”

Bai Xuesheng let out a sigh of defeat. Xiao Bai knew that he always fond it difficult to refuse her when she used his nickname:

“Sometimes I truly wonder why we became friends.” Bai Xuesheng said the words with a frown of frustration, but he did agree to her request.

    ####

Yingying turned in her bed trying to ignore the frustration in her heart. Ever since that one night of intimacy Linghu Chong had been strangely withdrawn towards her. He was very respectful when in her company, but it was the respect a brother would show his sister. She had implied that she was willing to continuing their physical relationship and knew that he understood her offer, but he had pretended that he didn't.

Yingying didn't let the hurt she felt at his rejection show, but she knew the reason for his continued refusal of her. He still had feelings for that witch. Yingying's pride would not let her be jealous of a dead woman, so instead she had convinced herself that she would make him forget her once they were married. After all she had a whole lifetime to make him love her.

Knowing that sleep would not come, she got out of bed and picked up her flute. The music she played floated like the song of the nightingale on the wind.

    ####

Bai Xuesheng and Dongfang Cuì walked thought the bamboo forest hand in hand:

“Is Jiě Jiě really still alive?!”

“She came to me last night.”

    “Where is she?”

“She's staying in a small cottage not to far away, but we can't see her yet.”

    “Why?”

Bai Xuesheng recounted his conversation with Dongfang Bai and Xiao Cuì shook her head:

    “We must tell Linghu Dage.”

“You know your sister. If she thinks we have told Linghu Chong she would flee and none of us will ever see her again.”

“So what are we going to do?”

“I was hoping you could come up with something.”

For nearly an hour they walked in silence each lost in their own thought, then Bai Xuesheng came to a stop and cocked his head to one side. Turning sharply he saw a man on horseback come riding towards them. The man stopped a respectful distance away then dismounting he knelt at Bai Xuesheng's feet:

“My Lord I bring an urgent message” said the man as he handed an envelope to Ba Xuesheng.

Opening the envelope Bai Xuesheng read quickly:

    “My Lord,

Our spies at Mount Song have reported that Zuo Lengshan has engaged the services of the Four Deaths of Mount Kunlun to dispose of Linghu Chong. Our people are trailing the Four Deaths and we await your orders.

    Your humble servant Tai Zhong.”

It seems that Zuo Lengshan is taking the threat of Linghu Chong very seriously, for the Four Deaths are amongst the deadliest assassins in the Martial Arts world and famous for always fulfilling their contracts no matter how underhanded the means.

A small smile played on Bai Xuesheng's lips and he turned to his lover:

“Xiao Cuì, I have a plan. But I need you help.”

As Xiao Cuì listened to his plan her brow started to knit in concern and when he had finished she stared at him in wide-eyed disbelief at the audacity of his proposal.

Yóu Dà turned to his brother Yóu Zhì as they rode at the head of their men. The elder of the Yóu brothers was cautious yet confident that they could safely deliver their cargo of five thousand pieces of gold to their destination, for siblings reputation in the escort business had rivalled that of the Lin family. Even so Yóu Dà had taken the precaution of taking fifty of their best men with him on this mission, just in case.

As they crested a hill Yóu Dà strung his famous phoenix bow when he saw their path blocked by two men. One man was unremarkable with everything about him, from height, looks and build being completely average. He carried a bamboo stick in his hand which he leaned against as a walking-stick.

His companion by contrast would have stood out in any crowd. Well over six feet tall and with shoulders almost as broad as Yóu Dà's horse he looked more like a living hill than a man. Yóu Dà called a halt the moment the men were within a bow shot and secretly gestured to his brother to prepare for battle. The smaller of the two men shouted a greeting:

“Do we have the pleasure of addressing the famous Yóu brothers.”

“I am Yóu Dà, may I knows sir's name.”

“That won't be necessary. I do however have a business proposal for you.”

“Oh, and what might that be?”

“I propose you handover your cargo and in exchange we will let you keep your lives.” The man spoke the words in a completely calm voice as if he was making the most reasonable request in the world.

Yóu Zhì charged forward with an enraged battle cry, the twin sabres that had been strapped to his saddle seeming to leap into his hand. The younger Yóu brother's horse was covering the distance between him and the giant at breakneck speed and would have been upon the man in a few heartbeats. Something even swifter than the galloping horse flew pass Yóu Zhì and went straight for the spot between the eyes of the giant's companion.

There was a flash of steel and Yóu Dà froze in shock. The arrow he had loosed had been neatly sliced in half by the blade that had appeared in the man's hand. Yóu Dà recovered quickly and prepared another arrow, but even as he did so Yóu Zhì had met his opponent.

Controlling his horse with his thighs the younger Yóu brother steered his mount to the left of the giant aiming to slash his throat as he passed. Moving with a speed that seemed at odds with his bulk the giant strode in front of the charging horse and struck the beast on the head with his mighty fist. Yóu Zhì was thrown forward as his horse's neck crumpled into its shoulders from the impact, but Yóu Zhì had kept his wits. Using the momentum of his flight he brought both sabres down on the giant's head intending to split it like a melon.

Blood trickled down the hilts of his blades as the sabres shattered against the marble hard flesh of the giant, but Yóu Zhì barely felt the pain as the giant had clamped a massive hand around his throat and was slowly choking him to death. Yóu Zhì struggled but to no avail, then tried to cry out to his brother for help.

Yóu Dà however was in no position to help his brother for the swordsman was heading towards him. The man moved at an unhurried pace giving Yóu Dà what should have been an easy target. But no matter how fast his arrows flew each and everyone was sliced neatly in half the moment they got within range of that accursed sword. As the man got closer Yóu Dà started to panic and fumbled with his arrows. His fingers felt like they were twice their normal size and infinitely more clumsy. Seeing their leaders in trouble the other men drew their weapons.

No sooner had their blades left the sheaths then a loud squawk, like that of a gigantic bird of prey diving in for the kill, was heard above their heads. The men looked up to see a solitary figure fly by, releasing a fine white powder upon them. Men and horses screamed as the powder touched flesh, for it burnt like acid and soon most of the men fell to the ground clawing at their melting flesh.

Only a handful of men managed to avoid the deadly powder but they were soon set upon by the giant how had despatched Yóu Zhì. Huge hands crushed skulls like eggs or broke necks like dry twigs. Men stabbed desperately at the impenetrable skin as they fought for their lives, but it was no use and soon only two men were left. Despite being seasoned warriors, the carnage they had just witnessed was to much for them and they fled into the woods leaving Yóu Dà to his fate.

Yóu Dà had his last arrow notched in the bow but dared not draw it as the swordsman was right in front of him and gently stroking the head of his horse. Staring up at Yóu Dà the man had a look of great disappointment:

“Why do people never take my offers?” he said in a sad voice.

These were the last words Yóu Dà heard as his head parted company with the rest of his body.

    ####

The survivors of Yóu Dà's men fled deep into the woods, running for all they were worth. As they reached a clearing they saw a young woman sitting there playing with her hair. She looked to be in her mid twenties with a sweet disarming face. As the men got closer she turned to greet them with an angelic smile. Despite their perilous situation the men were charmed by the girl and walked further into the clearing.

Too late they discovered the trap as thin silk wires invisible to the naked eye sliced through their ankles and sent them tumbling to the ground with horrified screams. The girl got up and started walking towards the crippled men. As she got closer the men could see her licking her lips in anticipation of slaking her hunger.

    ####

Negotiator concealed his sword back in the bamboo stick and waved to Black Widow as she emerged from the woods, sucking the last drops of blood from her fingertips. The giant called Child and the poison expert named Night Moth stood beside the cart containing their prize. The ironically named giant making sure his companion kept to their arrangement that all loot be shared equally between all of them.

“I should have never let you talk me into this.” Complained Negotiator as Black Widow took his hand and lead him to the cart.

“Oh don't be like that. It only delayed us a little bit and now we have over a thousand pieces of gold each.” replied the girl.

As the four of them surrounded the cart Night Moth hurriedly opened it. Sunlight danced of the precious metal and all of them were lost in their greed at the sight of so much gold. So dazzled were the four that they failed to notice the sound of flint striking against flint or the distinct smell of gunpowder until it was to late. The cart exploded sending red hot lumps of gold in every direction.

Black Widow died with fragments of gold buried deep in her innocent face while Night Moth had the front of this body ripped away by the explosion. Negotiator had leapt backwards as the cart exploded. Drawing his sword in the same movement he had knocked away every piece a debris that came near him. Child was not as swift but was able to activate his Iron-shirt technique and so also escaped injury.

Clapping came from the woods and a man emerged. The two remaining Deaths of Mount Kunlun turned to face him. Bai Xuesheng smiled as he spoke:

“Impressive. I expected to kill all four of you with that trap.” their was genuine admiration in the words which both scared and enraged the men.

Child let out a deranged battle-cry and charged. As he loomed over Bai Xuesheng he brought both of his colossal fists down intending to crush the little man. Bai Xuesheng raised his arms above his head and caught the fists in his open palms. The look of berserker rage died on Child's face as he found his mighty blow stopped. For several moments Child strained against Bai Xuesheng. Muscles bulged as the giant tried to crush his foe with his immense strength and weight, but Bai Xuesheng didn't budge nor did the pleasant smile leave his lips.

Then Child felt his limbs shaking uncontrollably and a great pressure build up in his head. Sweat stung his eyes and Child tried to blink them away. To his horror he found that it was not sweat but blood tricking from his eyes and not just his eyes. His mouth, nose and ears all started gushing blood out. The giant started swaying like a chopped tree then fell on his back as he drowned in his own blood.

Negotiator looked at his fallen comrade and then at his killer who was walking calmly towards him:

“That's the 'Pole Switching Palm'. You are from the Bai family!” declared the assassin.

“Good, at least you won't die an ignorant ghost.”

Negotiator readied his sword as the man got closer. He forced himself to relax and focus. In his mind's eye he predicted half a dozen move the man was going to perform and came up with as many ways to counter them. This he did in the time it took to blink an eye. But the man made none of the moves he had planned for, instead he kept walking slowly towards him. Negotiator was starting to get worried for his entire style depended on his opponent attacking thus allowing him to intercept. What Bai Xuesheng was doing made such a tactic impossible.

Finally when Bai Xuesheng was only a couple of feet away Negotiator's nerves snapped and he lunged. Bai Xuesheng's palm moved at the same time and Negotiator's sword shattered into a hundred pieces on the Qi enforced flesh. The shattered metal flew into Negotiator's flesh burying themselves deep into his body. As the assassin fell to his knees his life blood bleeding out of him he managed to whisper:

    “Who are you?”

    “Bai Xuesheng.”

A smile appeared on the man's lip as he died with the knowledge of knowing he had died at the hands of so worthy an opponent.

    Honour

Bai Xuesheng watched as his men took away the corpses. The Yóu brothers and their men were being taken to the local embalmers to be given a proper burial while the Four Deaths would be left to the scavengers. Normally Bai Xuesheng would have left as soon as his instructions had been made, but for reasons he couldn't understand he felt the need to stay and make sure the Yóu brothers were being treated correctly.

He had commissioned the transportation of the gold in order to gather the Four Deaths in one place, for he knew that if he confronted them directly they would have scattered and he would have spent years chasing them down. This was the most direct and efficient way for him to achieve his goal. A year ago he would not have thought twice about using such a method, after all the Yóu brothers knew the dangers in the life they had chosen and so the blame for their deaths could not be laid at Bai Xuesheng's feet.

However the deaths of so many men sat heavily with him. Could he had found some other way? If he had shown up earlier could he had saved at least some of them? Bai Xuesheng shook his head trying to clear away these disturbing thoughts. He wondered where these strange feelings were coming from? But deep down he knew the answer.

Just as his and Xiao Bai's presence had made Dongfang Cui stronger and more confident, they to were being changed by her. Xiao Bai was discovering her caring and maternal side as she strove to protect her younger sister. While Bai Xuesheng was starting to find his ruthlessness being curbed. No longer could he sacrifice innocent lives without contemplating what effect this might have on their loved ones.

He realized now that he had been able to do this in the pass because he had depended on no one and had no one depending on him. Yes he was the Head of a powerful family, but the family was strong enough to survive without him. This had allowed him to be reckless with himself and so by extension other people as well. But now he had someone who truly needed him and whom he truly needed. Gone were the days of throwing caution to the wind and he was not sure if this was a good thing or not.

Pushing the thought aside he prepared the next stage of his plan.

    ####

As Xiao Bai was clearing away the wild grass around Mingzhū's grave, her mind started to wonder. Xuesheng had told her of his plan to go and intercept the Four Deaths before they could reach Mount Heng and while she had every confident in her friend's abilities she couldn't help worrying. The Four Deaths were dangerous opponent and accidents could happened. All that was needed was for Xuesheng to loose concentration for a moment and that would be the end of him.

Xiao Bai knelt before the grave and talked to the sister she never knew:

“Jie Jie, please give Xuesheng your blessing and let him return unharmed.”

“Xiao Bai, there's trouble at the nunnery!” shouted Bujie as he ran into the garden.

    “What trouble father?!”

    “Xiao Cui. Has been kidnapped.”

Xiao Bai had told her adopted father about her sister and friends at Mount Heng as well as the reasons why she didn't want to return the nunnery, when Bujie had caught her crying in her room. Her adopted father had been so kind and comforting that she couldn't resist the urge to unburden herself on him. Bujie had made the same suggestion as Bai Xuesheng, but Xiao Bai had been adamant that she would never see Linghu Chong again.

In the end Bujie had given into her wishes, but offered to sneak into the nunnery to gather news on Linghu Chong and Xiao Cui. Despite her convictions not to see them, Xiao Bai desperately wanted to know that her loved ones were safe and so had agreed:

    “By whom?”

    “The Four Deaths of Kunlun”

“That means Xuesheng is...” her knees started buckling at the thought, but she forced strength into her limbs. She could mourn for her friend later, her sister needed her now:

“Do you know where she is being held?”

“At an abandoned warehouse on the west side of the mountain. Linghu Chong had already gone to rescue her.”

With both her lover and her sister in peril, Xiao Bai wasted no more time and dashed out of the garden. The shock of her friend's death and the threat to the two dearest people in the world to her, suppressed her normally sharp intellect. If she had spent time looking at the situation she would have spotted the trap for what it was, but at that moment her heart ruled her mind and all she could think about was saving her loved ones.

    ####

Linghu Chong made sure his sword was loose in its sheath before entering the warehouse. The large doors were open and within he could see Xiao Cuì lying unconscious on the empty floor. Cautiously he entered, knowing full well that this was a trap but not caring. He had woken from his bed to find a note on the table telling him that Xiao Cui was held at the warehouse and that if he wanted to see her alive he was to tell no one, but to come alone.

Having lost Xiao Bai, Linghu Chong was not going to let anything happen to her sister, even if it meant endangering himself. He strained every one of his senses trying to locate the ambushers he knew were there, but all he could hear was his own racing heart. When he was halfway to reaching Xiao Cui he detected someone entering through the main door after him.

Spinning around he drew his sword in the same movement and released a wave of sword Qi at the masked figure flying towards him. His assailant shot both both palms forwards sending a bolt of Qi energy to meet the attack. The attacks cancelled each other out in a huge thunderclap the shook the walls of the warehouse. Linghu Chong went straight on the offensive, leaping into the air he unleashed a series of aerial attacks aimed at the vital points of his enemy, his normally restrained fighting style suppressed by a his need to kill the man and save Xiao Cui.

Whoever the assassin was he was very skilled and he parried or evaded the viper fast blade. As the combatants slowly descended towards the ground Linghu Chong felt a nagging familiarity in his opponent's fighting style. But what truly disturbed him was that the man had made no offensive moves yet. The man seemed to be wanting to delay Linghu Chong rather than defeat him.

Both men reached the ground at the same time and Linghu Chong felt a strong build up of Qi energy around him. A cyclone of transparent Qi energy span up around the assassin and started expanding at an incredible rate, forcing Linghu Chong to leap backwards to avoid being caught up in it. The Qi winds started to concentrate around the assassin's chest and he released it in a devastating lance towards Linghu Chong.

Linghu Chong's sword glowed white hot as he channelled his Qi into the blade and prepared to slice the oncoming Qi lance in half. Something flew through the open doors and towards Linghu Chong at a speed that surpassed the Qi lance. The figure of woman in a light blue hemp dress stood between Linghu Chong and the lance. The Qi lance flew straight towards the woman's chest, but stopped a foot away from its target as it met her solidified aura. The energy from the lance split in half, like water around a rock before earthing itself harmlessly into the floor.

The assassin leapt backwards and flew through the open door slicing through a rope that was hanging beside the door as he went. A massive slab of metal fell down, sealing the only door and trapping Linghu Chong and the mysterious woman inside. Linghu Chong ran to Xiao Cui and was shocked to discover that it was a straw dummy dressed in her clothes.

Turning to look at the new arrival Linghu Chong saw that she had a piece of white cloth covering the lower portion of her face, but one look at those large doe like eyes told him who it was standing before him:

“Xiao Bai!” cried Linghu Chong as he ran towards his lover with outstretched arms.

“Stay back!” the authority in her voice demanded instant obedience and Linghu Chong stopped in mid stride.

For a moment no one spoke and Linghu Chong's numb mind tried to take in all that was happening. Was this really Xiao Bai, or was his mind playing tricks on him? Her eyes and voice definitely sounded like his lover, but if it was her then why was she so angry with him? Finally an answer came to mind and he gingerly started walking towards her again:

“Are you angry at me for what I did with Yingying? I swear I didn't intend to betray you. Please give me another chance.”

“You thought I was dead, so I can't blame you for finding someone else.”

“Then why didn't you come back to me?”

“You have committed yourself to Yingying and I am no longer the Xiao Bai you remember.”

“If the price for having you back is the loss of my honour, then I pay it gladly. Even if the entire world reviles me as a heartless man I don't care. The only thing I care about is you. To deny me you is to deny me air. I can't live without you Xiao Bai and if you tell me that I must marry Yingying then I tell you my bridal bed will also be my deathbed.” heartfelt tears flowed down Linghu Chong's face as he spoke, tears that were reflected in Xiao Bai's wonderful eyes.

When Linghu Chong was almost within reach of her when Xiao Bai raised a hand in front of herself to stop him coming any closer. With her free hand Xiao Bai removed her makeshift veil to reveal her scarred face:

“Ugly isn't it. Now you can forget me and devote your life to Yingying who truly deserves you.”

“Xiao Bai, my life is yours. If you are really that concerned about your scar I promise that I will never look at it again.”

Xiao Bai laughed mockingly: “That's not possible”

“It is if I have no eyes” quick as a flash Linghu Chong hurled is right index and middle fingers at his own eyes.

Xiao Bai lunged forwards and caught his wrist with his fingers less than an inch away from his eyes. From the strength in his arm Xiao Bai knew that he fully intended to claw out his own eyes:

“Why are you so silly?” she demanded as she gazed into his eyes.

“What good are my eyes if I cannot look upon you. What meaning is there in my life if it is a life without you. If I can choose between spending a heartbeat with you or a lifetime without you, then a choose the heartbeat.”

Xiao Bai threw herself into his arms and buried her face in his chest her body shaking as she sobbed. Linghu Chong held her as tightly as he dared his own tears mingling with hers.

    ####

Bujie turned to the young couple who were sharing the main room of the cottage with him and his wife. When Bai Xuesheng had approached him with his plan to trap Xiao Bai, Bujie thought it would never work. But now it seemed that everything was going according to the young man's plan. Perhaps he is as intelligent as he appears to be.

The four of them turned to the main door as they heard footsteps to find Linghu Chong and Xiao Bai walking into the cottage hand in hand. After their reconciliation the two of them had searched around the warehouse and found a concealed chain near the front door. When they pulled the chain they activated a counter weight device that had been fitted onto the slab of metal blocking the doorway.

Xiao Cui ran into her sister's open arms and they shared a fierce embrace. Bujie put his arm around his wife's shoulder as tears of joy rolled down her cheeks. Bai Xuesheng walked up to Linghu Chong and offered his arm which the latter took in a warrior's grip:

“Thank you my friend” said Linghu Chong in gratitude to the man who had returned his lover to him.

“Its what friends are for.” replied Bai Xuesheng with a relieved smile.

Xiao Bai let go of her sister and turned to Bai Xuesheng. Without warning her hand snaked out and slapped him on the left cheek so hard that his teeth rattled. A collective gasp escaped from everyone's lips. Bai Xuesheng more shocked than hurt looked at his friend in disbelief:

“That was for making me think you were dead. If you ever scare me like that again I'll kill you.” Xiao Bai followed her words with a kiss to the same cheek she had just slapped:

“That is for being alive and coming up with your clever little plan.”

Bai Xuesheng rubbed his cheek then gave Xiao Bai a mischievous smile:

    “Worth it” he declared.

Sitting around the table the four young people talked happily while Bujie listened to them with a contented smile on his lips and wife busied herself with placing endless plates of food on the table. Both young women offered to help their adopted mother but she gestured for them to sit. After nearly an hour of joyous chatter Bai Xuesheng let out a sigh and spoke in a sad voice:

“So what are we going to do about Yingying?”

Silence greeted his words. It was a question at the back of everyone's mind but they all feared to mention it:

“I will talk to her tonight” declared Linghu Chong.

“Chong Ge. I know you are honoured bound to marry her. I am willing to share you with her if you want.” Xiao Bai spoke the words calmly but her eyes showed how painful it was for her to make the offer.

    Linghu Chong took her hand:

“My heart is very small. I already have you in it and there is no room for another.”

“Perhaps I should go with you?” offered Bai Xuesheng.

“This is something I need to do alone.” replied Linghu Chong, but his voice lacked the conviction of his words.

Silence filled the room as everything nursed their private doubts and fears.

    ####

Yingying returned to her room with her heart full of worry. She had been searching for Linghu Chong all day without success and now her mind was plagued with terrifying ideas of what might have happened to him. However her fears vanished the moment she opened the door and found her lover waiting inside. Dashing forwards she threw her arms around him and pressed her body against his:

“Where have you been? I've been going out of my mind with worry.” said Yingying as relieved tears starting flowing down her cheeks.

For a moment Yingying was so happy with Linghu Chong's return that her mind could not think of anything else, but slowly she started noticing that something wasn't right. Her lover had not returned her embrace and instead his arms hung limply by his sides as if he was afraid to touch her. In fact his entire body felt as tense as if he was being held by a giant snake rather than a beautiful woman. Yingying looked up into his eyes:

“What is it?” she asked in a voice made timid by concern.

Linghu Chong disentangled himself from Yingying:

“Yingying please sit down I have something to tell you.” His tone was as serious as the grave and held a hint of sadness. Yingying knew it was bad news.

When they were both seated Linghu Chong took a deep breath and his handsome face contorted in pain, showing how difficult it was for him to say the next words:

“There is no easy way to say this so I will be blunt. I am sorry Yingying but I cannot marry you.”

For moment Yingying refused to believe what she was hearing. Surely he had not just said what she thought he said:

“I am sorry, what did you just say?” Yingying asked with a hopeful smile and pleading eyes. Looking into those eyes Linghu Chong felt as if his heart was being wrenched out of his chest. But he gritted his teeth and spoke on:

    “I cannot marry you.”

Yingying fixed her eyes to floor as she took in his words, then slowly raised her head to meet his gaze:

“Have I done something wrong? Or is it because you of who my father is?” Yingying's voice trembled a little from the effort of suppressing her raging emotions.

“No Yingying, this has nothing to do with you or your father. I cannot marry you because my heart belongs to someone else.”

“But Dongfang Bubai is dead. Am I worth even less than a dead woman?” an edge had crept into Yingying's voice as the first sparks of anger were lit.

“She is not dead. I have been reunited with her.”

“What has the WITCH got that I don't!? Why do you choose her over me!?” tears of sadness and anger mixed with her words making Yingying sound like a streaking Banshee as she spoke.

“I can no more choose to stop loving her than I can choose to stop breathing. She is my life.”

“Then what am I!? Your plaything to be discarded on a whim!”

“I am sorry Yingying, I never meant to hurt you.”

Yingying's laugh showed that she was on the brink of madness and Linghu Chong felt wretched for being the cause of her distress. Suddenly Yingying reached into her belt and pulled out a small dagger which she quickly lunged towards Linghu Chong's throat. The tip of the dagger nipped the skin and a small trickle of blood ran down the blade:

“I give you one last chance. Will you choose me or that witch.”

“I have told you there is no choice. If taking my life will soothe your pain then I give it to you gladly.”

“So be it. What I cannot have, I choose to destroy!” With a scream Yingying lunged forwards, but a pebble flew through the window knocking the dagger out of her hand. A figure burst through the same window and grabbed Linghu Chong by the shoulder dragging him away from Yingying. This all happened so fast that Yingying had no time to react and was only aware of Bai Xuesheng's presence when he stood between her and Linghu Chong:

“Yingying, please don't be like this.” pleaded Bai Xuesheng.

“So you are on her side as well? Well that witch must be something special in bed to entice you as well.”

“Yingying, I am not taking anyone's side. But Linghu Chong and Xiao Bai are meant to be together and there is nothing anyone can do to change that.”

“Spare me your words of wisdom. I hate all of you and I swear that you will all pay a thousand folds foy the pain I have suffered today.” With these words Yingying ran out of the room desperate to put as much distance as possible between herself and the men who had betrayed her.

The two men stood in silence for what seemed like an eternity until Linghu Chong broke the silence:

    “Thank you Xue...”

“Don't say it!” the anger in Bai Xuesheng's voice struck Linghu Chong like a hammer and he had to force himself not to step back from it:

“Just make sure you make Xiao Bai happy.” Bai Xuesheng didn't have to finish the sentence as Linghu Chong could guess what the price would be if he couldn't.

As the mantis stalks its prey, the bird prepares to swoop down

Ren Woxing sat on his throne as the prisoner was dragged before him and roughly flung at the foot of the dais. Looking down at the battered and chained form of Tong Baixiong, the Lord of the Sun-Moon cult shook his head sadly. The man had showed an admirable sense of loyalty to the very end and had refused to denounce Dongfang Bubai even as he was beaten to within an inch of his life.

Turning to his right Ren Woxing looked at his daughter sitting besides him. To his surprise Yingying was grinning like a cat toying with a mouse. His daughter had changed greatly since her return from Mount Heng over a month ago. A cruel ruthlessness had entered her heart and it manifested itself in the way Yingying hunted down the supporters of Dongfang Bubai. Almost from the moment of her return Yingying had being leading the search parties looking for the rebels and whenever she found them she left none alive.

So enthusiastic was she in her persecution of them that she had wiped out nearly all of them in less than a month, until only Tong Baixiong was left. In the end Yingying had caught the elusive cult elder by capturing his aged mother and displaying her in a cage at the foot of Black-wood Cliff. When Tong Baixiong had arrived to exchange himself for his mother, Yingying had made him watch as she slowly plunged a dagger into the old woman's heart.

Now the broken man lay unmoving on the floor totally at the mercy of his enemies. At the foot of the throne stood Xiang Wentian and Yang Lianting. Xiang Wentian looked at his former rival with a mixture of admiration and pity. Admiration at the man's courage, for despite all he had went through Tong Baixiong had not once begged for his life. Pity was for the sorry state that this once proud man had now been reduced to.

Yang Lianting however had no such sympathies for the man. Having endured years of sly remarks and insults from the man he now gloated over the hated cult elder. Walking with a pompous swagger the spy-master stood over Tong Baixiong and kicked him viciously in the ribs eliciting a grunt of pain from the man:

“I've waited a long time for this you old windbag.” hissed Yang Lianting as he prepared to launch another kick at the helpless man.

With a scream Tong Baixiong sprang to his feet and pounced on Yang Lianting with the savagery of a panther. Before the latter could react Tong Baixiong had wrapped his chains around his neck and yanked on them with whatever strength he had left. Desperately Yang Lianting clawed at the hands and face of his attacker, but Tong Baixiong's body had grown numb to pain and he tightened the chains, determined to choke the hated spy-master to death.

Xiang Wentian made to come to Yang Lianting's rescue but was stopped by a command from Yingying, whose cruel smile had broadened as she watched the man being strangled to death. Finally Yang Lianting stopped struggling and Tong Baixiong released his purple faced corpse to fall on the ground. Glaring up at the throne he saw Yingying staring back at him:

“The traitor Tong Baixiong has murdered our servant Yang Lianting. Take him outside to be torn apart by horses.” commanded the Holy Lady.

As the guards dragged Tong Baixiong out of the throne room Ren Woxing studied his daughter. Her malicious smile hadn't changed and he was glad that she had finally become a person worthy of succeeding him as Lord of the Cult.

    ####

Yingying closed the door to the room that had once belonged to Dongfang Bai, but which she had now taken for her own. It had been a good day, for not only had she eliminated the last of that witch's supporters within the Cult but as a bonus Tong Baixiong had dealt with Yang Lianting for her as well.

She had been planning to get rid of the treacherous scoundrel for sometime but had held her hand for fear of being accused of betraying her own supporters. Now that the last threats to her family's power had been removed she was free to devote her attention else where. Yingying had come up with a plan to destroy her hated rival and was satisfied that the first stage was complete. Soon she will take back everything that that witch had stolen from her.

Opening a cupboard she removed the Sunflower Manual from within. Tightening her grip on the manual she imaged breaking Dongfang Bai with her bare hands and smiled in a way that could only be described as demonic.

    ####

Linghu Chong turned to look at Xiao Bai as she took a sip of her tea and smiled. It had been over a month since their reconciliation and it had been the happiest, as well as the most exhausting time of his life. Xiao Bai had began an intense training schedule for him almost as soon as she had returned, determined that he would be the victor at the meeting in the Spring Solstice.

Knowing that Zuo Lengshan was going to be their greatest threat, Xiao Bai had tailored the training on defeating him. Although Linghu Chong could best Zuo Lengshan in swordsmanship, the latter was superior in both strength and experience so making the outcome of the oncoming clash by no means a certainty.

Rather than have Linghu Chong waste his time on trying to catch up with Zuo Lengshan's strength they had instead focussed on refining his technique to allow him to overcome his limitation. Linghu Chong had taught Xiao Bai the Mount Song sword art, which she had learnt at an astonishing rate. Xiao Bai had channelled her incredible speed through her newly acquired sword art and sparred with Linghu Chong in order to prepare him.

Everyday from dawn to dusk they would practice until Linghu Chong thought that he would collapse from exhaustion. However not a single word of complaint escaped his lips, so glad was he at being able to spend time with his love. Besides Xiao Bai kept him motivated by finding ever more enticing rewards during the night, which although equally as exhausting as the day time training were infinitely more pleasurable.

When satisfied that Linghu Chong swordsmanship was as good as it was going to get within the short time frame, they had redirected their focus on counter the Freezing Inner Energy. Not only could this art neutralise Linghu Chong's Art of Star Absorption, but as demonstrated at Shaolin could even prevent him from using his Dugu Nine Sword as well. To overcome this obstacle they drew inspiration from Linghu Chong's fight with Bai Xuesheng.

Xiao Bai had noticed that her lover had been able to heat his blade up to a white hot intensity and saw this as the ideal way of defeating the Freezing Inner Energy. While Linghu Chong's Qi energy was insufficient to keep his blade permanently at such a temperature, he was able to create short burst of heat at the desired temperature. Working together they were able to develop Linghu Chong's skill at Qi manipulation to allow him to do this at will, while at the same time conserving his limited pool of Qi power. Now Linghu Chong was as prepared as he was ever going to be.

They were now on the road to Mount Song accompanied by Bai Xuesheng, Xiao Cui and a dozen of the most senior Mount Heng apprentices. Having stopped at a road side tea house the four friends were sharing a table when Xiao Bai noticed Linghu Chong staring at her with a wistful smile:

    “What is it?”

    “Lets get married!”

Xiao Bai almost choked on her drink, while Xiao Cui looked on in wide-eyed amazement and Bai Xuesheng tried to hide an amused smile behind the teacup he had raised to his lips. Regaining her composure Xiao Bai stared at her lover:

    “Now?”

“As soon as the gathering at Mount Song is over, whether I win or lose promise me we will get married.”

Blushing furiously Xiao Bai didn't know whether to slap or kiss him. Finally she nodded her head quickly, accepting his impromptu proposal:

“I object” declared Bai Xuesheng and before anyone could speak he continued:

“Unless we make it a double wedding.”

Now all eyes turned to Xiao Cui who had turned the same shade of crimson as her sister. Her voice barely a whisper she replied:

    “By your command my Lord”

Mu Gaofeng slit the throat of the last of the bandits and snatched the bag of gems from his hands before the man's body had even touched the ground. The bandit slumped on the ground to join his dozen or so comrades whom Mu Gaofeng had despatched earlier. The hunchback had been trailing this group for the last three days ever since they stole the gems that had been destined for the Emperor's treasury.

The bandits had been brave and clever in their plans to steal the gems but had made a mistake in choosing whom to sell their loot to. Knowing that such goods would be difficult to sell they had contacted a black-market jeweller to find a buyer. Unfortunately the jeweller was an acquaintance of Mu Gaofeng and had passed on the news to him for a share of the gems.

Opening the bag the hunchback's face split into an ugly smile as the gems sparkled like stars. Suddenly his nose winked as a strange aroma wafted on the breeze towards him. It took him a moment to realize that the smell was perfume. Turning in the direction that the scent was coming from he saw a slim figure in a bright red robe coming towards him.

With a shock Mu Gaofeng recognized the delicately handsome features of Lin Pingzhi. The young man walked with a strange sway of the hips and a very disturbing smile that made the hunchback's skin crawl. Mu Gaofeng laughed loudly in an attempt to shake of his unease and unsettle the young man:

“Well this is a pleasant surprise. Have you come to pay your respect to your Grand-papa?”

Lin Pingzhi toyed with the hilt of his sword before replying:

“I don't think so, you repulsive misshapen freak.”

Screaming with rage Mu Gaofeng raised his scimitar and charged. Covering the distance between himself and Lin Pingzhi in a matter of heartbeats the hunchback leapt into the air and brought his blade down. The force behind the blow would have split the young man clean in half, but to Mu Gaofeng's surprise his foe wasn't there any more. One moment Lin Pingzhi was standing there smiling arrogantly and then he was simply gone.

Mu Gaofeng's blade plunged deep into the earth and he scanned his surroundings like a trapped animal in search of its hunter. Mocking laughter came from behind his ear and the hunchback spun quickly, wrenching his scimitar free in the same movement. The person laughing could not have been more than a foot away from the hunchback but in the second it took him to turn in the direction of the sound his enemy was gone and his blade cut only air.

The same mocking laugh appeared again from behind and again Mu Gaofeng spun around, his scimitar following in a murderous sweep, but like before he found nothing. For several minutes the hunchback spun on the spot, his scimitar making power horizontal arcs that would have downed a dozen foes. But always there was nothing except the frightening disembodied laughter.

Then abruptly the laughter stopped and the hunchback was left alone with only the dead bodies of the bandits for company. Looking around in fear he desperately looked for his tormentor. But there was no sign of Lin Pingzhi and the hunchback wondered if he had imagined the whole encounter. But just as he was starting to convince himself that it had all been an hallucination the laughter started again, this time from several feet behind the hunchback.

Reluctantly the terrified Mu Gaofeng turned around to see Lin Pingzhi sitting on a boulder clapping with joy:

“Wonderful performance. Just like watching a deformed monkey dancing.” said Lin Pingzhi in a voice so squeaky that it hurt Mu Gaofeng's ears.

With a terror filled roar the hunchback hurled his scimitar at Lin Pingzhi. The curved blade travelled with the speed of an arrow as it headed straight for the young man's head. There was a flash of metal and Mu Gaofeng stared in horror as his weapon came hurtling back at him at a speed who could not hope to avoid.

The scimitar buried itself deep in Mu Gaofeng's left shoulder crippling the arm. Screaming in pain the hunchback staggered backwards blind panic gripping his heart. Looking up he saw Lin Pingzhi lolling on the boulder his bared blade held lightly in his hand. The cruel smile on his face showing how much he was enjoying his torment of the hunchback.

Turning tail Mu Gaofeng leapt into the air, desperate to get away from the death that was Lin Pingzhi. The ring of steel slicing through air rang out and the hunchback felt his hamstring being severed. Mu Gaofeng fell to the ground with a crash and grunted in pain at his now useless legs. With his remaining functioning limb he clawed at the earth in a last futile attempt to crawl away.

Walking slowly Lin Pingzhi stepped onto Mu Gaofeng's right hand and gradually applied pressure until the bones first grated then shattered. Standing over the paralysed hunchback Lin Pingzhi cackled in gloating laughter:

“Well grand-papa, should I end it now?”

Mu Gaofeng stared up his gaze a mixture of terror, anger, frustration and pain. Lin Pingzhi's wicked smile broadened:

“No, lets enjoy this a little longer.” said Lin Pingzhi. These were the last words Mu Gaofeng ever heard, as his own tormented screams soon blocked out all other sound.

Zuo Lengshan smiled as he looked down from his seat at the solitary figure of Yue Lingshan standing on the platform. The Master of Mount Song made a mental note to thank Yue Buqun later. Who would have thought that the Master of Mount Hua would have help him in removing the obstacle that was Linghu Chong. Zuo Lengshan had been surprised when Yue Buqun had agreed to his proposal of uniting the Five Schools into one, but this had been nothing compared to the shock he had received when Yue Lingshan had stepped onto the platform.

With the decision of unification made it was decided that the position of Lord of the new school would be decided by individual combat, which was to take place on the open platform at the peak of Mount Song. Zuo Lengshan had initially been concerned about this for his assassins had failed in their mission to kill Linghu Chong and now it seemed that he would have to face the formidable swordsman.

However Yue Lingshan had stepped onto the platform and declared an open challenge to anyone who wished to obtain the mantle of Lordship. Incredibly the young woman had defeated the veteran fighters Mo Da and Yujizi with lost techniques from their respective schools. Although impressive, Zuo Lengshan's expert eyes could tell that she had only won because the men had been taken by surprise at having their own arts turned against them. In a true fight either one of them would have killed her easily.

Zuo Lengshan knew that if he could see this then so could Linghu Chong and when his rival had stepped onto the platform he had expected Yue Lingshan to be defeated quickly. But he was to be surprised again, for although Linghu Chong completely dominated the duel, he always held back from delivering the final blow. As the fight progressed Yue Lingshan seemed to lose her footing and almost fall of the platform. Linghu Chong had caught her before she fell and had received a stab to the left shoulder for his kindness.

Now Linghu Chong sat on his chair while the Dongfang sisters tended to his wound. Zuo Lengshan felt his anger rise as he looked upon the hated face of Dongfang Bai. When that witch had arrived with Linghu Chong and declared her intentions to observe the gathering, Zuo Lengshan had been sorely tempted to order his men to kill her. But he had not done so, partially because of her fighting prowess but also because of the presence of Fangzheng and Chongxu. The two of them had been invited to the gathering along with Yu Canghai and Bai Xuesheng as impartial judges.

The two elderly martial artists had greeted Dongfang Bai warmly and Zuo Lengshan could not afford to make enemies of them. At least not yet. Turning his gaze to his unsheathed sword resting on a rack besides him Zuo Lengshan fought down the urge to bury the blade in her chest. Looking up he met the eye of his one remaining rival for the position of Lord of the Five Mountain Schools. Fixing a false smile to his face Zuo Lengshan spoke:

“Brother Yue, I must congratulate you on having such a talented daughter. Being able to defeat the Heads of three schools at such a young age is an unprecedented achievement. But I wonder how my meagre skills will measure up to her.”

“You jest Brother Zuo. My daughter would never dare challenge someone of your standing.”

“Oh, so are we going to witness the famous 'Gentleman Sword' himself demonstrate his amazing skills?”

Although Zuo Lengshan kept his voice warm, the challenge being issued was clear. If Yue Buqun refused to fight now, then he would be forfeiting his chance at being the Lord of the new school. With a smile equally as fake as Zuo Lengshan, the Master of Mount Hua replied:

“Well if Brother Zuo insists, then a guess I must embarrass myself” Turning to his daughter Yue Buqun ordered her down from the platform. Unsheathing his sword Yue Buqun stepped lightly onto the platform and took a defensive stance. His posture was ready but relaxed and the crocodile smile he wore made Zuo Lengshan a little uneasy.

Yue Buqun had shown that he had access to the lost skills of at least two of the five schools. What other surprises might he have. But even as he pondered these thoughts Zuo Lengshan dismissed them. It didn't matter, he was committed now and would see Yue Buqun dead no matter what the old fox had up his sleeves. Taking up his longsword he flew towards Yue Buqun with the speed of an arrow, the point of his sword aimed at his enemy's heart.

Leaping into the air Yue Buqun met the attack head on. The peak of Mount Song echoed with the sound of steel on steel as the blades clashed in a flurry of blows too fast for all but the very best martial artists to follow. The combatants fought viciously each hoping to overcome the other in this furious initial exchange. As their feet touched the ground Zuo Lengshan sent a decapitating blow at Yue Buqun's neck, but the attack was met by the latter's blade.

As the Masters strained against each other their swords started glowing from being infused with Qi. Zuo Lengshan's sword glistened as the sunlight reflected of the frost covered blade, while a purple mist surrounded Yue Buqun's sword. After several moments the white frost overcome the purple mist and Yue Buqun was hurled backwards. Zuo Lengshan sensed victory and unleashed sheet after sheet of blindingly white sword Qi at Yue Buqun.

Incredibly Yue Buqun started skipping around the platform like a young girl picking flowers. The scene would have been ridiculous if not for the ungodly speed at which he moved. Prancing within a hairsbreadth of the sheets of Qi energy Yue Buqun deftly avoided them while maintaining his fanciful dance. Unable to hit Yue Buqun the sheets of freezing Qi energy, so cold that they burnt, struck the Mount Song apprentices at the foot of the platform.

The unlucky apprentices lost limbs and lives to the murderous sheets that turned warm flesh into cold ice. Soon all that were left of them were frozen corpses with great chunks of flesh missing from the torsos or crippled men staring at the ice covered limbs. Yue Buqun struck and a streak of red lightning came hurtling towards Zuo Lengshan who barely got his sword up in time to block the attack.

Red lightning engulfed his sword and he was sent skidding back across the platform. Zuo Lengshan felt a moment of panic. How could Yue Buqun deliver such a powerful blow. Surely his Violet Mist Divine Skill could not be this powerful. But the moment passed and Zuo Lengshan's normal ruthless determination returned. Plunging his sword downwards to earthed the lightning into the platform and dissipated the energy.

Yue Buqun soared towards his opponent like the mythological Phoenix his glowing sword leaving trail of crimson light. Suddenly he hit a solid wall of white and was hurled backwards. Looking down at his sword he saw the blade covered in ice. Sparks danced along the blade as Yue Buqun shattered the ice with his Qi. Turning his gaze towards his enemy he saw waves of freezing Qi power were flowing from Zuo Lengshan and billowing along the platform. Whatever the waves touched it froze solid. Quickly Yue Buqun backed away knowing that if the waves touched his feet he would be stuck fast to the platform.

It wasn't long before he had reached the edge of the platform. The situation seemed hopeless. Soon he would either have to leap of the platform so forfeiting the duel, or be immobilise by the oncoming wave and be at the mercy of Zuo Lengshan. As the last inches of the platform got covered by the wave Yue Buqun leapt into the air and used his Qi to slow his descent. This was only a temporary reprieve as he could not stay airborne forever.

As he came plummeting back down Yue Buqun stabbed his sword into the platform and balanced himself precariously on the hilt of his sword with his right hand taking all of his weight. Ice quickly ran up the blade and froze it to the platform. Zuo Lengshan smiled in relief. Using his Qi this way was quickly draining his strength and he had worried that he would be exhausted before he could defeat Yue Buqun. Luckily his opponent had disarmed himself.

Wrenching his own sword free Zuo Lengshan charged towards Yue Buqun determined to end this fight. Yue Buqun twisted his sword and the frozen blade shattered into hundreds of needle size fragments. With a flick of his fingers Yue Buqun sent two of the fragments at Zuo Lengshan at such speed that the he could not avoid them. Zou Lengshan was thrown backwards as if he had been struck by a giant invisible fist.

Clutching his ruined eyes the man screamed with rage and pain:

“Yue Buqun you scum! How dare you trick me.”

“Now now Brother Zuo, as the old saying goes 'weapons have no eyes', so you can't blame me. I assume you will not be challenging me for position of Lord of the Five Schools any more?”

The gloating tone infuriated Zuo Lengshan and he would have like nothing more than to choke his vanquisher to death with his bare hands. But his intellect asserted itself. To continue fighting would be suicide, but if he submitted he may still live to get his revenge. Struggling to his knees he spoke loud enough so that everyone on the peak could hear:

“All hail Lord Yue, Lord of the Five Mountain Schools.”

The cheer was soon picked up by the other members of the Five Mountain Schools and soon echoed across the entire peak. Yue Buqun opened his arms and basked into the glory he had lusted after for so long.

    ####'

People started leaving the peak soon after the new Lord was decided. As Yu Canghai started to leave he heard someone call his name and turned to see Lin Pingzhi walking towards him. The young man was covered in travel dust:

“Meet me here at the first watch of the night.”

Without waiting for a reply the young man turned his back to the Master of Qingcheng school and began walking towards his wife and in laws, leaving a very perplexed Yu Canghai staring after him.

Hi all. Just a warning that the following chapter gets a little graphic.

    Secret of the Sunflower

Standing on top of one of the stone towers at the peak of Mount Song, Linghu Chong stared into the night his thoughts troubled. He had declined Yue Buqun's offer to spend the night at the school and had decided to spend the night on the peak instead. His companions had supported his decision wholeheartedly for they too had no desire to spend any more time in the company of Yue Buqun and his sycophants.

The enticing smell of warmed wine filled his nostrils and he turned to see Xiao Bai walking towards him with a bottle of warmed wine and two cups. Giving his lover a grateful smile he greeted her:

“As always my lady your appearance brings light to my darkest moments,”

“Is it me or this that you desire” said Xiao Bai as she dangled the bottle in front of him.

“Would you be terribly offended if I said both?”

“Devastated” answered Xiao Bai in a husky voice that sounded anything but. Kissing her lover lightly on the lips she filled the cups and passed one to him. Linghu Chong downed the drink in a single gulp and Xiao Bai refilled his cup:

    “Thank you my lady.”

“I thought that you might need a good drink after today.”

“I am sorry” said Linghu Chong with lowered eyes.

    “Whatever for?”

“I wasted all that time you spent training me.”

Xiao Bai patted him gently on the cheek and his gaze rose to see her beautiful smiling face:

“No one could have guessed that Yue Buqun would be so underhanded as to use his own daughter. Or that he had mastered the Evil Resisting Sword.”

“That was the Evil Resisting Sword Shifu was using?”

Xiao Bai nodded. Linghu Chong's curiosity was piqued:

“So how do you know about the Evil Resisting Sword?”

Xiao Bai smiled, then in her best lecturer voice answered him:

“Both the Evil Resisting Sword and my Sunflower Manual share an origin”

    “Which is?”

“I assume you know the story of the Nine Yin Manual?”

Linghu Chong nodded and she continued:

“Well something not widely known was that Huang Shang had an assistant working with him when he was compiling the Taoist text, a eunuch by the name Huā Yùnzǐ. Huā Yùnzǐ had been a martial artist before being castrated as punishment for some crime now lost to history. He quickly recognized that the religious principals being compiled by Huang Shang could be adapted for martial arts practice.

However while Huang Shang's work was aimed at achieving harmony within oneself and maximising any martial arts one might study, Huā Yùnzǐ took a different approach. The one draw back of Nine Yin Manual was that it would take decades to realize the true potential of the art for it was still restricted by the constraint of balancing Yin and Yang.

But what if one could cultivate either extreme Yin or Yang within a short period of time? Normally the human body could not do that, but Huā Yùnzǐ was not a normal man. Having lost his manhood his body was already extremely Yin and so could in theory cultivate extreme Yang.

After many decades of experimenting Huā Yùnzǐ finally found a method of cultivating extreme Yang and recorded his findings in the Sunflower Manual. The manual was kept in the Imperial Library until the fall of the Song dynasty when it was lost in the chaos of war. Many centuries later the manual found it's way into the hands of the Shaolin Abbot.”

“But how do you know all this?” asked Linghu Chong.

“A copy of the manual eventually fell into the hands of the Sun-Moon Cult and became the treasure of the Lords of the Cult.”

“So you have studied the manual?”

Xiao Bai answered with a smile:

“Being a woman I was already inclined towards Yin so could study the art, albeit at a slower rate than a man who had made the required sacrifice.”

“But how is the Sunflower Manual and the Evil Resisting Sword related?”

“The copy of the manual was made by the Mount Hua elders Yue Su and Cai Zifeng while they were guests at Shaolin. When their deceitful act was discovered the Abbot had the original text burnt and sent his apprentice Duyuan to warn the elders not to study the manual as the art was extremely dangerous.

Unfortunately Duyuan himself was seduced by the incredible powers promised within the manual and instead of warning the elders against studying it, he aided them in their endeavour. After spending several months with the elders Duyuan left Mount Hua and recorded his understanding of the art onto his robe which he later developed into the Evil Resisting Sword.”

“And the connection with the Lin family?”

“Duyuan returned to secular life after developing the Evil Resisting Sword and founded the Fuwei Escort Agency under the name Lin Yuantu.”

As Linghu Chong digested all he had been told a very disturbing thought struck him:

    “So that means Shifu has...”

“I am afraid so. But what worries me is that Yue Buqun might have been involved in the death of Abbess Dingxian.”

    “What!?”

“From what you have told me the Abbess was killed by a single needle to the heart. Only a practitioner of the Sunflower Manual could do this.”

Xiao Bai's reasoning was flawless and Linghu Chong could only nod his head in agreement. Letting out an exhausted sigh he spoke:

“I am so sick of all the hypocrisy in the Martial Arts world. Lets get away from it all.”

    “And go where?”

“Anywhere, as long as we are together.”

“So you intend to make good on your promise.”

“You had better. I've already sent word to prepare the White Tiger Palace for a wedding that will be remembered for a thousand years to come.” shouted Bai Xuesheng as he walked up the tower with Xiao Cuì.

Linghu Chong and Xiao Bai turned to greet the new arrivals with welcoming smiles, but their faces fell as the peered over their heads. Turning around Bai Xuesheng and Xiao Cuì. saw Lin Pingzhi and Yue Lingshan emerging from the night. The Mount Heng apprentices shot to their feet and reached for their weapons.

Lin Pingzhi held his right hand up in a placating gesture while his left hand held a bundle:

“I am Lin Pingzhi, apprenticed to Lord Yue and this is my wife.”

Yihe stepped forward and offered a polite bow:

“How may we be of service to the young sir?”

“I am meeting someone here tonight but was unaware that your honourable selves were also present. Please accept my apologies.”
“Lin Pingzhi!” shouted someone from behind the young man. Turning sharply Lin Pingzhi's face split in a grin similar to what a cat would give to a mouse, as he spotted Yu Canghai stalking towards him accompanied by half a dozen of his apprentices:

“Master Yu, glad you could make it.” said Lin Pingzhi in a voice that dripped with venom.

“So you were planning to ambush me with these nuns were you?”

“I had no idea that these sisters were spending the night here. In light of the current circumstances lets go somewhere else, so as not to disturb their slumber.”

“Wait! As we have already disturbed them we might as well stay and get this over with.”

“Very well” Lin Pingzhi saluted the Mount Heng apprentices “please allow us some room fellow apprentices of the Five Mountain Schools.”

The nuns obliged and backed away from them. Yu Canghai glared at Lin Pingzhi with naked hatred:

“Well brat, what do you want?”

“I just wanted to present you with a little gift.” said Lin Pingzhi as he tossed his bundle towards Yu Canghai.

Catching the bundle the Master of Qingcheng School quickly unwrapped it and his eyes widened in shock as he recognized Mu Gaofeng's blood encrusted scimitar. Fighting to control his mounting fears he bellowed loudly:

“I don't know what underhanded trick you used to steal this from that deformed hunchback, but if you think this impresses me then you are mistaken.”

As Yu Canghai tossed the scimitar away Lin Pingzhi struck. Moving so fast that he appeared as a blur Lin Pingzhi circled Yu Canghai three times before catching the scimitar before it could touch the ground. Yu Canghai reached for his sword but then heard a strange gurgling sound from behind. Turning sharply his face turned deathly pale as he saw that his apprentices had their own swords sticking out of their chests and the sound he had heard was the blood bubbling from their mouths.

Lin Pingzhi wrapped the scimitar up and spoke without looking at Yu Canghai:

“Impressed yet Master Yu? You went through a lot of trouble in order to get your filthy hands on my family's Evil Resisting Sword. Well I am going to make sure that you witness its true power before too long.”

Chuckling to himself Lin Pingzhi started walking away from Yu Canghai as if he was some kind of discarded rubbish. Spotting Linghu Chong on the tower he started ascending the stairs with Yue Lingshan in tow. As the couple reached the top of the tower Dongfang Bai and Bai Xuesheng stepped in front of their respective lovers. Their positions allowed Lin Pingzhi to see both Linghu Chong and Xiao Cuì, but in order to get to either one of them he would first have to get pass their lovers.

Saluting them Lin Pingzhi addressed Linghu Chong:

“Brother Linghu. I've been informed that my wife accidentally injured you today. Please accept my deepest apologies for the unfortunate incident.” Despite the kind words he could not disguise his gloating tone.

Yue Lingshan stepped forward looking up at Linghu Chong with a mixture of misery and shame which made him remember that innocent girl he had grown up with. As she opened her mouth, Linghu Chong decided to speak first in order to spare her any further embarrassment:

“Please don't mention it Brother Lin. The injury isn't serious and as you said it was only an accident.” He accompanied his words of a warm smile directed at Yue Lingshan which brought back some of the happiness to her eyes.

Dongfang Bai felt a stab of jealousy flash through her heart and her lovely face contorted into a mask of pain for a split second. Xiao Cuì caught the look of hurt and gave her sister a sympathetic smile while Bai Xuesheng kept his attention firmly focussed on Lin Pingzhi. With a final salute Lin Pingzhi turned and left with Yue Lingshan following him.

Staring after them Linghu Chong felt a sense of foreboding in his heart. He couldn't shake the feeling that tonight's events were a prelude to more dangerous times ahead.

    ####

Ren Woxing looked at Yingying through the doting eyes of a loving father as she played with her dog beside a lake. He treasured these increasingly rare moments of tranquillity with his daughter and a small part of him truly wished that everyday could be as carefree as today. But his own lust for power and his daughter's need for vengeance was stronger than any other desires in their hearts.

As if summoned by his thoughts a messenger arrived, falling to his knees the man prostrated himself at Ren Woxing's feet:

“Well what is it?” demanded Ren Woxing, his voice making it clear he was annoyed at having his time with his daughter disturbed.

“A report has just arrived from our spies at Mount Song and Emissary Xiang ordered me to bring it directly to you my Lord.” replied the messenger as he presented a small sealed message to his Lord.

Snatching up the message Ren Woxing tore it open and read quickly. As he finished reading Yingying walked up to him cradling her pet:

    “What is it papa?”

“Well miracles never cease. It seems that that old hypocrite Yue Buqun has somehow defeated Zuo Lengshan and become Lord of the Five Mountain Schools.”

An unpleasant smile appeared on Yingying's face. Seeing her father looking at her in confusion she giggled:

“I was worried that Linghu Chong would gain the mantle of Lordship. He would have been very difficult to manipulate, especially with that witch Dongfang Bubai by his side. But Yue Buqun presents a much easier opponent to deal with.”

Ren Woxing returned his daughter's smile as he realized the truth in her words. It would seem that Heaven truly wishes them to rule the Martial Arts World.

    ####

Linghu Chong was dosing peacefully on his lover's lap as the carriage made its way along the road. Despite his words to Yue Lingshan his wound was very deep and Xiao Bai had hired the carriage so that he wouldn't overexert himself on their journey back to Mount Heng. Now the combination of the carriage's rocking motion, his lover's wonderful scent and the sedative he had taken was starting to lull Linghu Chong into a peaceful sleep.

Gently Xiao Bai stroked his brow and started humming a soothing lullaby further encouraging him to enter the land of dreams. The carriage came to sudden halt and Linghu Chong was jolted awake. Xiao Bai threw open the carriage curtain her face a mask of anger at the disturbance to her lover's rest. Looking over the heads of the Mount Heng apprentices she saw the reason for the sudden stop.

In front of them stood Lin Pingzhi and Yue Lingshan surrounded by dozens of Qingcheng school's apprentices. Despite outnumbering their enemy more than ten to one the Qingcheng apprentices moved cautiously like rats surrounding a wolf. At the head of the apprentices was Yu Canghai with his sword drawn. The Master of Qingcheng school was just as frightened as his apprentices and his knuckles had turned white from gripping his sword.

Lin Pingzhi lifted his hand to his mouth, covering up a bored yawn then spun on his heels drawing the sword by his belt in the same movement. The Qingcheng apprentices closest to him had their heads sliced clean off by the wave of sword Qi released by Lin Pingzhi and the apprentices behind them got covered by the fountains of blood bursting from the stumps that used to be necks.

This horrendous sight was too much for the remaining apprentices and the turned to flee, but there was to be no escape. Lin Pingzhi dived into the fleeing men like a fox on a flock of hens. Within moments the air was thick with split blood and the ground littered with severed limbs. Through all this carnage danced Lin Pingzhi with a playful smile and a girlish giggle.

Yu Canghai stared at the decimation of his apprentices with a look of utter incomprehension, his numbed mind refusing to accept what he was seeing. Finally when Lin Pingzhi turned to face him, Yu Canghai knew that he was going to die. Quickly he looked around for a means of escape and his eyes found Yue Lingshan. Running as fast as he could the Master of Qingcheng school intended to use the woman as a human shield. Yue Lingshan raised her sword to defend herself but knew she had little chance of fending of her attacker.

“Lingshan!” screamed Linghu Chong from the carriage.

Yue Lingshan felt something tighten around her left wrist and looked down to see a thin sewing thread wrapped around it. Suddenly as if scooped up by an invisible hand she was lifted into the air and started flying towards the carriage. Half way to her destination Yue Lingshan was met in mid air by Dongfang Bai who caught her in an embrace before floating down to the carriage.

Linghu Chong looked at Yue Lingshan with relieved eyes that quickly turned into a guilty frown as his gaze drifted towards his lover. Xiao Bai's face was unreadable, but there was the slightest hint of anger and disappointment in her eyes which struck at the heart of her lover. Linghu Chong was almost grateful when the sounds of combat gave him an excuse to turn away from the accusing stare of his beloved.

Having failed to gain a hostage Yu Canghai had resolved to fight his way out. Knowing that he only had one chance to summoned all of his Qi power for the oncoming duel. His blade glowing jade green he struck with all his might at Lin Pingzhi. The blows that he launched would have killed a dozen men easily, but Lin Pingzhi parried them with mocking ease as he carried on advancing towards his enemy.

Despite his continued advancement Lin Pingzhi never made a single attack of his own, seemingly content to just fend of Yu Canghai's attack. Yu Canghai's blows grew more and more desperate as he was forced back by his opponent's unrelenting march, but no matter how power his strikes or whatever angle they came from Lin Pingzhi would neutralise them with a flick of his blade.

Yu Canghai had only one option left. Leaping backwards he hurled spears of green sword Qi at Lin Pingzhi, knowing that if this failed he would have no strength left. Despair overwhelmed him as his attack struck home. Lin Pingzhi swatted the Qi spears away as if they were nothing more than flying insects and continued walking towards Yu Canghai, his pace as unhurried as it was inevitable.

Sinking to his knees the exhausted Yu Canghai knew that his final gamble had failed and that he was now at the mercy of his enemy. Lin Pingzhi circled the fallen man his sword dangling in his hand. The were two flashes of light and Yu Canghai screamed in agony as the tendons to his limbs were severed. Working his foot under the now prostrate body of Yu Canghai, Lin Pingzhi flipped him onto his back.

Yu Canghai opened his mouth, but whether it was to scream or beg for mercy would never be known for his tongue was sent flying through the air. Thrusting like a fish on dry land Yu Canghai's body twitched as Lin Pingzhi continued in his stomach churning work. First he hacked of the man's ears, then split his lips, before slicing of his nose and finally finishing with piercing his eyes, all the time careful not to inflict a fatal blow.

Having deprived his victim of all his senses Lin Pingzhi turned around and left the man in a dark world filled only with pain. Looking at the faces of the Mount Heng apprentices he smiled at their terrified expression. More than one of the nuns had retched at the horrific tortures inflicted on Yu Canghai and even the ones that had kept the contents of their stomach had turned a sickly shade of green

Of all the eyes looking at him only two pairs did not hold fear or disgust. Dongfang Bai looked at him with the steady gaze of one predator to another, while Bai Xuesheng's emerald eyes showed amusement. Lin Pingzhi met those green orbs and smiled:

    “Disturbed Lord Bai?” he asked.

“Only at how sloppy you are” replied Bai Xuesheng with a smile equally as unsettling as the killer's.

Xiao Cuì looked at her lover hoping that his words were false bravado but suspecting that they were not.

    Taking of the masks

Linghu Chong sat in the common room of the inn and poured himself another cup of wine. As it was the second watch of the night, the room was deserted except for himself and few hardy drinkers for which he was grateful. The events of the last few days were still troubling him and he welcomed the opportunity for solitude. It was difficult enough to accept that his Shifu had become a half man let alone that he was the killer of Dingxian and Dingyi, but the facts were irrefutable.

Added to this was the knowledge that Lin Pingzhi had also mutilated himself in the same way, so destroying any chance of happiness for Yue Lingshan. Linghu Chong seriously considered losing himself in the blissful mist of drunkenness for a time. But he could not afford such a luxury for there was a problem he had to resolve immediately, that of Xiao Bai.

Ever since her rescue of Yue Lingshan, Xiao Bai had been very cold towards him and went to great lengths to avoid spending time alone with him. Even now she had made sure that they were staying in separate rooms making it clear that she was upset with him. Linghu Chong could not blame her, for her reaction was normal for anyone in the same situation. Xiao Bai had sacrificed a lot for him and the idea that he might have feelings for another woman would understandably upset her.

If truth be told even Linghu Chong himself was not quite sure of his own feelings. He had thought that his romantic feelings for Yue Lingshan were long dead, but the look in her eyes that night on the tower and the fear he felt when she was in danger made him doubt his own convictions. Now that Lin Pingzhi's actions had jeopardised their marriage, Linghu Chong could not help but ponder the possibility that he might be able to rekindle his relationship with his first love.

So engrossed was he in his thoughts that he did not notice his guest until Bai Xuesheng placed a basket on the table. Looking from the basket to the man Linghu Chong arched his brow in confusion:

“Its a peace offering for you to give to Xiao Bai.” answered Bai Xuesheng.

Linghu Chong opened the lid and saw a selection of sugared cakes:

“Where did you get these at this time of night?”

“Do you think that the great Lord of White Tiger Palace can't even get a few cakes.” replied Bai Xuesheng with a smile.

Nodding his thanks Linghu Chong picked up the basket and started making his way to Xiao Bai's room. Bai Xuesheng watched him for a while, then his gaze travelled up the stairs where he saw Xiao Cuì looking down from the balcony with a smile. As she descended the stairs his eyes travelled along her body drinking in her beauty. Sitting next to him she lightly kissed his lips before whispering:

“I think you deserve a little reward for being so considerate.”

“I think so too.” he replied with a twinkle in his eyes.

    ####

Linghu Chong gently knocked on Xiao Bai's door:

“Who is it?” asked his lover.

    “Its me.”

    “Come in.”

Linghu Chong smiled in relief at her quick reply and the absence of any anger in her voice. Perhaps this wouldn't be as difficult as he feared it was going to be. The smile was wiped from his face the moment he opened the door and saw Xiao Bai packing her belongings into a small sack:

“What are you doing?” he asked, with a slight quiver in his voice.

    “Packing of course.”

Blind panic engulfed him as he thought she was preparing to leave him. The fear of losing her cut through all his doubts and made him realize just how much she meant to him. Whatever feelings he might have for Yue Lingshan paled in comparison to what he and Xiao Bai shared. He knew without a shadow of a doubt that the woman standing in front of him was the only one he could love.

Dropping the basket he rushed forwards and wrapped his arms around her in a crushing embrace:

“I lost you once already and I'll never let it happen again. I swear that I'll never see Yue Lingshan again, but please don't leave me” the pleading tone in his voice would have elicited tears from a statue and Xiao Bai started shaking in his arms.

However Linghu Chong soon heard the unmistakable sound of her giggling. Relaxing his grip he looked into her face and saw that she was indeed giggling. Then he noticed his own travel sack packed and lying on her bed:

    “I've just made a fool of myself haven't I?”

“Yes, but please carry on.” Xiao Bai's smile was as delightful as it was mocking.

    “So what is going on?”

“I am packing in preparation to pursue Yue Lingshan and Lin Pingzhi.”

    “But why?”

“Lin Pingzhi's cruelty towards Yu Canghai does not bode well for Yue Lingshan. I know that you will never forgive yourself if anything happens to her.”

Linghu Chong stared into those doe-like eyes and offered up a silent prayer of thanks to whichever god it was that was looking down upon him the day he had won the heart of this wonderful woman:

    “I don't deserve you.”

“You better go back to your room and get some rest. I'll ask Xuesheng and Xiao Cuì to escort the Mount Heng apprentices home in the morning.”

“Rest can wait.” declared Linghu Chong as he took her in his arms and soon all thoughts of packing or sleep quickly disappeared.

    ####

Xiao Bai's smile was as radiant as the Sun as she basked in the freedom of travelling alone with the man that she loved. She hadn't realized how much she had missed being alone with Linghu Chong until now. It felt like being able to breath again after holding your breath of an eternity and although she knew that this couldn't last forever she allowed herself the small fantasy of imagining that it could.

Bai Xuesheng had had the foresight of instructing his people to keep an eye out for Lin Pingzhi and Yue Lingshan, when the couple had departed after the demise of Yu Canghai and so was able to provide them with the general direction of where they were travelling. Bai Xuesheng's men had been instructed to inform Linghu Chong and Xiao Bai of further details as they got them.

Linghu Chong turned to see Xiao Bai's smile and shared in her joy. Although he was worried for Yue Lingshan's safety, he couldn't help but smile back at his love. He imagined looking upon that lovely face everyday for the rest of his life and knew that there could be no greater pleasure in the world. Taking her hand he let out a sigh of sweet contentment.

    ####

Yue Buqun sat in his chair in the main hall of Mount Hua and stared down at his four kneeling apprentices as the received the letters he had written earlier:

“Each of you are to take these letters to one of the four schools and deliver them personally to each of the school's masters.”

“By your command my Lord” the apprentices replied in unison before backing out of the Hall.

Alone Yue Buqun looked at his surroundings and let out a sigh. This hall was to small and plain for something of his standing. He would have to engage the services of an architect to build a place worthy of him. He smiled at the thought of having a residence that truly reflected his glory then turned as he heard the footsteps of his wife as she entered the Hall:

“Husband has there been any word of Lingshan and Pingzhi?”

“Not yet my dear. But you needn't worry, they are newly-weds and have probably just wanted to spend some time alone.” Yue Buqun tried to sound comforting but their was no disguising his condescending tone.

“Even so I am still worried. They are both still so young. Lets go look for them.”

“Now don't be silly. We have no idea where to look. Besides I have just sent invitations to the heads of the other four schools to come to Repentance Cliff to view the lost arts of their schools. How could I possibly leave at a time like this.”

“You did what?!” asked Ning Zhongze disbelievingly. As her husband didn't answer she continued: “But Repentance Cliff if our sacred ground. How could you tolerate outsiders stepping foot on it.”

“The Five Schools have become one, so we are all one family now. Besides this is the best way for me to gain the loyalty of the schools and solidify my position.” Yue Buqun was starting to get a little annoyed at his wife and his voice had started taking on a slightly higher tone as he forgot to disguise it.

Ning Zhongze was to upset to notice this however. She was finally starting to realize that her husband had been planning this from the start. Stealing the Evil Resisting Sword, having their daughter study the lost art of the other Four Schools and supporting Zuo Lengshan's proposal to unite the Five Schools. All this was in order so that he could become Lord of the Five Schools. Looking up at the face she had stared at for all these decades she found herself looking at a stranger.

Secretly she hoped that Lingshan and Pingzhi would never come back.

    ####

Xiao Cuì gasped in awe as the first gate came into view. From the great stone blocks at the base to the soaring towers flanking the heavy wooden gate, everything about the structure spoke of power and endurance. Although not an experts in siege craft even she could see that any enemy attempting to take the fortification by force would take horrendous casualties and this was but the first of three gates.

It had been ten days since she and Bai Xuesheng had returned her fellow apprentices back to Mount Heng. Having completed their mission the two of them had travelled to Bai Xuesheng's home to wait for her sister and Linghu Chong, for they had agreed to meet them at White Tiger Palace as soon as they were sure that Yue Lingshan was safe. Throughout their journey Xiao Cuì had attempted to get information on her lover's home, but Bai Xuesheng would just smile his dazzling smile and tease that she would have a lifetime to learn about the Palace.

Xiao Cuì knew how powerful Bai Xuesheng's family was and had expected White Tiger Palace to by impressive, but nothing could have prepared her for just how grand the place really was. The island that the Palace was built on was large enough to hold a small town and the way that every building was vibrantly painted spoke of the wealth enjoyed by their occupants. Feeling a finger touch her chin and gently closing the mouth she didn't realize she had opened Xiao Cuì looked up to the face of her lover. Blushing at the amused look in his eyes she fixed her gaze firmly ahead hoping to spare herself any more embarrassment.

Bai Xuesheng suppressed a chuckle as he walked besides Xiao Cuì. Having grown up at the Palace he had grown accustomed to its grandeur and forgot the effect it had on people who were not use to it. However the joy he felt in his heart was not due to the prospect of being home, but was caused by the idea that he was bringing the future Mistress to the Palace with him.

He wondered if his father and grandfather felt the same way when they had brought their respective wives home? The thought brought a pang of sadness as he thought of how happy his parents would have been at meeting Xiao Cuì. Although he remembered very little about them he knew that they were good people and that they would have loved her as much as he did.

Dismissing the sad thought his mind started to drift to a more immediate problem. He hoped that his message to have all his concubines and dancing girls removed from the Palace had been received, otherwise the Palace might become a very uncomfortable place indeed.

Gazing at her husband through the fire, Yue Lingshan smiled contentedly to herself. They were in a clearing deep inside the woods, where they had decided to camp for the night. It had been half a month since Lin Pingzhi had succeeded in his quest for revenge and the past few days had been amongst the happiest of Yue Lingshan's life. Their days had been spent in idle travel sampling all the pleasures their surroundings could offer, from local delicacies to inspiring landscapes.

Her husband had been a wonderful companion, ever attentive to her needs and arranging endless forms of entertainments for her. There were however two clouds in this otherwise idyllic sky. The first was the way Lin Pingzhi would sometimes look at his wife when he thought she wouldn't notice. At these times his eyes would scrutinize her with frightening intensity as if he expected treachery from her at any moment.

The second was the lack of intimacy between them. Ever since his return Lin Pingzhi had refused to share his bed with Yue Lingshan, who being a well brought up lady was to modest to mention it, despite her sense of rejection at being so neglected by the man that she loved. Lin Pingzhi caught his wife's eye:

“We'll arrive at a small town in the morning. If you want I can hire you a horse and you can go back to Mount Hua.” Lin Pingzhi said in an emotionless matter of fact way.

Yue Lingshan was speechless with shock. How could her husband say such a thing. Surely she must have misunderstood him:

“Do you mean that we should go home?” she asked with a note of pleading in her voice.

Lin Pingzhi shook his head sadly: “No Lingshan, I meant you should go back alone.”

“Have I done something to upset you.” she asked in desperation.

He let out an exhausted sigh: “I have made the last few days as happy as possible for you and so have considered my duties as your husband complete.”

    “What are you talking about?”

“You can stop the play acting now. Your father has already learnt my family's Evil Resisting Sword and become the Lord of the Five Schools.”

“How dare you slander my father!”

“Oh please spare me your false indignation. Do you think your father would have stood any chance against Zuo Lengshan without the Evil Resisting Sword?”

Although Lin Pingzhi had arrived to late to witness the fight, he had heard from those present of how Yue Buqun had gained victory and knew that he had used the Evil Resisting Sword. Yue Lingshan wanted to defend her father but knew in the her heart that he had not used Mount Hua martial arts to defeat Zuo Lengshan. Both of them were silent for a long time until finally Yue Lingshan spoke quietly:

“Pingzhi, the fact that my father stole your family's Evil Resisting Sword cannot be denied. But please believe me when I say that I truly love you.”

The sincerity in her voice briefly touched his heart and Lin Pingzhi felt the urge to hold her in his arms. But the knowledge of what he had become crushed the impulse and he remained where he was. Smiling sadly he spoke:

“It doesn't matter whether I believe you or not, for we have no future together.”

“Do you really hate me and my father so much.”

Mocking laughter burst from Lin Pingzhi's lips:

“If only you knew the truth, then it would be you who would hate me.”

“I could never hate you.” cried Yue Lingshan as tears started tugging at the corners of the eyes.

“Very well, I will tell you the truth and then we can see how strong your love really is. Do you know what the price for learning the Evil Resisting Sword is? It is ones manhood” deranged laughter boomed out of Lin Pingzhi with the words as he attempted to disguise his own shame.

Shaking her head vigorously Yue Lingshan stumbled backwards repeating the words “No it can't be” as if it was some kind of mantra.

“Oh but it is my dear. Well do you still love me?”

Her silence was all the answer he needed:

“I didn't think so.” sneered Lin Pingzhi even as his heart wept at losing the only woman he had ever loved.

    Reluctantly Yue Lingshan spoke:

“So both you and my father are...”

“Eunuchs is the word you are looking for.”

Yue Lingshan fixed her eyes to the ground as heartfelt tears rolled down her face. In the space of an hour she had lost her entire world. The two men whom she loved and respected above all others have been revealed as monsters. How could she possibly face them any more? Yue Lingshan turned her back on her husband unable to face what he had become.

Lin Pingzhi gripped the sheath of his sword so tightly that the wood started to creak. In his heart he had hoped the Yue Lingshan would say that she still loved him and tell him that she would stay by his side no matter what. But like everyone else she cared only for herself. He could guess where she would go after leaving him. She would go back to Linghu Chong and tell him what had happened.

Then they would laugh at what he had become before rekindling their old love. The thought enraged Lin Pingzhi. Why should Linghu Chong be so fortunate to have two beautiful women when he was destined to a life of loneliness? Why should fate be so kind to him while being so unfair to Lin Pingzhi. No! If he couldn't have Yue Lingshan then no one would. With a scream he drew his sword and plunged it into her back piercing her heart.

“NO?” shouted someone from the trees. Lin Pingzhi looked up to see Linghu Chong and Dongfang Bai emerging form the trees. Linghu Chong's sword appeared to leap out of its sheath and dart towards Lin Pingzhi's neck. Pulling his sword free Lin Pingzhi blocked the blow and felt electricity run down his arm from the impact.

Linghu Chong pressed his attack, desperate to force Lin Pingzhi away from Yue Lingshan and Lin Pingzhi was soon retreating from his wrath. Yue Lingshan crumbled into the arms of Dongfang Bai all strength drained from her body. Slowly she turned her head and saw the men fighting. She wanted to plead with them to stop, to tell Linghu Chong not to hurt her husband, but she had no breath left within her body. With tears of despair she closed her eyes for the last time.

Lin Pingzhi backed away as Linghu Chong rained blows down on him like a blacksmith hammering upon metal, every stroke powered by an all consuming rage. Looking into his opponent's eyes Lin Pingzhi saw his murderous fury and quelled before it. He wanted to turn and run away but Linghu Chong was relentless in his attack and Lin Pingzhi knew that to turn his back on him would be to invite death.

Time was quickly running out for Lin Pingzhi as Linghu Chong pushed him deeper into the woods. The trees seemed to press down upon him and Lin Pingzhi knew that he would be defeated if he allowed Linghu Chong to pin him against one of them. With the savagery of a cornered animal he struck back with a flurry of lightning fast slashes. A faint red glow surrounded his blade as he channelled his Qi into it, allowing his sword to move at an unnatural speed.

Such an attack may have caught Linghu Chong by surprise once, but he had grown accustomed to fighting at a breakneck speed by his training with Dongfang Bai and as fast as Lin Pingzhi was, he was nothing compared to her. Reading every stroke as it came Linghu Chong neutralised them with perfectly timed positioning of his sword that both protected himself and exploited his opponent's weaknesses.

Having failed to gain the initiative Lin Pingzhi took his eyes of his opponent for a split second as he looked for a means of escape, a mistake that nearly cost him everything. Grabbing Lin Pingzhi's left hand with his own Linghu Chong activated the Art of Star Absorption. Lin Pingzhi's eyes widened in shock as his Qi started leaving his body and brought his sword down in an attempt to force Linghu Chong to let go.

Linghu Chong parried the attack then another and another. Faster and faster came Lin Pingzhi's attacks as he tried to break away from the energy sapping grip. But no matter how fast he struck or from whatever inconceivable angle his sword came from, Linghu Chong would read the lines of attack from the subtle movements of his body and position his sword to counter it.

Feeling the blows grow gradually slower Linghu Chong knew that Lin Pingzhi was reaching the end of his strength. Then suddenly Lin Pingzhi hurled his sword in the direction of the women. Dongfang Bai brushed the blade aside with ease but Lin Pingzhi had never intended to hit her. Linghu Chong had allowed himself to be distracted by the threat to his lover and gave Lin Pingzhi the opening he needed. Slapping Linghu Chong's wrist with his right hand Lin Pingzhi was finally able to break free.

Leaping backwards Lin Pingzhi reached into his sleeve and pulled out a handful of needles which he hurled at Linghu Chong with the last of his waning strength. Jumping backwards Linghu Chong's sword became a whirlwind of steel as he knocked away the needles. However as his feet touch the ground he saw Lin Pingzhi fleeing into the woods at a speed that he could not catch.

With a last disgusted look at the coward, Linghu Chong hurried to where Dongfang Bai was holding Yue Lingshan. His lover looked at him and gently shook her head as she held the unmoving body of Yue Lingshan. Taking his first love in his arms Linghu Chong screamed his pain to the heavens. Dongfang Bai got to her feet and walked away knowing that this was a moment her lover needed to face alone.

Cradling Yue Lingshan in his arms Linghu Chong wept like a babe, his mind beset by memories of the happy times they had spent together. He cursed Lin Pingzhi for what he had done and then himself for not killing that wretched creature before he could harm Yue Lingshan. In his heart he made a silent vow to kill Lin Pingzhi and if Lin Pingzhi could see the conviction in Linghu Chong's eyes then he would know that there was nowhere in the world that would be safe for him.

    Uneasy Alliance

Zuo Lengshan sat cross-legged in the centre of the windowless room, his bared blade resting on his lap. The darkness surrounding him no longer hindered him as it once did and he sat perfectly still as he homed his remaining senses. Dozens of tiny bronze bells dangled from the ceiling around him and swayed gently in the still air. The strings attaching the bells to the ceiling were all tied to a single rope with a candle burning through its base.

Quickly the flame ate through the rope and the bells came crashing down around Zuo Lengshan. Shooting to his feet Zuo Lengshan spun around and unleashed a wave of sword Qi. Over half the falling bells were struck by the wave and flung to the sides of the room where they buried themselves deep into the wooden walls, while the other bells clattered on the floor.

Clenching his sword the Master of Mount Song tried to control his frustration. He was still along way from developing his other senses to the point where they could compensate for his lost eyesight, but it was a start. A hesitant knock came from the closed door:

“What is it?” growled Zuo Lengshan annoyed at the intrusion.

“I am sorry to disturb you my Lord but we have an unexpected guest.” replied Dèng Bāgōng

“I don't care you deal with it!”

“I think it is best if you meet him my Lord.”

Zuo Lengshan knew that Dèng Bāgōng would only insist on him meeting this person if he was very important and his interest was piqued. Opening the door he allowed the Mount Song elder to guide him to the Main Hall where his guest waited.

    ###

Lin Pingzhi rose to his feet as Zuo Lengshan and Dèng Bāgōng entered the hall. Bowing deeply he addressed his hosts:

“Lin Pingzhi at your service Master Zuo.”

Zuo Lengshan took his seat then dismissed Dèng Bāgōng before gesturing for Lin Pingzhi to be seated. After his guest complied he spoke:

“To what to I owe the pleasure of your visit young sir?”

“First I would like to apologize for not attending the meeting to decide the Lordship of the Five Schools and to offer my well wishes that your honourable self will recover soon from your injury.” Lin Pingzhi spoke the words with a voice as smooth as silk and would have convinced most people of his sincerity.

Zuo Lengshan however was too astute to be taken in. He knew very well that Lin Pingzhi was Yue Buqun's son-in-law and so would have little concern for his well-being. Yet Zuo Lengshan was interested to find out why the young man would come to Mount Song, despite knowing that he was unlikely to be welcomed and so kept a civil tone when he replied:

“Young sir is to kind. Please convey my thanks to Lord Yue.”

“Master Zuo is mistaken, I have come of my own accord and not from Yue Buqun's bidding.”

“Oh, and why would you do such a thing?”

“I have a proposition for you.”

    “And what might that be?”

“The means for you to regain your former position and get revenge on Yue Buqun.”

Zuo Lengshan felt his heart quicken at the idea revenge, but kept his voice calm:

“And what do you want for such a great gift.”

    “Sanctuary.”

Zuo Lengshan nodded slowly. It seems that his guest had run into some trouble, perhaps he could turn this to his advantage. Lin Pingzhi smiled as he saw Zuo Lengshan taking the bait and knew that his plan was on its way to success.

Xiao Cui shooed the last of the maids out of her room then closed the door with a heavy sigh. Ever since her arrival at White Tiger Palace nearly half a month ago, she been waited upon hand and foot, with servants pandering to her every whim from preparing her food to dressing her. Unused to such pampering she was getting increasingly frustrated and it was only her natural politeness which prevented her from losing her temper.

Sitting at her dressing table she started seeing to her make up when there was a knock on her door:

“I can look after myself, please leave.” she said in the most level tone of voice she could still manage.

Hearing the door open she spun around ready to unleash her pent up anger when she saw Bai Xuesheng's handsome face. For propriety's sake they were staying in separate rooms and had kept their intimacy as discreet as possible. As he walked into the room his face split into an impish grin:

“I am perfectly aware of what you are capable of my dear.”

“Now my Lord, it is inappropriate for you to enter a young lady's room at this time of day.” replied Xiao Cui with a smile that mirrored his own.

“But I have urgent news which cannot wait.”

“Oh, and what could be so important as to warrant such a breach in etiquette?”

His smile faded as he sat down next to her:

“News from Mount Heng. Yue Buqun has invited all the Masters and elders of the Five Schools to meet at Mount Hua in order to view the lost arts of their various schools.”

“What is that old fox up to?”

“Most likely trying to bolster his precarious position as Lord of the Five Schools.”

“We must tell Linghu Dage and Jie Jie”

“I have already sent a message to them. But there's no need to worry, the meeting isn't due for a couple of months time.”

His smile returning Bai Xuesheng picked up a brush from the table:

“You know I am quite a talented artist. Do you think I can apply that skill to painting your eyebrows.”

“I am all yours my Lord.” replied Xiao Cui in a voice that made it clear he could do a lot more than just paint her brow. It was an offer he could not refuse.

Lin Pingzhi danced around the garden as if he didn't have a care in the world with the midday Sun reflecting along his trailing blade. Frost glistened along the ground wherever he stepped leaving a silvery trail. Despite the gaiety of the dance its deadly purpose was unmistakable with every thrust of the blade filled with murderous intent. Pirouetting quickly he released three waves of freezing Qi energy along the ground, each wave spreading out wider than the last, until the entire floor sparkled in icy brilliance.

Stopping in a defensive stance he spent a moment to admire his blade that was glowing a ruby red while being encased in a thin layer of ice. A slow clapping came from behind Lin Pingzhi followed by Zuo Lengshan's voice:

“Well done Brother Lin. Your progress in the Freezing Inner Energy is most impressive.”

Turning around Lin Pingzhi did not bother to hide the contempt in his eyes. He had hit upon the idea of coming to Mount Song over a month ago, knowing that his murder of Yue Lingshan would cause both Linghu Chong and Yue Buqun to hunt him down. To secure the support of Zuo Lengshan he had offered both his skills and the secret of the Evil Resisting Sword in exchange for sanctuary and Zuo Lengshan's Freezing Inner Energy.

Having tasted the potency of Linghu Chong's Art of Star Absorption, Lin Pingzhi knew that he needed to find away to counter this. He had heard of Zuo Lengshan's victory over Linghu Chong at Shaolin and knew that the Freezing Inner Energy offered his best chance of defeating his enemy. Having studied the art of over a month he was just starting to grasps its essence, but knew he needed to dedicate a lot more time to it in order to develops its full potential:

“Master Zuo is to kind. By the way have you given any more thoughts to the perquisite requirement for studying the Evil Resisting Sword?”

“I have already lost my eyes, so I don't think it would be wise for me to further mutilate myself.”

“Very well, then we will discuss this matter no more. Has there been any news of Yue Buqun.”

“That old fox has summoned everyone to meet at Mount Hua, where he intends to share the lost arts of the Five Schools.”

“A clever way to bolster his position. When is the meeting due.”

    “In about a month.”

“Good, that gives us time to make preparations.”

“With our combined skills we will surely send that old fox into the afterlife.”

“And with me to follow.” thought Lin Pingzhi to himself. He knew that Zuo Lengshan would betray him the moment Yue Buqun was vanquished, but he was not going to give this snake the chance. When Yue Buqun was dealt with they would have a reckoning.

    ####'

Lin Pingzhi sat at a table in his room enjoying a nightcap when he heard someone pass by. Grabbing his sword he ran to the window and thrust it open to see a shadow leaping over the wall. Whoever it was had moved at a speed that rivalled his own and this piqued his interest. Leaping out of the window he pursued the elusive visitor to an open field where the mysterious figure stood alone.

As Lin Pingzhi got closer the figure revealed itself to be a woman, whose beauty was as illuminating as the moonlight that bathed the field. Lin Pingzhi stopped a safe distance from the woman and strained his senses trying to detect an ambush. But the only people in the field was himself and the strange woman. The woman bowed deeply as she introduced herself:

“Ren Yingying at your service young sir.”

“Lin Pingzhi, glad to make your acquaintance Lady Ren. But if you would forgive my bluntness I would like to know why you have lured me here?”

“Very well, I will come straight to the point. I have come to warn you of a great peril to your life.”

Lin Pingzhi's hand started drifting towards the hilt of his sword, but Yingying held her open hands up in a gesture of peace:

“You misunderstand me young sir. The peril I am referring to is Zuo Lengshan.”

Lin Pingzhi bursts out laughing: “I am well aware of how treacherous he is. But at present we are useful to each other.”

“And what happens when your usefulness comes to an end?”

“Then I will show him who is the real power in our partnership.”

Yingying shook her head slowly, like a teacher correcting a dull pupil: “Although I do not doubt your prowess, you are just one person and Zuo Lengshan has an entire school. You maybe able to kill him but there is no guarantee that you would survive either.”

Lin Pingzhi was silent for a moment as he digested her words. The more he thought about it the more he realized that Yingying spoke the truth. Even if he killed Yue Buqun and Zuo Lengshan there is no way he could make the Five Schools submit to him. He could always escape but would have to live the life of a fugitive hunted by both Mount Song and Mount Hua, not to mention Linghu Chong.

Yingying smiled as she saw her words take their desired effect:

“I have a proposition which will not only ensure your survival but also give you all the power you would ever need.”

Lin Pingzhi studied his beautiful companion for a moment unsure whether any deals made with her would be any safer than those made with Zuo Lengshan:

“And the price I would have to pay for this power?” he asked reluctantly

“Yes there is always a price.” replied Yingying her smile turning wicked as she saw him taking the bait.

    ####

Linghu Chong knelt in front of Yue Lingshan's grave his mind filled with bitter-sweet memories of their childhood together. Now looking back at those times with adult eyes he realized blissful ignorance really was. Had he really once believed that he and Yue Lingshan were destined for each other, or that his Shifu really was a hero. A part of him desperately wanted to be that naïve boy again.

Footsteps from behind brought him back to the present and he turned to see Xiao Bai walking towards him carry two baskets. One was filled with food for him and the other with offerings for Yue Lingshan. He smiled as she approached and knew that no matter how painful his present was, he would gladly endure tenfold as much if it would bring him to her. Xiao Bai handed him the basket containing the food then knelt besides him and started taking out the offerings.

After paying her respects to Yue Lingshan she turned to her lover:

“There is news from Mount Heng.”

Linghu Chong tried unsuccessfully to keep the frown from his face as he nodded for her to continue:

“Yue Buqun has called a meeting at Mount Hua.”

“I need to go to Mount Hua to tell Shiniang about the death of Lingshan anyway.” he replied with a resigned sigh.

Xiao Bai nodded: “I'll go with you to the foot of Mount Hua, where I'll find an inn to stay in.”

Linghu Chong looked deep into her eyes and wondered how such a perfect creature could exist in the mortal world. By offering to stay at the foot of Mount Hua she would avoid any unpleasantness her presence might cause at the school when he delivered the distressing news, thus lessoning the difficulty of the task. Taking her hand he looked at her with eyes filled with gratitude and received a gentle smile.

When the last of the offerings was burnt the couple got to their feet and returned to a nearby cottage they had been staying in to prepare for a journey neither of them wanted to make.

    ####

Zhang Chéng warmed his hands on one of the braziers placed along this stretch of the wall and looked up at the faces of half a dozen fellow Mount Song apprentices doing the same. They were all part of the night watch and resented doing a task they all thought was pointless. After all who in their right mind would try to attack Mount Song. Suddenly he heard someone coming up the stairs and strained his eyes into night to see who it was.

Lin Pingzhi emerged into view and waved to them. Zhang Chéng bowed to him politely:

“How may I be of service to you young sir.” as much as Zhang Chéng hated grovelling to the pompous boy, orders had come from Master Zuo directly that Lin Pingzhi was to be treated with the utmost respect and he didn't dare incur his Master's wrath.

“I am here to relieve you.” replied Lin Pingzhi with a smile that Zhang Chéng did not like.

    “I have no orders to...”

The needles flew so fast that the Mount Song apprentices never saw them. Silently they sank to the floor and died at Lin Pingzhi's feet. After checking that they were all dead Lin Pingzhi rushed down to the gate and through them open. Quickly dozens of men garbed in black emerged from the shadows and ran inside. Separating into their designated groups they hurried of to complete the sinister tasks that they had been given. As the last of the men disappeared Lin Pingzhi walked back into the school to finish his own mission.

    ####

A gentle knock woke Zuo Lengshan and he instinctively reached for the sword hidden under his pillow:

    “Whose there?”

    “Its me Lin Pingzhi.”

    “What do you want?”

“I have something important to discuss with you Master Zuo.”

    “Can't it wait until morning?”

    “I am afraid not.”

Rising to a sitting position Zuo Lengshan kept his hand on the hilt of his hidden weapon and invited Lin Pingzhi in. When he heard the man stepping into his room he spoke:

    “Well Brother Lin?”

“I have come to discuss our agreement.”

    “What...”

The sharp ring of a sword leaving its sheath was all the warning Zuo Lengshan got as a wave of sword Qi came hurtling towards him. Pulling out his own sword Zuo Lengshan sent his own wave of sword Qi to counter the attack. The two waves met in the middle the room and the energy released blasted apart every window from within. Lin Pingzhi was upon his prey while the blast still rang in the air and Zuo Lengshan was hard pressed to survive the lightning fast attacks.

Summoning all of his strength Zuo Lengshan sent a wall of Qi energy rippling outwards from his body. The wall quickly expanded until it covered the entire room, crushing every piece of furniture it met into rubble. Lin Pingzhi was forced out of the room by the release of energy and Zuo Lengshan took the opportunity to leap out of a window to scream for his guards.

The sound of running feet came rushing towards him and Zuo Lengshan turned to where he'd heard Lin Pingzhi exiting the room:

“Kill this treacherous brat!” he shouted at the top his voice and awaited for his men to atttack his enemy. Attack they did but to his shock he heard their blades come towards him. Parrying and dodging furiously Zuo Lengshan backed away until he reached a wall. With a sweep of his sword he unleashed a wave sword Qi in a semi circle around himself forcing his assailants back:

“Have you all gone mad?!” he yelled.

“No Master Zuo, they have not. They are just not your apprentices.” Lin Pingzhi's gloating tone infuriated Zuo Lengshan and he lost all sense of reason. Rushing forwards he let out a deafening battle-cry and headed straight for Lin Pingzhi.

Massive sweeps from his sword killed anyone who tried to block his way leaving a trail of mangled corpses in his wake. The Master of Mount Song however was not having it all his own way, his body bled from dozens of small cuts and nicks but the red mist had descended blocking out any feelings of pain.

Finally after what felt like an eternity of hacking through an endless tide of bodies Zuo Lengshan fought his way to Lin Pingzhi and brought his sword down in a murderous arch to where he smelt the man's sickening perfume. The blade met no resistance and plunged deep into the ground. A searing pain shot across Zuo Lengshan's back and he spun around with his sword lashing out.

The blow was turned aside and Zuo Lengshan received a cut to his left cheek from Lin Pingzhi. Leaping backwards Zuo Lengshan took a defensive pose and strained his senses trying to find his elusive enemy. Mocking laughter reached his ears:

"Come now Master Zuo is that the best you..."

Zuo Lengshan attacked in the direction of the taunting voice hoping to catch Lin Pingzhi unawares, but his clumsy stroke was blocked with more mocking laughter. His torture continued with several minutes as Lin Pingzhi continued evading his attacks while inflicting small cuts onto his rapidly weakening body. Finally Lin Pingzhi grew tired of this, stepping behind Zuo Lengshan he plunged his sword into his back and twisted savagely severing his spine.

As the Master of Mount Song lay dying at his feet, Lin Pingzhi leaned down and whispered into his ear:

"Don't worry, I'll send Yue Buqun to join you soon." These where the last words Zuo Lengshan ever heard.

    ####

Zuo Jinbao stumbled into the Main Hall and fell to his knees. Looking over his shoulder he cast a murderous glare at Yingying who had taken him from his room and marched him to the Hall. A laugh from the front of the Hall made him refocus his attention there where he saw Lin Pingzhi sitting on his father's throne and Zuo Lengshan's body lying at his feet.

Xiang Wentian walked into the Hall behind Zuo Jinbao and tossed some items to the ground in front of him. With a shock he realised that they were the severed heads of Dèng Bāgōng, Gao Kexin, Tang Ying'e and Zhong Zhen. Pressing his head to the floor Zuo Jinbao kowtowed in despeartion:

"Please Brother Lin, don't hurt me. I'll leave Mount Song immediately. You'll never see me again. I beg you just let me live."

"I have no intention of harming you Brother Zuo. In fact a plan on making you the new head of Mount Song."

    ####

All the apprentices of Mount Song were assembled in the now cleaned up Main Hall and awaited the announcement they had been called to hear. Zuo Jinbao stepped in front of the throne with Lin Pingzhi and Yingying flanking him. Zuo Jinbao spoke in his loudest voice:

"Fellow apprentices of Mount Song. It grieves me to inform you that last night our school was struck by a great tragedy. The evil Bai Xuesheng infiltrated into here last night and assissinated my beloved father along with several elders of our school."

A collective gasps went up from the apprentices quickly followed by nervous talking and cries of outrage. Raising his arms Zuo Jinbao restored order and continued:

"Luckily for us Brother Lin and his friends were able to fight that fiend of and prevent the total distruction of our school." Zuo Jinbao paused for a moment before continuing:

"In light of these events, I will temporarily take up the leadership of our school and in recognition of Brother Lin's services I appoint him as the First Guardian of Mount Song."

Stunned silence greeted the words, then someone from the back started cheering:

"Hail Master Zuo. Hail First Guardian Lin" the cheer started gathering momentum until the whole Hall started to rang with the wild cheers celebrating the new Masters of Mount Song.

    Trapping the fox

Lin Pingzhi knocked gently on Yingying's door then entered on receiving her permission. She was sat at her dressing table tending to her make up and did not turn to greet him. Walking up behind her he admired her selection of beauty products which included intoxicating perfumes, expensive rouges and the finest jewellery. He was most interested in a box of pink rouge that had the delicate smell of roses.

Yingying noticed him looking at the box and picked it up:

"Be my guest." she said as she offered it to him.

Lin Pingzhi smiled his thanks as he accept the gift then bringing the box to his nose inhaled deeply:

    "Truly exquisite."

"If you want I'll arrange for a box to be sent to you every month."

    "Lady Ren is too kind."

Finishing her make up Yingying rose to her feet:

"How are preparations for the next stage of our plan?"

"I have drawn up the map to Repentance Cliff and made copies for everyone that needs them. Xiang Wentian has been given his instructions as to how to handle Zuo Jinbao in our absence."

"Good, then we'll start our journey after breakfast."

Lin Pingzhi offered his arm which Yingying took with a pleasant smile and allowed him to escourt her outside.

Bai Xuesheng and Xiao Cui arrived at the foot of Mount Hua three days prior to when the meeting between the Five Schools was to take place. Although neither of them had much interest in the promised lost arts of the schools, they had decided to come to Mount Hua in order to provide secret support for Linghu Chong and Xiao Bai in case of trouble.

So as to keep their presence hidden, they were posing as the niece and nephew of a local rice merchant named Chun Fei, who was in actuality one of Bai Xuesheng's spies. Bai Xuesheng was greatly amused at how the man would wince every time he called him uncle, as if he was afraid Heaven would strike him down for the offence of posing as his Lord's elder.

Having explored the town they were staying in, the two of them had found a restaurant whose upper level looked down onto the main road leading up to Mount Hua school. So they had reserved the table that gave the best view of the road and spent the last two days looking out for their friends. Today however they were informed by the restaurant's owner that someone else had taken their table and had refused to leave despite the owner's efforts to move them.

With a mixture of curiosity and frustration Bai Xuesheng ascended the stairs with Xiao Cui following him. His lover cast concerened stares at him, but whether these were for his safety or that of the person that had taken their table was unknown. Bai Xuesheng kept the surprise from his face as he saw Lin Pingzhi sitting at the table but his mind started running through possible reasons for the man's presence.

Lin Pingzhi spotted them and rose with a salute:

"Lord Bai. This is an unexpected pleasure" declared Lin Pingzhi with false sincerity

"Brother Lin" replied Bai Xuesheng in an emotionless voice.

    "What brings you here?"

    "We are just passing through."

"In that case, would you care to join me?"

Nodding their acceptance the couple took the seats opposite him while a waiter served them tea before departing. Lin Pingzhi took a sip of his drink before speaking:

"Lord Bai, it has come to my attention that our two families have some history together."

    "Yes, our grandfathers were friends."

"Friends? I thought that they were rivals?"

"Not at all, my grand-papa often told me of how much he admired Elder Lin's 72 Evil Resisting sword." replied Bai Xuesheng with a warm smile

"I am afraid that I cannot repay the compliment for my grandfather passed away before I was born. However as my family's Evil Resisting sword is peerless under Heaven, I doubt my grandfather thought the same of Elder Bai."

Bai Xusheng kept his smile and his temper in check, refusing to show any reaction to the insult. Instead he took a sip of his tea:

"I do not doubt Elder Lin's matchless prowess, but I mourn for the fact that his skills could not be preserved. Otherwise the Qingcheng school would never have gained dominance over Fuwei Escort Agency."

Lin Pingzhi bristled at the statement but could think of no retort. Angered at being so easily outmanoeured he made a quick flick of his fingers along the table and sent a chopstick flying towards Xiao Cui. Bai Xuesheng tossed his teacup to intercept the attack and the chopstick shattered from the impact. The cup continued hurtling towards Lin Pingzhi who had to lean over backwards to avoid it. As he returned to his sitting position he lifted his sheathed sword in a reverse left handed grip to block a palm strike from Bai Xuesheng.

With a short sharp push Bai Xuesheng sent Lin Pingzhi skidding across the room and the latter had to stab his sword deep into the wooden floorboard in order to stop himself. Lin Pingzhi reached for the hilt of his sword with his right hand and Bai Xuesheng prepared for battle then suddenly a sharp whistle came from the streets below. Lin Pingzhi's face twisted with rage and frustration:

"It looks like we will have to settle this another day, Lord Bai." with these words he leapt out of the window.

"This is not a good sign." said Xiao Cui.

"We had better find Linghu Chong and your sister."

It was a statement Xiao Cui agreed with wholeheartedly.

Yue Buqun smiled as he watched the crowd making their way into the cave. This was his moment of triumph and he savoured the sensation of superiority as he looked upon the mass of faces. Every one of them wore expressions that were a mixed of gratitude and awe as they looked upon the lost arts of their schools.

What they didn't know was that Yue Buqun had employed a team of masons who had been spending the last few months altering the engravings, in order to eliminate the most powerful techniques. Yue Buqun was not about to take the chance of anyone becoming a potential threat to himself. However the techniques were truly profound, so he had secretly made rubbings of them before hand, in order to study them at his leisure.

These fools that were now observing the altered engravings believed that they were looking at the most powerful depictions of their arts, when in fact Yue Buqun was the only true Master of the arts of the Five Schools. There were however a few things that prevented this moment from being perfect.

The absence of Ning Zhongze had caused him the loss of a little face and he was already hearing whispers about the troubles within his household. His wife had refused to attend the gathering on the grounds that it was sacrilege to have outsiders on Mount Hua's sacred ground. Even now Yue Buqun felt a little peeved at how she stubbornly refused to see the bigger picture of how in breaking a few silly rules he would be cementing his rule.

This however was only a minor irritation. Of greater concern was the lack of representatives from North Mount Heng and Mount Song. It would seem that he would have to deal with these dissidents soon. He was roused from his musing when one of his apprentices informed him that the last of the crowd had entered the cave. Putting on his most authoritarian expression Yue Buqun walked towards the cave-mouth.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw the apprentice he had just been talking to scamper of. This was unusual as his apprentices knew better than to leave before being dismissed. Yue Buqun tried to remember the man's name then realized that he did not recognize him at all. Quickly he looked around for anything out of the ordinary and noticed a small spark from behind a rock.

Looking closer he was horrified to discover that it was a burning fuse attached to several barrels. Being to faraway to stop the rapidly shortening fuse, Yue Buqun had no choice but to save his own skin and ran back outside, mere seconds before the entire cave erupted in a series of deafening explosions. Throwing himself flat on the ground Yue Buqun felt the intense heat of the blast wash over his back and knew that it was only his supernatural speed that had saved him from the fate of being buried alive along with the other members of the Five Schools.

As the dust cleared Yue Buqun picked himself up and saw Lin Pingzhi standing before him. His son-in-law was smiling menacingly and his drawn sword was resting on the neck of Ning Zhongze who was kneeling paralysed at his feet. Flanking Lin Pingzhi were half a dozen men armed with short swords. With a voice laced with venom Lin Pingzhi spoke:

“So you managed to evade my little trap. I guess I shouldn't be surprise that a rat like you would find a way to survive.”

Without wasting words Yue Buqun's right hand darted into his left sleeve and he hurled a handful of needles at his enemies. The action took less than a fraction of a second and the needles flew even faster, leaving no time for anyone but Lin Pingzhi to react. Matching Yue Buqn's blinding speed he deflected away the needle that was meant for his throat. His men however were not so lucky as the missiles aimed at them all found their marks and they all fell lifelessly to the ground.

With a sweep of his arm Yue Buqun sent a bolt of red lightning at Lin Pingzhi. Grabbing Ning Zhongze by the shoulder Lin Pingzhi used her as a human shield and the lightning struck her chest. The energy within the bolt broke the seals on her acupoints that Lin Pingzhi had placed and Ning Zhongze let out an anguished scream as she succumbed to the death inflicted at her husband's hands.

Lin Pingzhi hurled the dead woman at her murderer and Yue Buqun brushed her aside without a second thought then stalked towards his enemy. Twin waves of sword Qi came rushing towards Yue Buqun, but he danced to the left and right evading them easily before launching himself at his attacker. So concentrated was Yue Buqun on killing Lin Pingzhi that he failed to notice the whip that was flying towards his back. The leather wrapped around his legs causing him to fall face down on the dirt.

Yue Buqun recovered his senses just in time to see Lin Pingzhi's sword lunging towards him. With his legs still trapped all he could do was swing to the side and narrowly avoid the deadly blade. Lin Pingzhi followed the lunge with a palm strike from his free hand. Yue Buqun felt his ribs crack as the palm struck his chest before the force of the blow sent him flying through the air.

There was a sharp stab to his back and Yue Buqun found himself unable to move. Desperately he summoned his Qi to try and break the seal on his acupoint. But whoever had paralysed him was at least as strong as he was and the Qi power refused his command. Completely helpless Yue Buqun landed roughly and lay motionless on the ground at the mercy of his vanquishers.

A woman he didn't recognize stepped in front of him and saluted in mock humility:

“Ren Yingying at your service Lord Yue.” she said.

Lin Pingzhi stepped into view and raised his sword slowly, but found his way barred by a raised arm from Yingying:

“Get out of my way Lady Ren.” demanded Lin Pingzhi.

“He can be of use to us.”

    “We cannot trust him.”

“We can with this.” reaching into her chest Yingying pulled out a small bottle which she uncorked. Dropping a pill into her palm she crouched besides Yue Buqun and forced it into his mouth where it dissolved instantly. After checking that the pill had taken effect she unsealed his acupoints. Yue Buqun immediately summoned his Qi to try and expel the poison, but Yingying laughed at his efforts:

“That was the Sanshi Naosheng Pill, already the poison is seeping into your brain.”

“Why are you doing this?!” roared Yue Buqun.

“Don't worry Lord Yue, so long as you obey me I promise that you will receive a yearly remedy to suppress the poison.”

Yue Buqun glared at them for a moment, with bloody murder in his eyes. But eventually his sense of self-preservation won out and he sank to his knees:

“I am at your service Lady Ren” he said through gritted teeth.

    Yingying turned to Lin Pingzhi:

“Well young sir? Is this arrangement acceptable to you?”

The smile he gave in reply was far from friendly. Suddenly the all turned towards the path leading up the cliff to see a man running towards them. On reaching the top of the cliff the man bowed deeply to Yingying:

“Holy Lady we have spotted Linghu Chong making his way up Mount Hua.”

    “Who does he travel with.”

    “He travels alone Holy Lady.”

“Well today is indeed a day of unexpected gifts.” said Lin Pingzhi. As his companions looked at him his smile broadened. Turning to Yue Buqun he continued:

“Well Lord Yue, it seems you have an opportunity to prove your newly declared loyalty. However I think we will need the assistance of your recently departed wife.”

Yingying caught onto his plan immediately and although she agreed with it, she added one condition before allowing them to carry it out.

    ####

Having left Xiao Bai in an inn at the foot of Mount Hua, Linghu Chong was making his way to the school using one of the lesser known side paths that cut through the woods. He had no desire to see Yue Buqun and was hoping to sneak into the school in order to inform Ning Zhongze of her daughter's death. He'd been unable to sleep for the last few nights as he tried to come up with a way to break the news gently to his Shiniáng, but all his efforts had been in vain as the task proved impossible.

So lost was he in his thoughts that he didn't even notice that Lin Pingzhi was waiting for him further up the path, until he was only a few feet away. As he lifted his gaze Linghu Chong saw Ning Zhongze propped up against a tree next to Lin Pingzhi. His Shiniáng's eyes were closed making it obvious that she was unconscious. Smiling amicably Lin Pingzhi greeted Linghu Chong as if they were the closest of friends:

“Brother Linghu, what a pleasant surprise to see you again.”

Walking forwards at a steady pace Linghu Chong replied:

    “Let my Shiniáng go.”

“Now is that any way to greet a fellow apprentice of Mount Hua?”

“I won't ask again. Let her go” The deadly calm of his voice contrasted with the boiling emotions in his heart which screamed for violent release. If Lin Pingzhi had any inkling of how much danger he was in then he would have fled immediately. Instead he slowly drew his sword and inched it towards Ning Zhongze's chest:

“Very well I will release her. Into the next world!” said Lin Pingzhi as he plunged the sword into her heart.

Linghu Chong lunged forward and drew his sword in the same movement, sending a wave of sword Qi at Lin Pingzhi. Wrenching his sword free Lin Pingzhi countered with his own wave of sword Qi which collided with Linghu Chong's in an ear-splitting thunderclap. Moving in the wake of his own attack Linghu Chong was upon his enemy while the thunderclap still echoed in the air, his sword snaking out in a series of vicious stabs aimed at the throat eyes and chest.

However unlike their previous encounter, this time Lin Pingzhi was ready for him. His body became as slippery as an eel's as he evaded the deadly barrage. Using his supernatural speed he gracefully weaved in and out of striking distance often taunting his opponent by allowing his blade to pass within a hairsbreadth of him. Already driven to the brink of madness by the death of his Shiniáng, Linghu Chong took the bait all to easily and his attacks becoming ever more chaotic as his anger consumed him.

Slipping past a clumsy over head slash Lin Pingzhi stepped in front of Linghu Chong, so close that there was only a few inches between their faces. Distracted by his opponent's sudden close proximity Linghu Chong nearly missed the underhand stab aimed at his leg. At the last possible moment before the blade sank into his flesh, Linghu Chong was able to twist his body and turned what should have been a crippling injury into a shallow cut across his left thigh.

The pain cut through the red mist that had descended upon his mind and forced clarity back into his thoughts. Linghu Chong counter attacked quickly but this time with his usual surgical precision, aiming for weaknesses within Lin Pingzhi's movements he remembered from their last battle. Lin Pingzhi continued his dance of death concentrating on Linghu Chong's injured left side, but to no avail as Linghu Chong read every attack. Positioning his sword so as to exploit every opening Lin Pingzhi's attacks created he was able to force his opponent to abandon them before they could strike home.

Lin Pingzhi was soon driven back by the unbelievably accurate attacks, but still kept the infuriating smile on his face. Linghu Chong knew that he was trying to goad him but refused to let himself be tricked again and continued to calmly press against his opponent. Finally after over a hundred strokes Lin Pingzhi's foot slipped. Linghu Chong's sword came crashing down to finish the duel and was hastily blocked. The force of the blow drove Lin Pingzhi to he knees and Linghu Chong followed with a palm strike to his face.

The palm strike was intercepted by Lin Pingzhi's free hand and Linghu Chong closed his trap. Activating his 'Art of Star Absorption' Linghu Chong smiled as he felt the inrush of power. This time he was going to drain every last drop of power from this wretched creature and send him into the afterlife. Suddenly a familiar sense of numbing coldness started seeping into his bones. With a shock Linghu Chong realized that Lin Pingzhi was using the 'Freezing Inner Energy'.

Luckily for Linghu Chong his opponent's mastery of the skill was still in its infancy, otherwise he would already have been immobilised. With a massive act of wil Linghu Chong kicked Lin Pingzhi in the chest sending him sprawling across the ground. Then summoning his Qi he concentrated on suppressing the icy cold that was creeping across his body.

The rustling of silk in the wind told him that someone was coming up behind him and Linghu Chong turned just in time to see Yue Buqun come rushing towards him with his sword raised. With his strength being used to suppress the ice in his veins Linghu Chong could do nothing but look on helplessly as the blow came down towards his skull. Sparks flew from the blade as something hit it on the side driving it away from its murderous trajectory.

Spinning around Yue Buqun hurled a bolt of red lightning at woods where the attack had come from. Trees exploded as the lightning struck them and a streak of green light flew towards Yue Buqun. The streak revealed itself to be Dongfang Bai wearing a jade green dress and she immediately attacked Yue Buqun. Deadly fingers and lethal blade battled, moving so fast as to defy belief.

Wrapping her left sleeve around the blade Dongfang Bai infused the silk with her Qi strengthening the fabric a hundredfold. Then she hurled her right palm at Yue Buqun who met the attack with his left palm. The instant they made contact Yue Buqun was hurled backwards through the air his blade ripped from his hand. Landing next to the now standing Lin Pingzhi the two of then gave each other a quick nod and decided discretion was the better part of valour. But Lin Pingzhi couldn't resist one more taunt before fleeing:

“Linghu Chong. Next time we meet you will not have your woman's dress to hide behind.” he shouted before turning tail.

Linghu Chong made to pursue, but his body had lost the fight against the coldness and he sank to his knees to be caught by his woman. He was just about able to hold onto consciousness as he looked up at her:

“How did you get here?” he managed to whisper.

“I didn't trust Yue Buqun, so have been following you since you left the inn. Now be quiet while I see to your injuries.”

Closing his eyes Linghu Chong obeyed.

    ####

Yingying let out a sigh of relief from her hiding place amongst the trees. Despite having given clear instructions that Linghu Chong should be captured unharmed, she did not complete trust Lin Pingzhi and Yue Buqun, so had discretely followed them. When Yue Buqun had launched his attack she had prepared to reveal herself in order to save Linghu Chong but was a heartbeat slower than her rival.

Now as she watched Dongfang Bai carrying Linghu Chong away she felt the familiar sense of overwhelming jealousy well up in her heart. How dare that witch touch her man and how could he suffer being cradled by such a filthy creature. As tempted as she was to step into the open and kill her hated rival, common sense stayed her hand. Instead she decided to secretly follow them, knowing that soon Dongfang Bai would use her Qi to heal Linghu Chong. That would be her moment to strike.

However as she followed them to the foot Mount Hua she saw Bai Xuesheng and Dongfang Cuì emerge. The four of them exchanged words and then started walking back towards town. Knowing that her opportunity for revenge had passed Yingying slipped back into the trees nursing her boiling rage.

    The Wedding

Linghu Chong covered the urn with soil and offered a final bow to his Shiniang. It had been ten days since Ning Zhongze's death and now her favourite apprentice was finally laying her to rest besides her beloved daughter. After recovering from his encounter with Lin Pingzhi, Linghu Chong had returned to the woods to retrieve her body and then cremate it. Yue Buqun had forfeited his right to have any say in the matter by aiding in Lin Pingzhi's ambush and so Linghu Chong had felt no need to take the remains back to Mount Hua.

He had asked his companions to let him have a quiet moment with the women he had always loved as mother and sister to which they complied. Now alone he contemplated on how much life had changed in the last couple of years. It felt as if the entire world had been turned upside down with everything he once thought as constant being turned on its head. The absurdity of it all nearly made him laugh out loud. Looking at the tombs he came to a decision. He would not lose anyone else that he loved.

    ####

Bai Xuesheng was seeing to the horses when he saw Linghu Chong approach. Greeting the man with a sombre wave he asked how he was coping:

“Fine I guess. Where are the girls?” asked Linghu Chong.

“There inside.” replied Bai Xuesheng as he nodded in the direction of the cottage they were staying in.

“There is something I want to talk to you about.”

Bai Xuesheng nodded his head for Linghu Chong to continue:

“How are preparations for the wedding going.”

“I can have them halted if you want.”

    “Please don't.”

“But don't you want to mourn the death of Lady and Madam Yue?”

“Of course I do, but I also want to marry Xiao Bai as soon as possible.”

    “Why the sudden urgency?”

“I have already lost two people I hold dear, I don't want to run the risk of losing the love of my life as well.”

    Bai Xuesheng nodded his understanding:

“I'll send word to the Palace to continue the preparations.”

“Thank you my friend. Can I ask another favour?”

    “I am at your service.”

“As you know I don't have any family. So would you mind making all the arrangements.”

“Just leave it all to me.” declared Bai Xuesheng with a twinkle in his eyes that made Linghu Chong wonder what he was letting himself in for.

    ####

Xiao Bai smiled at the look on her lover's face as he saw White Tiger Palace. Linghu Chong gasped at its grandeur in the same way Xiao Cui had and Xiao Bai decided to tease him a little:

“You know Black-wood Cliff is even more spectacular than this.”

His look of disbelief of priceless and she couldn't stop laughing. Linghu Chong relaxed a bit as he thought she was joking, then Bai Xuesheng put a hand on his shoulder:

“She's serious.” he whispered and the look of shock returned to Linghu Chong's face. Finally Xiao Cui came to his rescue:

“Jie Jie, you and Xuesheng must stop teasing Linghu Dage.” she declared with a huff.

Chuckling loudly Bai Xuesheng and Xiao Bai walked towards the first gate with their respective lovers hurrying after them.

    ####

The Dongfang sisters' faces split into dazzling smiles as they saw their adopted parents waiting for them at the first gate and ran into their open arms:

“Mother, father what are you doing here?” asked Xiao Bai as she and Xiao Cui embraced their adopted mother.

Wrapping the three women in a warm bear hug Bujie chuckled:

“Xuesheng sent an escort for us. He thought it would be unseemly for the two of you to marry without getting our blessing first.”

The sisters blushed furiously at the words and their adopted mother decided to spare them further embarrassment by bustling them in through the gate. Linghu Chong and Bai Xuesheng bowed to Bujie and then the three of them followed the women.

    ####

Having refreshed themselves the six of them had retired to one of the side halls of the Palace where a massive stack of invitations and a list of auspicious dates lay on a table at the centre of the hall. Sitting around the table they went through the dates and chose the earliest one to hold the wedding on. That gave them only two months, but Bai Xuesheng assured everyone that this was enough time.

As they turned their attention to the invitations Ba Xuesheng took two from the top of the pile handing them to Linghu Chong:

“I'll let you decide whether we should send these or not.”

Looking at the invitations Linghu Chong felt as if a lead ball had been dropped onto his heart. One of them was addressed to Mount Hua and the other Black-wood Cliff.

    ####

Everyone in the room was silent as they watched Yingying tap the invitation against the chair rest, her eyes riveted to the floor. Even her father didn't say a word knowing that this was a decision she must make alone. Finally Yingying lifted her gaze and addressed the men:

“There could be more to this than meets the eye. We need to send someone to investigate.” she declared.

“I agree. But who?” asked Ren Woxing.

“Both Lord Yue and Lin Pingzhi are needed to foresee the purging of the Five Schools. So I suggest sending uncle Xiang.”

Xiang Wentian and Yue Buqun nodded their head's in agreement, Lin Pingzhi however seemed preoccupied with rubbing his temples and appeared not to have heard the discussion. With no objections to the proposal Ren Woxing declared the mattered settled and ended the meeting. As everyone was leaving Yingying asked Lin Pingzhi to stay. When alone she looked at him with concerned eyes:

    “Are you well young sir.”

“I've been getting these headaches recently.”

“Don't worry its quite a normal reaction.”

“Reaction? To what?” asked Lin Pingzhi with a note on panic entering his voice.

“Sanshi Naosheng Pill” replied Yingying in a matter of fact way.

    “WHAT!?” boomed Lin Pingzhi.

Yingying didn't reply but just looked at him with a cruel smile.

“But how?” asked Lin Pingzhi unable to keep the shock from his voice.

Again Yingying didn't speak but gently rubbed her cheeks.

“The rouge! That's how you poisoned me you witch” cried Lin Pingzhi as his fears gave way to anger.

“There's no need for insults young sir. So long as you continuing doing what you are told I will ensure you stay healthy.”

Lin Pingzhi wanted to smash his fists into her beautiful face and gouge out her eyes with his fingers, but resisted the impulse, knowing that such action could only lead to his own demise. Finally after taken a few breaths he spoke:

“So why are you telling me now?”

“You will be leaving Black-wood Cliff for Mount Song soon. I just wanted to make sure you didn't have any silly ideas about going back on our agreement.” replied Yingying with a sweet smile.

Looking at her Lin Pingzhi had to fight down the reawakening murderous impulses and settled for silently raining down countless curses on the treacherous witch.

    ####

It was ten days before the wedding and White Tiger Palace was a hive of activity. Servants and merchants rushed about, desperate to have everything ready by the tight deadline, while a never ending stream of messengers arrived carrying gifts from everyone of importance within the Martial Arts world. Bai Xuesheng was overseeing the preparation of the Main Hall when he caught sight of Xiao Cui and Bujie walking pass.

Hurrying towards them he greeted Bujie with a nod and Xiao Cui with a smile:

    “You two going somewhere?”

“We are going into town to pick out the jewellery me and Jie Jie will wear.” replied Xiao Cui with an equally dazzling smile.

“Then shouldn't you be going with her then?”

“Mother isn't feeling well so Jie Jie and Linghu Dage have decided to stay to with her.”

“I'll go with you, just give me a moment.”

Bujie shook his head “You have more than enough to do. We can take care of this.”

“I would feel better if I went with the two of you.”

“Are you doubting my ability to protect my daughter?” Bujie's voice remained warm but a slight edge had crept into it.

“Not at all. It's just that...”

“Then its settled. Me and Xiao Cui will go into town while you stay here.” Bujie's words left no room for argument and Bai Xuesheng didn't want to offend his future father-in-law. Xiao Cuì gave her fiancé a reassuring smile but also kept quiet as not to upset her adopted father either.

With the matter settled Bai Xuesheng watched the two of them leave. When they were out of sight he summoned a servant and gave some hurried orders.

    ####

Xiang Wentian peeked through the window as Xiao Cuì tried on a pair of golden earrings. Having arrived at the outskirts of White Tiger Palace a month ago he had been trying to infiltrate the Palace, but the watertight security of the place meant that all his efforts had been in vain. With access to the Palace denied, he had redirected his efforts to gathering information within the nearby town instead.

During his investigations he had discovered that one of the local jewellers boasted of an exclusive contract with the Palace. Having tracked him down he had taken the man's family hostage so forcing him to divulge all the information he had. Learning that Xiao Cui was coming to select jewellery for the wedding Xiang Wentian had hidden himself within the shop in order to spy on her.

Now it seemed that good fortune was smiling upon him for Xiao Cui had arrived with just a single companion, providing the opportunity Xiang Wentian had been waiting for. Quietly he slipped out of the shop to make his preparations.

    ####

Xiao Cui talked happily with her adopted father as they made their way through the woods. In her hand she carried a box containing her and Xiao Bai's bridal jewellery. Xiao Cui had chosen a pair of ruby studded golden bracelets with matching earrings for her sister. The pieces were elegantly made and would accentuate her sister's graceful features.

For herself Xiao Cui had chosen a pair on silver bracelets and earrings studded with emeralds. She had chosen them as they reminded her of Xuesheng's exotic eyes and how his steady gaze always made her feel safe. Despite having only been apart from him for a few hours she was already starting to miss him and said as much to Bujie. The monk smiled dotingly and remembered what it was like to be young and in love.

His smile fell as he saw someone standing in the path ahead of them. The man was about his age and had a strong build. He had a thick beard along with a heavy mane of black-grey hair. The way that he held himself showed that he was a veteran fighter which made Bujie get his guard up. Leaning in close to Xiao Cui he whispered into her ear:

“When I give the word you run back to the Palace and get help.”

    “But father...”

“Don't argue. If you are captured then you could be used against both Xuesheng and Xiao Bai.”

Xiao Cui knew he spoke the truth, but could not bring herself to abandon her adopted father and although she remained silent she secretly decided to stay with him no matter the danger. Taking her silence for agreement Bujie turned to the stranger and saluted him:

“Humble monk Bujie and his daughter Dongfang Cui at your service sir.”

Returning the gesture the man replied:

“So Holy One is the legendary 'Phantom Monk'. I Xiang Wentian am honoured to make your acquaintance.”

Bujie realized he had been right to be cautious, for this man worked for Xiao Bai's enemy, but kept a smile on his face as he spoke:

“The honour is all ours. Who would could have guessed that we would run into the famous 'Left Emissary' of the Sun-Moon Cult today.”

“I have come with greetings from Lord Ren. My Lord wishes to extend his congratulations to Lady Dongfang Cui's upcoming marriage to Lord Bai. Unfortunately pressing events at Black-wood Cliff prevents him from coming himself. Instead he wishes to extend an invitation for the Lady to come to the Cliff so that he can personally give you his well wishes.”

“Lord Ren is too kind...” Bujie didn't finish his sentenced as he slammed his right forearm into a nearby tree and sent it flying towards Xiang Wentian like a spear.

Stepping forwards Xiang Wentian brought his hand down in an overhead chop. Bujie seemed to emerge from the neatly severed tree as he flew through the air and aimed a punch at Xiang Wentian's face. The latter widened his stance and turned his hand catching the blow with his palm. Shock showed on his face as his back-foot sank deep into the ground and his body jolted from the power of the blow.

He had little time to recover however for Bujie followed with a barrage of well aimed punches striking quickly and with tremendous force. Xiang Wentian parried desperately as he retreated from the overwhelming attack, but his panic soon turned to anger and he countered with a series of deadly palm and finger strikes. Despite his fury Xiang Wentian's attacks were not unfocussed, targeting his opponents eyes, throat and groin.

Bujie was as skilled in defence as he was in attack and as dangerous as the blows were he weathered them without given any openings to his enemy. Xiao Cui watched the exchange with rapt awe. It was like witnessing a fight between two colossal bears such was the awesome strength being displayed. She had trouble accepting that her doting adopted father was such a vicious fighter.

Then she returned to her senses and made to aid him. Suddenly dozens of men armed with short curved swords came raring out of the woods. Xiao Cui hurled her box at the nearest men hitting him in the face and then ran forwards to slam her fingers into his throat before he could recover. As the man dropped to the ground Xiao Cui ripped the blade from his hand and set upon his companions. Being more accustomed to using the straight sword her blows were a little awkward as she struggled with the unfamiliar blade, however her steps were as elegant as ever and she danced gracefully away from the clumsy attacks of her assailants.

Bujie leaned to the right and received a glancing blow to the side of his head. Xiang Wentian tried to press his attack but was lifted of his feet by an uppercut. Bujie followed with a left hook which sent Xiang Wentian spinning around. The Left Emissary kept his wits however and sent a spinning kick into the gut of the monk forcing him back. Taken defensive stances they started circling each other.

Bujie could here his adopted daughter fighting behind him but resisted the urge to look. Xiang Wentian was one of the deadliest opponent he had ever faced with a strength that rivalled his own and he knew that even a single moments lapse of concentration would be fatal. Blood started trickling from his head where he had been struck and he quickly wiped it away without taking his eye of his enemy.

Xiang Wentian spat out a dislodged tooth along with a mouthful of blood. He could see why Bujie had been so famous in his day. Despite disappearing from the Martial Arts world for decades he fought with the skill of a warrior born. If circumstances were different he would have liked to befriend such a man. Pushing such thoughts aside he sent a quick right palm at Bujie's bleeding side. The blow was a feint and when Bujie raised his hand to parry he launched his real attack.

His palm struck solidly into Bujie's ribs but it was Xiang Wentian who was hurled back as he slammed head on into the monk's fist. Bujie had read the feint even as it came in and positioned his free hand to take advantage of the blow he knew was coming. Quickly he lunged forwards and sent a double palm strike into the man's chest throwing him clear of his feet. However even in mid-air Xiang Wentian retained his fighter instincts and replied by slamming both his feet into Bujie's collar bone. The monk staggered backwards giving Xiang Wentian the space he needed to get back on his feet. Bleeding and panting they faced each other.

Xiao Cui had killed another three men as her adopted father fought, but knew that she was now in trouble. The men were starting to encircle her and restricting her space to manoeuvre. She knew that she must try to break out soon or face certain defeat and scanned around for possible escape routes. A shadow flew over her and landed amongst the men, killing two of them on impact. Before the rest even had time to register the new arrival he was amongst them.

Xiao Cui recognized the man as Tai Zhong and her heart leapt as the commander of the Iron Tigers waded through the men with his heavy Qin style broadsword. The ancient design of the blade meant that only a very strong man could wield it, but Tai Zhong swung it as if it was a willow reed as he laid into the men. Tai Zhong's heavy broadsword shattered the lighter blades of his enemies and cut deep into their bodies, felling them as if they were wheat.

Xiang Wentian's men tried to use their greater numbers and surround Tai Zhong but he was never static and came charging on like an enraged bull forcing them to either stand before him or flee. Faced with such a terrible opponent they did what most sane people would do and choice flight over fight. Scant minutes had passed since the arrival of the old fighter but already the ground was littered with corpses and the wood filled with frightened men, leaving only four people within sight.

Xiang Wentian leapt away from a vicious left hook and quickly assessed the situation. Realising that the odds had swung irreversibly against him he did the only sensible thing and turned to flee. When he was sure that his opponent had left the battered Bujie turned and smiled his thanks to Tai Zhong. It wasn't difficult to guess who had sent him and the monk offered a silent prayer of thanks for having such a cautious future son-in-law. However his gratitude was not going to stop him from giving him a tongue-lashing when he saw him.

It was three days until the wedding and Xiao Cui was starting to wonder if her nerves would survive. The excitement was building to a fever pitch with everyone in the Palace anticipating the great event. Bai Xuesheng had ensured that all his people would share in his joy and arranged for the villages around the Palace to be given free donations of rice for the ten days of celebrating he had planned.

Xiao Cui was in her sister's room having her hair brushed by her older sibling, a ritual that both sisters found calming when there was a knock on the door. A maid entered on receiving permission and informed them that Bai Xuesheng was requesting their presence in the Main Hall to receive a very important guest.

The sisters arrived to see Linghu Chong and their adopted parents already there along with Bai Xuesheng. Xiao Cui stepped up to her lover and frowned as she saw the mischievous glint in his eyes:

“Just what are you up to?” she asked.

Bai Xuesheng did not have to answer for at that moment two men stepped into the Hall. Linghu Chong gasped in surprise. Both men were well into old age, but moved as easily as men in their prime. One of them he didn't recognize but the other was his Granduncle Feng Qingyang. The identity of his companion was revealed when Bai Xuesheng cried out Grand-papa and ran into his open arms. After a fierce embrace they held each other at arms length and Bai Nianfei patted his grandson's cheek:

“You've gained weight.” he said with a chuckle.

“You can blame Xiao Cui for that. She feeds me to well.” replied Bai Xuesheng as he nodded towards his fiancée.

As Xiao Cui walked tentatively forwards she looked up into a pair of warm emerald eyes. The gaze was a comforting as Xuesheng's but had a tiredness to them that his did not. Courtesying to her future grandfather-in-law she greeted him:

“Little girl pays her respect to Grand Lord Bai.” she said in a slightly trembling voice.

“Grand Lord Bai? Your going to have to get used to addressing me with another title soon.” said Bai Nianfei in the same warm tone he had used with Bai Xuesheng.

“Please Grand-papa don't tease her. She's very shy.”

Chuckling Bai Nianfei let go of his grandson and took Xiao Cui's hand patting it gently while whispering the words “wonderful child”, which made Xiao Cui blush.

Linghu Chong fell to his knees before Feng Qingyang:

“Granduncle what are you doing here?”

“That old man over there came to my cave and told me of your upcoming wedding.” said Feng Qingyang as he nodded towards his friend.

Xiao Bai looked at Bai Xuesheng with a wide smile:

“But I thought you had lost contact you your grandfather?”

It was Bai Nianfei who replied:

“My dear girl did you really think I was going to leave him with absolutely no way to contact me? There is a secret place where he can leave a message for me in case of important matters and I can think of few matters more important than the continuation of my family line.”

Riotous laughter greeted the words and Xiao Cui turned and even deeper shade of red. Bai Xuesheng made the introductions with the girls parents and then they all settled down to their first complete family meal.

The big day had finally arrived. Guests from the Martial Arts World and the Imperial Court filled White Tiger Palace and awaited the brides. The Dongfang sisters sat within a large palanquin made of gold and wood. Red curtains enclosed the vehicle, shielding them from other people's gaze but still allowing air to penetrate for the occupants' comfort. A long column of musicians and dancers decked in red preceded the palanquin on its procession around the Palace. All the residences come out to cheer them on and welcome their new Mistress.

Every building within the Palace was decorated with red lanterns and ribbons making the island look like a glistening ruby in the great river. When the procession reached the central citadel it was greeted by the grooms who wore matching red/gold robes studded with diamonds. The robes were tailor made and showed of each men's body. Bai Xuesheng's was cut to emphasise his broad shoulders and Linghu Chong's to complement his lean muscular frame.

All the guests stood as the couples entered to Hall. As magnificent as the grooms were it as the brides who stole everyone's attention. Dressed in their flowing red silk gowns which had long trains embroidered with golden thread to resemble the tail feathers of peacocks. Their faces were veiled as tradition demanded but the thin silk did little to hide the ravishing beauties beneath. Their headdresses were master craft creations with Xiao Bai's having golden feathers studded with rubies and Xiao Cui having silver feathers decked with emeralds. Taking the hand of their respective grooms they started walking towards the raise dais at the front of the Hall.

Normally the dais contained a gilded throne with the pelt of a white tiger draped over it, today however the throne had been replaced by four ornate wooden chairs covered with red silk. On the chairs sat the parents and elders of the marrying couples. From left to right sat Bai Nianfei, Feng Qingyang, Bujie and his wife all of them dressed in vibrant robes and smiling proudly at the newly weds.

As the couples reached the chairs they fell to their knees then presented tea to their parents and elders whom joyfully accepted. With the ceremony complete the guests greeted the now married couples with thunderous applause and the celebrations really began.

Bai Nianfei was drunk, but did not care. Draping his arm over the equally intoxicated Feng Qingyang he clinked wine cups with his friend and they drained the vessels in a single gulp. Feeling a gentle hand on his arm he turned to see Xiao Cui looking at him with concerned eyes:

“Please Grand-papa, don't drink so much.” she pleaded.

“What did you just call me?” he asked in a gentle voice.

Xiao Cui's cheeks turned the same colour as her gown and Bai Nianfei chuckled as he turned to his friend:

“You hear that old man. She just called me Grand-papa.”

“Yes I heard. Now stop boasting.” Feng Qingyang tried to sound annoyed but there was no hiding the smile on his face.

Bai Nianfei turned to his granddaughter:

“I will stop drinking when you retire to the nuptial bed.”

“Then we better to going” replied Bai Xuesheng as he rose and took his bride's hand.

Linghu Chong and Xiao Bai smiled at each other and followed the lead of the other couple. Some of Bai Xuesheng's friends began to get to the feet intending to play the customary pranks on the newly weds, but a stern look from Bai Nianfei quickly made them reconsider and so allowing the wedding night to pass in peace. At least to anyone outside the rooms that is.

It was nearly midday when the newly married couples greeted Fangzheng and Chongxu in the study, both of them had been guests at the wedding and the elders had allowed the couples to rest for most of the morning before requesting this audience. When everyone was seated Fangzheng addressed the newly weds:

“This humble monk begs for forgiveness for disturbing your rest. But we have urgent matters to discuss.”

“Holy one is too kind. Please feel free to share your thoughts with us.” replied Bai Xuesheng.

“I assume you are all aware of events within the Five Mountain Schools?” confirming nods answered Fangzheng and he continued “The death of so many prominent members of the schools can only have been the work of the Sun-Moon Cult. If this is so then it means that Ren Woxing has started his plan to conquer the Martial Arts world.”

Although the Abbot's words were disturbing they were not unexpected. Both Bai Xuesheng and Xiao Bai had guessed as much. In fact the two of them along with their spouses had been discussing these events for some time. Nodding to the Abbot, Xiao Bai spoke:

“Honourable Abbot, your fears are well founded. We can also tell you that my sources within the Cult has reported that both Yue Buqun and Lin Pingzhi have been at Black-wood Cliff. It would seem that Ren Woxing is well on its way to controlling the Five Mountain Schools.”

“At present only an alliance between our schools and the Bai family can present a strong enough front to oppose Ren Woxing.” spoke Chongxu.

“Reverence, while I do not doubt your words, I must point out that such an alliance would be unfair on us. Your and the Abbot's positions within the Martial Arts world means that you cannot be seen to act directly against the Five Mountain School without proof and so any action taken against them would have to be carried out by us.” said Bai Xuesheng

“That is correct” replied Chongxu, in a voice that had a hint of suspicion in it.

“As both of you are aware Ren Woxing is a formidable Martial Artist, while both Yue Buqun and Lin Pingzhi are now are quite adept in the Evil Resisting Sword. It will require the combined efforts of me, Xiao Bai and Brother Linghu in order to overcome them.”

The two elder Martial Artists nodded their agreement and Bai Xuesheng continued:

“However Brother Linghu is unable to fight to the best of his abilities at this time. So we must regretfully decline your offer.”

Fangzheng looked hard at Bai Xuesheng, He already knew how powerful a fighter he was, but it seemed that his political skills were just as sharp:

“Very well. I am ready to pass the Yijin Jing to the young sir, on the condition that he alone practices the art.”

    “Agreed” replied Xiao Bai.

“I have couple conditions of my own.” said Xiao Cui. Everyone turned to her in surprise but she met the gazes steadily.

“And what condition are those, Madam Bai?” asked Chongxu

“That the alliance be kept a secret and that we have up to a year to take direct action against Ren Woxing.”

Both the Abbot and the High Priest accepted the conditions. With the alliance concluded the elder Martial Artists left the study and Bai Xuesheng turned to his wife:

“Why did you set the date of a year? Brother Linghu could properly have used the art to cure himself within a couple of months.”

“I wanted to enjoy married life for at least a year before a ran the risk of becoming a widow.” Xiao Cui said the words with a cheeky smile, eliciting a chorus of laughter from her companions.
