What is the Dog Beating Staff made up of?

I have an argument with a colleague about this which lasted our entire lunch break. I think it's jade and he thinks it's not because jade would be too brittle. We know from various depictions in movies and comic books that the staff is green. But I cannot remember if I read it in the novels that it was made of jade.

I do remember a Stephen Chow movie where he broke the staff though.. that was pretty funny....

Can anyone help us? What is it made out of?

The staffs of the begger clan are made from bamboo since their poor and bamboo is cheap and easily found. The top experts and elders may put a rod of steel or iron inside the hallow of the bamboo. The dog beating stick is made of bamboo but may be treated with special solution or have metal inside and on top of the bamboo. It appear different from other bamboo. Shiny like metal.
