Ordinary men who accomplish extraordinary things in times of need.
Sacrificing him/herself for a cause that is righteous.

This is the definition from the dictionary:
1) In mythology and legend, a man, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and favored by the gods.
2) A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life: soldiers and nurses who were heroes in an unpopular war.
3) A person noted for special achievement in a particular field: the heroes of medicine. See Synonyms at celebrity.
4) The principal male character in a novel, poem, or dramatic presentation.
5) A person of distinguished valor or enterprise in danger, or fortitude in suffering; a prominent or central personage in any remarkable action or event; hence, a great or illustrious person.
it's too wide and subjective.

I'd go by the definitions posted by Xiao Feng, although 1) is not quite what I'd consider a hero and 4)
is the lamest and most overused one. Going by that, WXB would be a hero...4) The principal male character in a novel, poem, or dramatic presentation.
"Anything you can't say NO to is your MASTER, and you are its SLAVE."
"I disapprove of what I say, but I will defend to the death my right to say it."
WXB is a hero, he helped KX dozens of times.

All great JY novels contains anti-hero and not true traditional hero.
not being traditional hero doesn't mean they are not hero .
